Am I reading correctly that the strike also belayed the really heinous changes to PEIA that were coming down the pipe? I haven't heard anything about health insurance (just the 5% raise), besides a "task force" convening on the 15th.

I'm happy about the 5% but man if PEIA doesn't get fixed with the quickness they better burn the statehouse to the foundations

Yeah, they accepted a 5% raise funded by cuts to Medicaid with a "task force" to address PEIA. I don't know why they did.

Here in this state often groups like teachers or in a recent battle those in social or health services will go for the first possible concession they can get. There is a starvation based mentality that is not unlike how many unions are operating in a post right-to-work world. Without continued organizing and social/community outreach, its not sustainable. The WV strike is hopefully a crucial flashpoint and I'm hoping the OK one (looking to be in early April) will also be galvanizing, but the results are always going to disappoint because nobody is really asking for a change to the system. Yet.

considering the last few decades of labor action history to consider what happened anything other than a dramatic success would be wrong, but unmitigated certainly not, and just like how the legislature there is meting out the medicaid cuts to happen after everything dies down and relegating the health plan issues to committee, it's all about atomizing the struggle and frustrating mobilization efforts, so that's why we have to see deep organizing efforts.

Fats Dominar is on the case

strikes are about much more than simply moving numbers around. they are demonstrations of labor power and solidarity. if in a year the WV GOP try to gently caress the teachers on PEIA they’ll be striking again, this time with more credibility and confidence. also this deal is a 5% pay raise for ALL state employees which builds solidarity.

if the WV GOP wants to cut Medicaid they can do so with or without the teachers. with a billionaire governor and a disgraced coal CEO running for senate their statements about not having money are transparent lies and will not work to divide the working class. this isn’t a total, complete and crushing victory, but it is a big win, and considering the size of the hole we have to dig ourselves out of wins like this should be celebrated when they come.

something that has cost the left dearly is our tendency to declare victory and go home, to rest on our laurels and compromise our gains out of existence. the right is patient and steady and it took a century for them to get to this point. we have to be the same way. after every win of every size, we dig in and prepare for the next fight

I agree that the choices are terrible, but there is no way in hell I am voting for Lynne. The ex-CEO of Kaiser loving Permanente? A bunch of us from Denver DSA went to her townhall a while back. There was like maybe 30 people there and we were over half the crowd. Half the poo poo she said was complete bullshit (hiding behind Kasier being a "non-profit," Colorado Care would have driven jobs outside of the state, etc.)

I really don't know much about Cary Kennedy or Jared Polis, but they both seem marginally better than Lynne.

There's an interesting dynamic at work: Labor laws give (protection for organizing efforts and from discharge due to strikes) but they also take away (conditions on types of strikes, etc.). What we may see is a widening conclusion that so much has been taken away, esp in right to work states, that the "give" doesn't make compliance worth it, and if that happens, there may be more wildcat strikes, strikes involving multiple CBUs, etc: once people conclude the protections on offer aren't worth much, they suddenly have very great freedom to take action without regard to what the law permits IF they can organize.

Would love to see that, plus Taft Hartley repeal, plus broader and deeper efforts to penetrate service sectors and build class consciousness among *all* employees, plus widespread and convenient ways to join unions, supported by membership drives irrespective of whether a local bargaining unit has been organized.
