Is there a good explanation of this out there? I don't really understand how public/private businesses work with respect to buyouts from groups like that.

Basically private equity firms, once they take something over, add the cost of the takeover to the debt of the company. So in iHeartMedia's case it cost the equity firm something like 15 billion to acquire it and that debt went right into their ledger.

Remington went bankrupt in the 1980s and a lot of its business was spun off and bought by FN, which is owned by Herstal Group. Ironic that a lot of patriotic Americana is now majority owned by the Belgian government. Anyway when people talk about Remington they may be informally talking about one of a number of companies.

Thanks!

In the case of iHeartMedia, would they otherwise have been able to survive? Or were they distressed, and the equity firm thought they could squeeze enough money out of the liquidation.

So is the problem that they got 15 billion in debt and had to pay interest on it and were less likely to get loans to expand/develop so they eventually weren’t able to pay back the debt, or that they were pretty much screwed anyway and the equity firms come in to pick the carcass for what it’s worth.

I keep wondering whether the fact that politicians are notably dumber now is something to do with lead. The politicians of the age to be at the peak of their careers now are the ones in the generation most severely affected by lead pollution. And they seem *so* dumb compared to the Parkland school students. It can't just be age. You look at what politicians in the past wrote, and it's so eloquent, so finely written (shh, don't mention the slavery), but Trump writes like something from Idiocracy and talks like a drunk farmer. Current politicians are from the generation that caused that huge crime wave from the '70s to the '90s.

Yeah probably, individual boomers can be smart, but the average ones are so much dumber than the generations on either side of them, their lead-addled brains aren't their fault but it sucks we all have to be ruled by a series of incurious idiot kings.
