my cat is norris posted:what the gently caress You might have heard them called sand fleas or simply sand crabs. Surf fishermen use them as bait a lot and call them all kinds of poo poo. They should not be confused with actual sand fleas though, which are smaller, look like this, and do bite, which is why sometimes when you leave the beach your lower legs look like they got lit up by mosquitos.

Today I learned about a crab called Hoplophrys oatesi aka The Candy Crab. It's unique colors allow it to hide among soft corals. Apparently it will also attach coral polyps to itself to maximize the effect. I lived for a year on Diego Garcia surrounded by crabs everywhere. I had four in burrows outside my door that would come out at night named Larry, Curly, Moe and Shemp. On more than one occasion, tiny little crabs would wander under my door and end up in the bathroom (I guess they smelled water?). At 6 am my half-asleep brain would always think they were gigantic spiders, even though those fortunately didn’t live on the island. I did get to hang out with coconut crabs though which was dope as gently caress.
