Seinen has always felt slightly extreme when I look at all the manga I've read and that road goes onwards. I don't mind serious adults living their lives but less about the violence.

I’ve been reading quite a few series lately, jumping from one to the next while waiting for chapters of ongoing series to come out. My head is swimming with tropes but I figured I could share some of my thoughts and recommendations. I’m guessing more than one of these has been brought up in this thread before. They’re split between shoujo, shounen, seinen and josei, but are generally in the romantic category. Lovely Complex This one came highly recommended from this thread and is about a tall girl and short boy who are classmates. It was cute and funny and I loved the art, but I felt like it could have been shorter. It spiraled a bit towards the end and got into the “monster of the week” rut. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone though. It stood in contrast to the next one, since I read them back-to-back. Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun/My Little Monster(???) This one grew on me. It starts out kinda weird and slow and the main characters aren’t particularly likeable to begin with, but I decided to stick with it and am very happy that I did. The story is basically about a guy who doesn’t want to go to school and a girl who is all about school. They are both social idiots, the guy being a bit bigger of an idiot. The art is great, the supporting cast is nuanced enough to make them more than “friend A, B & C” and the conclusion is satisfying. To me it stood in contrast to Lovely Complex since it avoided most of the tropes (not all of them, of course) and kept the story character-driven. Solid recommend. Kyou no Yuiko-san/Today’s Yukio-san Not sure what to say about this one. It was pretty short and not bad in any real way, it just didn’t really feel like it broke any new ground. If you’ve ran out of stuff to read and want to kill an afternoon go nuts. The story’s about a tsundere girl dating a pretty normal guy. Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou/The Kawai Complex Guide to Manors and Hostels A story about a guy moving into a boarding house to go to a nearby school. The boarding house hosts a bunch of weirdos including a cute girl. So yeah I guess you can see where that’s heading. It was a pretty good tale though. The story doesn’t focus on just the main couple but go into various levels of detail for the other residents which I found pretty interesting. I’d recommend this to anyone but especially to someone who wants romance with more slice of life in it. Also features the world’s greatest candidate for onryō-hood. Haji-Otsu A pretty short series about a girl with a crippling fear of boys being convinced by her friends to confess to someone as a test of courage. Super cute and sweet and heartwarming about two kids’ first love with a little bit of melancholia sprinkled in. Think sugarcoated marshmallow levels of cute and awkward. Great recommend for someone feeling a bit down or who just want some easily digested stuff. Hitorimi Haduki-san to An even shorter story about a 25 year old nerd who has never had a boyfriend and who gets set up with a teenager by her sister. Nothing special and it does address the age gap (though not exhaustively). Overall a good read that was fun and cute. Nothing special about it. Horimiya Ongoing, but the main couple has more or less resolved. I really like this series. It looks good, it’s funny, the characters feel alive and get plenty of room to grow on you and the plot moves at a solid pace. The story, in a nutshell, is about a misfit guy who has long hair and wears heavy clothing to hide piercings/tattoos, and a girl who has to take care of her brother so she doesn’t get much time to hang out with friends or do girly stuff but stays at home instead. They’re classmates and run into each other by happenstance and it goes from there. I’d easily recommend this to anyone looking for an easy and fun read. Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun Ongoing. Barely qualifies as romance. It’s more of a meta-story about being a shoujo mangaka told 4koma-style. Very funny and self-aware and the scanlations I’ve read were pretty good and conveyed the humour well. Along with Grand Blue one of few comics that make me laugh out loud. Watari-kun no xx ga Houkai Sunzen Ongoing. A bit of an oddity. The basic premise is that there’s a guy taking care of his kid sister at a relative’s place following the death of their parents when a childhood antagonist shows up. It has some pretty dark undertones and strays into harem territory at times so it might not be for everyone, but overall it’s pretty good and the plot is keeping me interested for now. Bokura wa Itsumo Very interesting. It’s about four friends, one of which just returned, living in a small town and the relationships they have with each other or others. Has a pretty mature feel to it and looks great. Mainly deals with love, but also addresses the melancholia of being stuck in Smalltowne and growing up. Unfortunately the latest update I could find was almost a year ago so it might have been dropped by scanlators as I can only find translations up to chapter 45 and there doesn’t seem to be a licensed release.
