There's been a few as side characters in the Ciaphas Cain and Horus Heresy books. In A Thousand Sons the heroes are, in complete seriousness, saved by the power of love between a lesbian remembrancer and her noblewoman girlfriend she made on Prospero.

I just read Deathfire. It's not the most pointless book in the series, because Vulcan does come back to life at the end. But on the other hand, yeah no poo poo. That's his entire thing, and we know he was alive in The Beast Arises. And also that's literally all that happens. The book is six hundred pages long, and it seems to exist purely to get Vulcan out of Ultramar. The Salamanders don't even leave Macragge until like 200 loving pages in. And it's Nick Kyme, so the prose is painfully bad. Actually reading it is like wading through a mixture of mud and poison ivy. 30 pages in I just started skimming, checking a few sentences every page, like "is anything happening? No? Ok"

No but there is a fun fluff piece explaining why the Imperium refuses to tow asteroids into orbit as siege weapons.

I just finished Watchers of the Throne, that was a pretty cool book that showed the turning point of 40k from the POV of Earth. The shout out to the Black Legion books was pretty neat, and made the return of the primachs and the fall of Cadia feel more natural.

The Magos arrived just in time for my 40k fix, it's a pretty big drat book with the Magos portion taking up the last 300 or so pages of it. There's a recommended reading order in the beginning, so the stories in it intertwine with the Eisenhorn and Ravenor books with Pariah happening after Magos.

Almost all of the words I've had to look up had an (archaic) next to the definition, so I'm assuming that's a stylistic choice on the editors' part.

Rather good actually. Eisenhorn git a recent reprint, and Gaunt's Ghosts has had reissues of individual books as well as the omnibuses with new cover art. Seems they want to celebrate Abnett coming back to write some more.

They are alright, less bolter porn and more dagger/sword porn. Not amazing writing but a fun read about dark elves murdering and betraying each other.

Most of the "that was my plan all along" stuff tends to come from the more scholarly-types. The five novels (No idea about Bloodwalker or Deathblade) give a good look at the Dark Elf society and they're an entertaining read.

Lexicanum is generally better because it just lift quotes verbatim from the codexes. Wikia has a massive problem with editing that makes the most chaotic 1d4chan page look clean in comparison. There's sometimes stuff that you find there that isn't found elsewhere, but it is buried under a mountain of horribly imprecise text.

My suggestion is go to 1d4chan and experience some hyperbole with your research. Also occasional porn.

1D4chan is easily navigated if you're familiar with chanwiki style. If not, expect it to swing wildly from fanboy gushing to rabid nerdrage over the course of a single paragraph with the aforementioned random porn and you've basically got the gist of it.

No, seriously, he's not sure right now, and could use a quick refresher.

Leaving that aside, I finally got around to starting The Warmaster, and sometimes I just remember that Abnett writes like he's doing actual books, with introspective character studies and compelling use of language and okay, yes, people being torn apart with swords that are also chainsaws.

Had some disappointing random samples from the library, and getting some writing with a good flavor to it is a nice antidote.

That was the Drizzt level. Still not the cheapest one. That would be the fight against the dragon two levels later.

The best level is the Yuan-Ti temple where you can stealth kill your way through the whole place.

Warhammer wiki has more detail most of the time, I've found. The lovely part is that many articles rely on the same thing copy pasted repeatedly, which means you really have to sift hard to find the original stuff on any given page. Lexicanum is better in that respect because each article is generally written by itself.

(It’s because he’s hilarious)

Also their article about Duncan Rhodes is pretty entertaining.
