It's a good thing the timer for nationalistic grudges is only about 500 years otherwise Mongolia would be getting hate from everybody.

The situation between China and Japan right now is a country that committed atrocities against the other 70 years ago being mealy-mouthed at best regarding it and has significant sectors of its society and government that straight up deny their occurrence. This is bad. The other country is run by a totalitarian regime that committed similar atrocities against its own people and is generally lovely all around. They lean on these past atrocities for the sake of legitimacy, and have zero interest in actually reconciling with Japan and moving forward no matter what Japan does. This is also bad. In conclusion, East Asia is a land of contrasts

It's not like China is really hoping to bring up the entirety of East Asia and is just waiting for Japan to truly apologize so they can start teaming up and bringing prosperity to that region. China is happy to use it as a scapegoat and a distraction from internal problems for as long as they can.

Farang Death Blog is a website that tracks foreigners dying in Thailand. Most of the incidents are old guys dying while loving prostitutes or drunk young adults on scooters. There are a handful of migrant workers that die every month in industrial accidents as well. Other than that, it's all Chinese tourists who happened upon foot deep water. A recent one for instance was an elderly person who went for a walk around the resort pool. Found drowned later that morning. Other nationalities drown as well, but it's seemingly random. With the Chinese, my number one advice to tourists would be to stay the hell away from anything wet. Atlas Hugged fucked around with this message at 04:53 on Mar 6, 2018 |

The only thing I don't like about that site is the graphic photos of the dead bodies that are only sometimes or partially censored. However, that's just a regular part of Thai culture and the photos are sourced to the news articles accompany the blog posts. Thais love taking photos of bloated and mutilated corpses for some reason. I think it's just because of the ubiquity of smartphones and because of how frequently people come upon dead bodies. You just sort of get desensitized to it and hey may as well take a photo. Like just last week two rival jet ski operators shot each other to death in an aquatic duel in front of a hundred tourists sitting on the beach and the photos of the guys bleeding out in the sand are all over the net. It's also worth mentioning that Koreans seem to have the second highest rate of drowning, but that's because they always seem to drown in pairs. Usually because one person threw themselves into the water and the other went in after and they both died. ladron posted:like german? Oops

Oh man, that blog rules. So in Hong Kong, if someone dies in your flat people believe in GHOSTS and the land value drops. You can actually sue someone for not declaring their home being a haunted flat when you go through legal discovery. Rent drops a 1/3. Nevermind that our houses are super tiny and not comfortable. So what happens to you when you ride the elevator? Does your ghost follow you or gets stuck? https://www.squarefoot.com.hk/haunted/ A brilliant list

One of my 1-1 students when I was in Bangkok was a guy going through a career change because he had originally gone to school for TV production and gotten a job doing video editing for a news channel, but got stuck cutting together all the blood-and-guts footage of car crashes that Thai news likes to show, burned out, and wanted to learn English so he could get a better gig somehow.

Most could not swim and had never tried. Some had tried and nearly drowned, meaning they will never try it again. Strangely, I have also known around 10 people who have taken swimming lessons (usually as adults), sometimes for long periods, and still can't swim. Once the lesson period is over they just gave up. Chaoshan Girl falls into this, as she took swimming lessons for 9 months and still can't swim. I don't understand how this is possible, but it's funny and sad. When she comes back to Thailand she wants to go to a beach and have me hold onto her while she tries to paddle in water she can still stand up in. Add my friend's girlfriend to the list of Chinese people who tried learning how to swim but just couldn't figure it out and gave up.

I like the idea of books that are supposed to teach the proper way to curse in English but it usually just leads to the person who read it shoehorning cursing into normal talk. It’s all about nuance, people

I feel like swimming is one of those things much like steering a car in reverse where you really need some time and a pool/parking lot to gently caress around and think (tee hee) about motor skills and how your movements affect the overall direction, which most people here never seem to bother with. When I try to explain how swimming works to people I say "imagine you're crawling through something thick, point your head in the direction you want to go and use your hands to pull yourself through it....and kick your feet a little" and that helps a little

People will be screaming on phones and kids running around shouting and poo poo throughout the movie and good luck finding anything not 3D. If you dig around a bunch you can sometimes find 2D only theaters without much of a crowd, those are best. Also if you buy the ticket in in the Alipay app instead of at the ticket counter it's like 1/3 the price.

Grand Fromage posted:People will be screaming on phones and kids running around shouting and poo poo throughout the movie and good luck finding anything not 3D. I did go to a couple movies in India and everyone was talking to each other the whole time, answering phone calls and talking for too long, taking selfies during the movie, texting with the screen brightness at full, etc. One guy was playing Bollywood music on his phone for a bit in the middle of the movie. All movies have mandatory intermissions where you can go pee, but also when you can get special discounts on snacks that are brought into the theater. All references to God are bleeped out in the language and subtitles, or else the Muslims and Christians get upset. It cost me like $1.50, so whatever. EDIT: Several times I laughed at jokes or cultural references that the local audience didn't get, and every time a few people would turn around to look, probably wondering why there was on lone person laughing, and they would see me and then do a head wobble in acceptance of it all making sense.

Also no matter how empty the theater is, there will be a buzzcut directly behind you kicking your chair the whole way through. I think the theater hires them to keep you on your toes.
