the amount of hate rossi is getting for this is loving insane, i mean it was a poorly executed move but wickens left the door wide open. and really, every single driver in indycar has done that same exact thing at least once, many of them a hell of a lot more than once. rhr seemed to do it like every other race back in the late 00's/early 2010's and i never saw anywhere near this amount of poo poo thrown at him for it.

it's like you fuckers have never in your life watched people racing for the win.

Off the top of my head, RHR's poo poo with Servia at Edmonton in 2011 and him punting Newgarden at Long Beach in 2014 were both worse than this.

I think a lot of it had to do with A. rapid reaction, B. the fact that Wickens had a hell of a race and by all means should have had the win, and C. Rossi not taking fault.

That being said, another SeaBass win is cool, especially after the crash at Indy last year (even if it was a matter of "right place right time", he did have to work his way to be in the right place at the right time).

All in all, I think the race was good, the new cars caught a lot of drivers off guard it seems with how squirrelly they are, which helped with a lot of the racing.

Also nose cam is amazing.

like, i still dislike rhr today entirely because of how he drove back then. it was so reliable that he'd dive-bomb someone on a nearly weekly basis, i think he took out simona like three times in one season doing that poo poo. he's not nearly as dumb now but he's also not very relevant anymore either so v:shobon:v

i mean i get being bummed for wickens; i sure am, and yeah he did deserve to win or at least to not be taken out like that. but for one, it isn't like he's not gonna be in contention to win a lot more races, frankly it's pretty obvious after this race that he's probably a future championship contender. for two, when you're in second place and the leader leaves a gap like that, you fill the fuckin gap, like that's racing 101. if rossi had made a habit of driving like this up to this point then yeah, all the hate would be warranted, but he really hasn't.

as far as not taking the blame, yeah, that's lovely, but i'm fairly certain that driving for andretti autosport comes with the condition that you are barred from ever admitting fault in anything ever.

e: ultimately, if you replace wickens with dixon and rossi with sato, everyone in this thread would be talking about how good a finish it was and how it was great that sato went for it even though it didn't work.

The other thing is if Sato made that move we'd all be going "NO ATTACK NO CHANCE" endlessly, so there's also that to consider.

Not really. Sato would have taken himself out and the guy he was racing against would have driven away or at least not fallen so far back. Rossi ultimately just lost one spot in going for the win while KO-ing the leader, which is cosmically unjust.

So a guy next to me was listening on the scanner and this is apparently what happened. Wickens was not ready for the restart because he thought they were going another lap under caution. He was complaining that the pace car shut of the lights and got off the track at the last minute and it caught him off guard because he didn't think they were going green and as a result had a bad restart.

harperdc
Jul 24, 2007

Wickens admitted as much post-race.

And yeah, this is definitely a zero-to-dogpile situation. Partially because Wickens is a cool rookie but the hate for Rossi has purely to do with who he hit (same move on a Penske getting the same reaction around here? Probably not) and not who he is. “Scott Speed with a 500 win” isn’t exactly something he was called at all.

Not defending the move at all having seen it, and I guess I shouldn’t be so surprised at some of The Worst Posters trying to bury somebody immediately, but here we are.

Just now watched the race. New car is as good as ABC is bad.

I'm with PT on that, Wickens left the door open and tried to close it up a bit late with Rossi having already lost it.

Also, if they've treated the runway markers in years past... Why not this year?

I celebrated the RHR championship and 500 wins, y'all can suck it. He earned that with those last few races, especially with Power loving throwing the car into the wall while trying to lap RHR at Fontana.

i dunno what the gently caress threads you were posting in but rhr never got that kind of hate from basically anyone that wasn't me or two or so other people. most everyone was fine with him aside from laughing when he divebombed himself into another wreck, and some really loved him.

i also remember most people just laughing at power for choking the championship away.

Power, Newgarden, SeaBass, Marco (for the lulz factor, mostly), Hinch, Jones, or Wickens all would be great 500 winners this year.

I hate stats like this. Does it count as an on-track pass when someone spins or gets a puncture or crashes out, and a car passes them? Should it? Does it inflate the numbers a little bit when there are a lot of spins or punctures and crashes like there were during the race? Then what are we measuring, exactly?

On the media center TVs during on-track sessions they show timing and scoring stats. There's a stat they track called On-Track Passes (OTP) that they don't distribute to the public. Arni, the poster of that tweet and IndyCar PR staff nerd, explained to me what it encompasses:

OTP occurs when one car passes another on the racing surface under green. It does NOT include any pass where one or both cars are on pit lane. It does include passes when a car spins because it occurs on the track.

I hope this long post from my phone helps

So I compared St Pete sector times 2017 to 2018 and noticed something interesting about the overall faster lap speeds. Check out my article to see which sector and read me hate on Graham Rahal for finishing P2.

It sucks we gotta wait over 3 more weeks until the next race, but then we get Phoenix/Long Beach/Barber on consecutive weekends leading up to THE MONTH OF MAY!
