Farewell, marble-dwellers!

Monaghan posted:

The bit in Xcom 2 when they are standing right in front of the alien and the hit rate is only 50%, so of course they miss the shot and everyone loses their poo poo is still one of the best moments in any playthrough.

Pat's "What is this?" always kills me at that part.

By all standards and measures that shot should have been a flank and yet the alien retained his full cover bonus. However, the alien was marked as flanked after the shot. I assume it was a bug or they attempted to shoot too quickly (ie before the game had marked the alien as flanked).

It was absolutely a bug, the alien also loses all idle animation at some point until it dies.

yeah, XCOM 2 was super busted at launch, right? Like, really awful bugs and performance in nearly every way?

The move that doomed the playthrough was the game not correctly telling them a square where an alien would see them.

Both Firaxis XCOMs had really buggy launches and IIRC there are still some fairly severe bugs in both.

Yes they are, and you're gonna really miss out on Germ Warfare, I'm afraid.

Liam was good

I want to see pat try to play ftl after that disastrous ITB video. It kinda surprised me none of the giant bomb guys beat ftl either, like I know they're bad at games, but it never really occurred to me that the rebel flagship was that big of a hurdle. It's tough, yeah, but by no means insurmountable

As for FTL, that game is super good but the final boss is badly designed and probably the game's biggest flaw.

FTL is bad not because of its difficulty but because every detail of its aesthetic and all the decisions you make are very unengaging imo.

FTL is bad because it has it's normal difficulty as easy and hard as normal.

Its aesthetic is great though? All the ships are fantastic designs and the dialogues are suitably sci-fi desperate journey goodness.

My favorite ships are probably the Mantis ones. Very crabbish.

also the music is absolutely outstanding.

Agreed on both parts. I think the most frustrating thing about the final boss is if you had a bad run (or an amateur run), it feels literally impossible to win. I think a good roguelite boss should still feel possible on almost every run you have, even when you're green. Isaac and Dead Cells both do this well, since you always understand why you died, and the mistakes are nearly always avoidable. I don't know if this is really true, since I did not play that much of FTL, but its final boss feels more stats-based rather than skill-based, and that lead to me feeling frustrated since my mistakes were not at all obvious. And since I don't like doing homework for my games, e.g. reading wikis, I dropped it pretty quickly.

Wasn't it even more egregious from an animation/visual perspective? Like the dude had his gun right in the alien's face, but twists it away at the last second for the miss.

That was a really specific bug that was patched out like two days before that video came out on youtube, too--if an alien falls through a hole in the floor caused by fire on the human turn, then until aliens act again to-hit values are still calculated as if it was still where it originally was. In heavy cover, up one floor, though some roof.

Looked hilarious. Video games rule.

Man I don't know how Webms work.

The final boss is an explicit hurdle, a final test of your ship. If you've been going up against four-shield-four-weapon ships already, it's a bit harder than that. If you've been limping along that whole time, then it's going to be incredibly hard to beat, yes. But learning strategies to beat each of its phases is the way to go, understanding the mechanics of the game and the different weapons and ship equipment for kneecapping its strengths. Teleport your guys into the gun control rooms and kill the gunners and destroy the guns(or at least the most dangerous one, the missile turret). Just straight dump gunfire to overwhelm the defenses. Hack the shields and lay into it with gunfire while the shields are down. Use EMP weaponry to disable the engines so it can't evade. All valid tactics. One thing a lot of folks don't do is buff the engines a lot on their ship, which greatly increases evasion when manned.

FTL is a really, really good game, and while not perfect, the final battle is far from unfair. Hell, on Easy, you should be getting more than enough scrap to max out your ship's systems in every aspect, plus buy as many weapons, systems and crew as you like.

Every jump in FTL feels like I'm playing head-or-tails to either get hosed or not. The core gameplay is great, everything else just really bored me, not out of difficulty - I've bashed my head against harder games and came out of it enjoying them - but because apparently you gotta have a breadth of knowledge to not feel handicapped or just to not GET handicapped. Keep in mind I played it at release, so maybe it's less CYOA-ish.

Into the Breach is a much better game.
