If you throw a match in gasoline it just goes out so honestly just do whatever while the tank fills. Light some sparklers, charcoal grill, maybe a quick touchup spot weld, sky's the limit

This is a real thing in some heavy mechanic industries. Welding tanks with fuel in them.

Pip-Pip old chap! Last one in is a rotten egg what what.

Gas fumes on the other side of the tank wall, bad news. Liquid fuel on the other side means no oxygen and a big heat sink, makes sense. Just don't weld the top near the air space.

As long as there's no air inside, you're fine. Missing one third of the fire triangle.

According to the guy who taught me to weld, that's the fng's job on an oil field welding crew. They'll drive you out to the field in a truck, stop a mile away from an active natural gas pipeline with a crack in it, and say "there's a diesel welder up at the job site. I'll tell you what do to on the radio. Get out and start walking."

Then it's just you, a ten-thousand-degree electric arc, and a gas line five feet around.

I'm not sure if someone is done a study if stilts are safer than ladders. They're certainly faster than ladders. Only thing OSHA really cares about with stilts is if you get close to an edge, then you might need a taller guardrail, or need to wear some other fall protection. Only people I ever see use stilts are drywallers/tapers for ceilings, and at that point, most floor openings are covered up.

Your nearly empty gas tank contains gas fumes. You displace them when you fill the tank, creating an even better fuel-air mix. The burning fumes can ignite the liquid gasoline.

This is how people with lighters, cigarettes, and even sometimes poorly timed static charges end up running away from a burning vehicle at a gas station on YouTube.

We watched this in a project management class I just took. The instructor was talking about how housing inspectors were on site to make sure everything was up to code throughout the build. As the time-stamped part of the video played, he said, "OSHA obviously was not on site."

He also had a video (which I can't find) of an interview with the owners of the house 10 years after the build. There were no structural problems with the house, just some minor fit and finish work over the years.

We're having some pretty cold weather over here in western Europe. Over in Dublin (Ireland), during a snowstorm, some locals decided to loot a local budget supermarket.

After a while they stole a digger, and just started tearing at the building...

Meanwhile, nearby, some other lads stole a tipper truck and went for a bit of a joyride

Back at the supermarket, the looters found the safe, and used the JCB to pry it open

I was working on a construction project in France where a band of thieves stole a bunch of the heavy equipment one night. They boxed in the police station and deflated the tires, then used the remaining equipment to break into a store and go for the safe. They didn't bust down the door, they literally just tore down the wall adjacent to the safe with a backhoe.

Collateral Damage
Jun 13, 2009

There was a rash of it a decade ago or so here, because construction equipment generally isn't very secure. There was a brief period where you'd hear every couple of weeks about a gang of thieves stealing a bulldozer or front loader or something like that and just smashing the wall of an electronics store and making off with as much as they could load up in whatever vehicles they had.

I think construction companies started putting immobilisers in their machines after that because it died out after a year or so.

Most newer cranes, loaders and excavators have a battery disconnect. The older stuff where I work has a switch wired right to the battery. Just open the battery compartment and there it is the cheapest off the shelf switch NAPA had at the time.

Though it's less about thief and more about battery drain. Nothing beats telling people they have to wait to get to work while the batteries charge because someone left the key on overnight.
