When I was last on Newstart I went to two different JSAs, one in Northbridge and another in Victoria Park. Both were owned by the same outfit which I believe is now defunct was probably swallowed up by the Salvos. I only attended the bare minimum hours required and it was shite. I'd rock up in the morning with about 7-10 others and we'd all sign-in and then go to this room which had a handful of garbage PCs, some telephones, a fax machine and a stack of newspapers (Most were missing the job posting sections and there were never enough to go around). Most of the time I'd just check my e-mail and fire off a couple of resumes, things which I could have done at home without an hour of round-trip travel. I've never bothered to look into what money these outfits receive from the government but whatever it is it's a loving waste.

"Oh just search on the computer while you wait" (of course said computers were totally grody and I was neutropenic). 11:30 comes around and the staff in question walks past the front desk, says "I'm going to lunch, be back in two hours" and just sauntered off. I did the same about 30s later. Fuckers.

I was with them in Heidelberg 7 years back and they were loving useless, exactly the same situation as cheese-cube described. I found a job through family, told the JSA I was done and they had the gall to tell me I had to fill out an appreciation survey so they could grade my agent. I didn't and they kept ringing me at least once a week for the next 3 months, along with letters asking me to please fill it out or my agent will get in trouble.  Don't go to a JSA, if you have to, find one that's a non-profit as they're generally miles above the for-profit scum.

My JSP seems alright, technically they've helped get me some jobs (temporary contract work but still) and they seem to specialise more in assistance for disabled workers than actually finding jobs, but hell, beats having to fill out 20 job apps every month. Naturally, they seem underfunded. (office lost its admin person a while ago, and is literally around the back of a porn shop)
