What ever happened to Akira Yamaoka? He produced SH4 (which made its terrible sound design that much more disappointing), went over to Grasshopper, I think worked on Shadows of the Damned, and then...? I'd love to hear more of his work, the SH2 soundtrack makes for a pretty decent trip-hop album.

He's mostly done Grasshopper stuff (Sine Mora, Liberation Maiden, Ranko Tsukigime, Silver Case HD), some direction (Lollipop Chainsaw, Let it Die) and a couple of film works. He's still doin' poo poo!

I’ve skipped most scary games because they just get to me. Never even tried anything like Silent Hill. Nope nope nope. Even certain parts of Souls games give me the willies.

That being said, I’m about halfway through RE7:VR and not only am I proud of myself, I have officially experienced fear sweat.

To be fair RE7 VR is about 10 time scarier than Silent Hill is gonna be at this point in time.

But yeah Silent Hill straight up disturbed me as a kid. I remember playing it on the TV in my room in the dark and having to periodically quit just because I was too freaked out. I think those early PSX horror games are what turned me into a horror junky. I loved how engaged they made me feel compared to other games. I think I've played 90% of horror games made since then that aren't blatant shovelware trash.

I really miss being able to be scared like that tbh. It was exhilarating. If anything ever comes out that makes me feel like Silent Hill did again they get all of my GOTY awards. The closest things have been RE7 in VR and Outlast but both were mostly due to parlor tricks and they didn't even hit 1/10th of how freaked out I was playing SH in junior High. Pure nightmare, sleep loss fuel.

I wasn't a kid when SH1 came out, but I remember playing through it on an all nighter because when I stopped playing, it was like 2am and holy gently caress it was a foggy night as well, and that poo poo was not cool.

I spent a good chunk of that night just trying to figure out poo poo like the piano puzzle and just virtually sitting in a corner hoping nothing showed up on the screen.

The closest I have come in years to that same hyperdread feeling was when PT came out.

Silent Hill 1 is still my favorite. I love the environments and the story.

But I can't be the only one who felt that the combat wasn't that difficult for Sh 1-3? You actually got some decent melee weapons and the enemies weren't really all that aggressive.

4 was by far the scariest for me, because they make your apartment your safe space and then poo poo gets scary in there and I dreaded having to go back and the sound design was so creepy I had to turn my sound off

Edit: also the unkillable ghosts were motherfuckers and annoying from a design perspective but the way they affected your eyes and ears was really good and creepy

Shame about the level design and having to run them all twice because the rest of the game was pretty good. Even if it doesn’t actually take place in Silent Hill.

It's very cool, but the number of games that would actually warrant that kind of treatment is incredibly limited. Video games tend to get outdone in way that other media doesn't really. I can't really think of much other PS2 or even PS3 era stuff that is timeless in the way that SOTC is. Most of the greatest old games are either fine the way they are, or have become less relevant over the years.

Is demon’s souls on a scale that’s as large as Bluepoint inferred in that interview about their next project? I’m trying to beat DS2 before the DaS1 remaster comes out (which loving bluepoint should’ve done, if what I’ve heard about the remake is true...) and I’m bummed I missed the opportunity to play it before the servers went down, but I was assuming because of some things that Epic Name Bro said that it would get a remake or some sort of version playable on current gen.

But also someone mentioned on the SotC subreddit that jacksepticeye hinted that Bluepoint is doing a TLG remaster, which would be hilarious because of how many people made that joke in this thread and would be so amazing with SotC level of perfection and polish (even tho the game is a masterpiece as is, and I will fight anyone who shits on that game bc of the silly technical issues that ultimately have no impact on the game whatsoever unless you’re a shitboy like a friend of mine who said Bloodborne was bad because it only ran at 30 FPS).

I wanted a bloodborne boyz tag but now I want to be the only person with a cleverly named The Last Guardian tag, cause there’s several of you who know if anyone were to be the only person with a tag/member of a SA games forum fan club for TLG it would be me. I mean I have this dumb avatar for arguing about how Bethesda Pinball’s metacritic is (or was) higher than TLG in that other games sub forum that I don’t think exists anymore.

Edit: chiming into agree with everyone’s opinions re: sound design in silent hill games, holy poo poo, talk about a game that integrates music/sound design in a way that literally changes the impact the game has on you which is pure loving terror in this case. I was going to bring up SotC or especially TLG earlier when Nier/other game soundtracks were being discussed as having a soundtrack that really makes the game more emotional in the case of the TLG and SotC, because drat, half of the emotion comes from the score in the final Last Guardian cutscene.. but yeah because I’ve never been brave enough to even attempt a Silent Hill game after watching a friend play 2 and 3, I just couldn’t believe a game could be absolutely dripping with atmosphere/horror and I realize now that a huge part of that has to do with its sound design/music. I think the combat legitimately feels more difficult because the music is so god drat foreboding..

I think Ico is out of the question because they said in an interview posted recently ITT that their next project will be on a much larger scale, and that SotC was good practice for their next endeavor. Bluepoint could poo poo out a loving perfect Ico remake in a weekend at this point. they could literally reuse a ton of SotC assets and model a few things and the rest of the map which is tiny in the amount of time it took them to make a colossus arena. I’m hoping they have actually made it already and all the cryptic poo poo that’s been posted on the SotC subreddit is just like something an intern is up to to hype it up, and when the community finally solves whatever puzzle they’ve put out they just shadow drop it out of nowhere to everyone who’s beaten the SotC remake or gotten the 79 coins or something.. it just seems too easy, but also Ico would need a massive overhaul because there’s at least 4 sections of that game that are just straight up bad, like making a near frame perfect jump that if you botch will kill you.. (not including almost every other area in the game where dying will set you back to the last save point over some bullshit), but it’s also a case of a game being dated in the way people were just talking about, with regard to remakes.

Actually now that I think about it, It controls so horribly compared to the original SotC even and would actually need a massive rehaul in terms of controls and Yorda’a AI... plus camera and other stuff too. Even then it wouldn’t be the project they said was way larger in terms of workload than the SotC remake was.

Edit: so yeah we can narrow it down to The Last Guardian or Demon’s Souls.
