Not quite the same but at OCS we had a few dudes and dudettes who'd been in the medical holding company for almost the better part of a year. One of the girls was telling us about one girl who'd been there for nine months due to getting her hip hosed up bad during Fast Cruise. Apparently they'd merged the medical holding company with the general "H" class (the place they put the people who rolled back due to PT or evolution fails) a little before her time after some person went out on medical liberty and came back smashed and passed out on the quarterdeck. I miss those guys, they were like our version of Red from Shawshank Redemption, they knew their way around the base and make sure we didn't screw up too bad.

I assume it is onboard NAS FW at either the NOSC or JRIC. Will you have a rental car/are you driving down from PNW? Are you staying onbase or off? There are good restaurants in Fort Worth but a lot more as you go east toward Dallas.

The Perot Museum of Nature and Science is really great. The Sixth Floor Museum is also pretty cool, you can go stand on the "X's" they painted on the street below that marks where the bullets struck. I'll stress again that the Pecan Lodge is really really good. I'm from Dallas, so I can probably help if you have any specific questions.

I passed my final board for Master Training Specialist today so now I can tell people how important it is to get MTS and also chief stops bugging me. The only reason to get any qual ever. Passed my murder board on my dinq date lol #Tomahawkers

So I got a tour of the Stennis today. I may have volunteered for 30 days orders after talking to a master chief. Apparently they have some ADSW money for just this. Can’t wait to crank for 30 days.

A much more competent IS1 from my unit got a similar deal on the Vinson a few years back and cranked the whole time. It super turned off the command sending us on ships.

Get the orders written to staff not ships company. NGA had one of their recent enlisted ship riders pulled out of MSI and put in supplot because the ship needed an extra watchstander.

I am no sailor but wouldn't it make more sense to use the reservists in their rates in order to free up others to do lovely things like be mess cranks or whatever ? That way you cover down on what needs to be done and don't piss off the guys loaning you free labor?

Huh. Lots of good things to keep in mind. I knew you guys would be useful. I joined as an IT and got system admin C school so at least I got the most basic of training. I’m trying for radio school but this may actually be a good practical experience. Who knows what I’ll get mobbed to.

This is a fairly common problem and it almost always generates animosity. Sailors are liabilities that require investment to make useful and there's a lack of rigorous assessment to determine whether or how a reservist you're getting can actually help. My next experiment will be to take a first-class and make him a personal assistant. Follow DIVO or LPO or Chief around, get coffee, carry stuff, and help scum for office supplies until I see a 3M qualification. I'll probably get yelled at for it, but I don't know what else to do. Edit: LingcodKilla, don't balk at doing something like cranking or sweeping--you're helping even if it's out of rate, but if you do get to avoid those tasks, find /something/ you can do to help out the division or the guys you're sent to help will decide you're deadweight and not worth the effort. Maintain rigorous documentation of qualifications, have them readily available,, get qualified, and request maintenance program instructions and guidance as soon as you can to get up-to-speed and be useful. Study tagout procedures and prepare to redemonstrate from the beginning at every command you go to. My attitude is just go with the flow and don’t balk at anything in public. All AT ends sooner or later and I get to go home. I’m very interested in learning what my rate does with radios so legit looking forward to this. Creating accounts and fighting with printers is cool and all but that’s only half the rate. My command is encouraging me to go and give some feedback/lay a path for future sailors to do it since we never ever go afloat.

Well then that's the path. When I was a baby ensign, my task was to UI every time until I could do something useful--hampered by the fact that everybody that knows how it works can't remember what it's like to not know how it works. Nobody likes a person who isn't useful for anything yet and nobody likes to be that person--the soonest you can find something that makes you an asset vice a liability, the happier you and everyone around you will be. If your command, the gaining command, and yourself can work together to find a way to fast track that, the better.

That said, I never send that kind of sailor to a ship alone. I always make sure there are a few boots plus an experienced first class or chief so they actually learn something and become productive and everyone benefits. It doesn't benefit the reserves to get stuck as mess crankers and coffee bitches.

That was the difference with our actual last useful batch. They showed up with an LT SWO, a chief and two of the first classes just left active duty a week before and were able to show everyone else what's what. Compare to two IT2s with no shipboard experience showing up at 0900 on the first Monday of an avail, planning to be there for total of four days. We're here to help! Maintenance person qualified? Of course not. Sentry? No weapons quals. You're not touching my network. Here's a PQS, see you at check out Thursday.

In the Seabees the concentration of job knowledge is in the reserves due to them often doing construction on the outside, as oppossed to us not doing it while preparing half the year to play fake war, then the other planning projects before going out the door. Doesn't leave a lot of time for on rate training

I think I might be going crazy. I seem to remember that right after they changed they HYT gates for E4-6 right after that they changed the eligibility for retirement to 22 years. I can't find the NAVADMIN that states that and it looks like I can stay in until I hit 22 but am eligible to retire at 20. I would much rather retire on shore duty than have to juggle sea duty with getting ready to get out.
