I presume Zaid is going to live, if only because it would be kind of lame for Alison to go on this incredible journey out of the obligation to rescue him, only to not do that, and then go on to finish her journey of self-discovery over his corpse. I doubt he'll be important, though.

He will live on in the comic after the rescue as a minor character living on the airship just like any good RPG. By the time we are at the 95% completion mark and are sure all side quests are done, we will have done forgot why this random dude is just hanging around the engine room with only one line of dialogue.
