It should be noted that the MW:Dark Age tried really, really hard to do away with all of the "pet" mercenary regiments (due to RL issues involving the Eridani Light Horse and a Brony that I'm sure someone else will elaborate on). The editorial "Death to Mercenaries" decree was far more successful than Takashi Kurita's, but I don't feel it was ultimately beneficial to the setting because it drastically limited the sorts of campaigns you could run in the post-Jihad era.

Yeah, the Dark Age era really was not kind to the Battletech setting as a whole, chiefly because editorial mandate hosed a lot of things over. Very few Mercenary units, trying to cram the idea of Battlemechs being super rare again down the fanbase's throats, trying to prop up the Republic (initially at least) as the scrappy underdog good guys that everyone should be cheering for, and a lot of the established factions either get bend over and buttfucked (looking at you, Lyrans and Davions) or leapt headfirst off the deep end (Jade Falcon, who has gone MAXIMUM crazy). Also, the writers couldn't keep setting details straight, which lead to the current Kerensky to having five different interpretations and fighting both for, and against every side at some point because ???.

To be fair, the Jade Falcons going bonkers is the one part of the Dark Ages I really love. They hit the point as a culture where their response to not having anyone to Zell Fight with anymore is "gently caress you all, we're going all in on TSM Melee kick 'Mechs" which I find quite amusing.

No actually its worse than that. Apparently one minor(?) author put his furry self-insert into the fiction (I assume as a boring human) and then later poo poo happened, legal issues, and this author tried to claim ownership of the entire Battletech IP during a lawsuit. At least playing it, if you arn't fighting in an urban environment, infantry kind of has a hard time getting those good sneaky hits in. Plus in any non-building terrain one good machine gun burst or flamer attack will toast an entire platoon and since the AI loves to bring tanks that usually have at least one machine gun this tends to add more of a damper.

Its always fun hearing about the various SLDF units that stayed behind when Kerensky said deuces and left known space. The Eridani Light Horse is one of those units and they have a pretty cool history of their own,
an I think a few other mercenary units also have this origin too. The ComGuard are where most of the ones who stayed behind ended up and a few of the mystery elements of the whole Battletech universe are sometimes believed to be SLDF forces that remained behind or are groups that sneaked away from Kerensky's Amazing Star Road Adventure, props going to the Minnesota Tribe, the Battletech universes resident Sea Peoples

Minnesota Tribe was fine up until they got tarred by association when someone decided a few years ago that Clan Wolverine were perfect and honorable sorts who never did anything wrong and everything was just a setup. In other words, if you know anything about Battletech, making them literally the only major group in the entire setting like that.

Or, to try and explain, as the initial story went Wolverine detonated two nuclear devices as they were abandoning Clan Space - one in their own capital, and one in the capital of the Clan they were currently heavily engaged with, Snow Raven. This actually does make some sense, as McEvedy, in addition to her positive traits, was rather quick-tempered and mercurial - annihilating your own capital denies it to the person you despise trying to claim the resources there, and the nuke against Snow Raven as a final "screw you" to the society she'd come to hate.

Then some author decided ~10 years back on the Battlecorps website that this story was too nuanced, and Wolverine needed to be complete white hats. So the nuke in their capital was really another Clan (Widowmaker) sneaking one into their capital and detonating it, and the other was Snow Raven accidentally nuking themselves. The Widowmaker one I could almost believe, as they were fairly treacherous and eventually got destroyed themselves, but the Snow Raven one was explained as a hilariously stupid freak accident, and it is just idiotic on multiple levels.

The snow raven nuke combined the the wolverines refusing to use nukes in a naval battle when heavily outnumbered against an enemy that has declared the intention killing everyone as a bit too far. Widowmakers dropping the first nuke followed by wolverine's nuking everyone they can in revenge makes sense and fits the the description of the clan and leadership up to that point.

As of this moment we are stepping up to a war footing. I want regular combat drills and the perimeter of the compound patrolled. I won't have anyone else that I am responsible for hurt because some cultist thought it would be interesting. This feels like we are being toyed with. Dr Hunt, how is Nasir?

: “Nasir is going to be out of action until the end of the contract unless a miracle happens. His arm is fractured and he has suffered extensive internal injuries when the Commando fell. It looks like he wasn’t strapped into his Command Couch properly.. Or a strap came loose.”

: “poo poo. Ok, I will speak to Vance, we can’t let something stupid like that wipe out our pilots. Is Jimmums ok?”

: “Bruising and scratches, nothing serious. Our Jimmums is made of tough stuff.”

: “Call in all the members of the company, from now on nobody leaves this compound alone. I want a permanent armed guard at the gate, nobody gets in or out without approval from me. Assume everyone on the other side of that wall is out to get us.”

: “Isn’t that a little extreme?”

: “Dealing with these ComStar clowns? I don’t think anything is too extreme anymore… Troy, tell me about our mechs, how quickly can you get us back in action?"

: “Good News first, Lionhearts Trebuchet is untouched, we don’t need to do anything to it if we need it in action quickly like. It does need some work on the internals, as he ran it really hot - but it isn’t the end of the world. The Enforcer just needs patching up, I will get Vance on it right away, it should be an easy job for his team."

: “The Shadowhawk needs a lot of work, as usual. We need to source a new leg and arm. If we grab the Hunchback parts I can make it that work, though we won’t be able to put it towards building a new Hunchback in the future.. I guess you saw the Commando come back in parts? It’s toast. The fusion engine is gone, we aren’t going to be able to fix that. Horrific luck losing the Mech with the majority of its armour intact. Good news, the Locust is almost ready for action, so at least we have something to takes its place.”

: “BLC is peanuts, as usual. ComStar have awarded us 397,617.00 CBills."

: “As usual, F1rst Try Solutions were incredibly efficient at destroying their enemy, so salvage pickings are a little light.”

I finally got around to compiling the votes for our company name, F1rst Try Solutions won with 7 votes, Word of Lowtax was second with 6 votes

: “Just a reminder, we are in the hole to ComStar for $9,852,279.16 CBills"

: “If we want to get the ShadowHawk repaired, we need to grab those Hunchback parts. Unfortunatly, it's going to put us further into debt...”

Do we just grab the parts to the repair the ShadowHawk, or do we want to get in deeper with ComStar and grab some weapons as well?

I love the potoo,

Just skimming through the video real fast tonight to update the killboard, I won't be able to watch it fully until tomorrow. Surprise, the guy in the most heavily armed mech continues to rack up the kills. Figment picks up a kill piloting her third different mech, while Jimmums finally joins Lionheart and Figment in having killed a complete lance (well, Lionheart's killed two).

We didn't kill anything too special. The 1M model of Locust, contrary to usual variant naming conventions, is a Davion design rather than a Marik variant. The Jagermech's a factory standard model, and the mech itself is another one favored by the Davions to no one's surprise (though the Liaos also like them). Firestarter is everyone's favorite war crime machine. The Hunchback 4G is again the default model, and reasonably common throughout the Inner Sphere though it's especially enjoyed by the Kuritas and Liaos.

Jesus christ, Nasir's Commando just got pasted and the Locust didn't fare much better :stare: Light mechs really do fall right the gently caress apart as soon as their evasion is gone.

In terms of salvage, that Firestarter would give us three wrecks and enough to cobble together a functional one, so we should definitely grab the Firestarter. Take the Medium Lasers as well, those are always solid weapons. I think someone mentioned the AC/2 and/or AC/5 is pretty good now (something about being a Md.Las but with more range?) so grab those too. Shame we couldn't pull that AC/20 off the Hunchback, but we should consider grabbing the wreck just because the Hunchie is a good mech. The LRM5s would make a good supplementary weapon to slot in fits wherever, but they're common enough that we can pass it up and we don't have the tonnage to play around with just yet. We should definitely keep our eyes open for an LRM-15 to bring the Trebuchet back up to twin LRM-15s because we've been running a ghetto fit this whole time. Ah, man, if only we were getting bonuses based on kills.

"Troy would be really annoyed if we wrecked the Shadow Hawk's leg with a death from above"

"But I think you have to agree with me that it was totally worth it"
