Pretty much- here “liberal” is basically republican and Tory and Labor is basically Democrat (with more socialist aspects) or UK labor

AFAIK the're probably closer to Libertarians in the American political arena. So the concern is that they're the types to think government funding/support of education/environmental sectors is anti-free-market, I would assume. I'm sure the Aussies will be able to give you the proper rundown, but I fully expect "we wanted to build Rapture in the Great Bight, but the front fell off".

Being a relative newb to watches beyond battery powered quartz movement, I could use some input... My better half bought me a Victorinox Automatic as an engagement present (we've been married 6 years now) which I really love, but it's been picking up more and more time (in the realm of 5+minutes a week). I sent it in to get serviced, and they come back with $375 to rebuild. With the cost of shipping (another $35), that puts me just $100 shy of buying a brand new version of the same watch. Digging around, it looks like they expect this every 4-6 years anyways. I like it enough to pay it this time..but do it again in another 5 years? Ouch. Is this common amongst automatics? Ultimately, I need to decide to either decline the work and keep the watch as is and constantly adjusting it, or shelling out and getting it fixed now, and re-evaluate later on down the line. I can afford it which is nice, but that's still a lot of $$$ to fix something that I wouldn't expect to be a problem after a few comparatively short years... What would you do, goons? Sentimental value is pushing me towards the latter right now but I'm open to outside perspective.. FWIW, the better half doesn't care so much and just wants me to be happy. Have I mentioned she's awesome?

But I'm not sure how that really helps you when you aren't trying to sell it. My wife was being very thoughtful and sent away my Tag years ago to be rebuilt, as it was just sitting in a drawer. They did, it worked fine again, and then I wore it in a pool (it's supposed to be waterproof). Turns out the shop she sent it to wasn't Tag certified and didn't replace the seals like they were supposed to (she of course had no idea that was a thing to look for). So now it's hosed and sits in a drawer. Fixing it is worth way more than replacing it.

Isn't it a general rule that the more expensive the watch, sorry ahem, chronographer the worst it actually is at keeping time? I would treat them more like fashion accessories that can give you a rough estimate of the time than something to really rely on.

Bajaha posted:Isn't it a general rule that the more expensive the watch, sorry ahem, chronographer the worst it actually is at keeping time? Basically yeah. Most automatic watches aren't great at keeping good time, and as they get older and the mainspring tires out, they just get worse. I need to send my Tissot off to get rebuilt here fairly soon, as it's losing about a minute per day, and I've kind of been putting it off for a while now... The Speedmaster I have, though (which I rarely wear because it has a lot of sentimental value and it's also a bit too bling for me), keeps time like a champ, when it's wound at least. Still doesn't even come close to a $20 Timex though.

There was recently a chance to take over a store 5 minutes away from my current one, but I didn't put in for it since I decided I'd be a poor fit. That store has severe personnel issues that needs an experienced store manager adept at handling interpersonal disputes because its going to have alot of them. (The assistant there got the job due to lack of options and already half his staff has asked for transfers. Dude is horrible at managing personnel issues. And an rear end in a top hat.) It also has severe operational issues that I see no way out of unless they radically change how they let that store manager run the store. I know there's not a lot of avenues open in retail, but it's almost amusing how surprised managers are when someone doesn't want to be a manager. Some folks just don't want to herd other folks, or know they don't have any skill in it. My dad, a retired mechanical engineer, had that problem at his longest-running job. He'd maxed out but didn't want to move into management. He wanted to be an engineer. They just couldn't fathom that.

I have this problem all the time at work when the annual review process comes up and we have to set goals. I only have one more promotion I can get in my current job, so they keep talking to me about stuff that would lead to management, and it is somehow difficult for them to understand that I am perfectly happy doing the 'sole contributor' thing, and do not have any desire to manage people ever again (been there, done that, hated it). I can make plenty of money, more than some manager positions even, if I can get even up to midpoint in the final pay grade doing exactly what I'm doing now, so I have no desire to go into a role I would be unhappy in, and probably would be terrible at. I got a nice surprise yesterday, the company awarded me a stock grant for excellent performance - not immediately vested, which doesn't matter to me, but it's a pretty nice grant, worth about 7.5% of my annual salary. In addition I got an almost 10% cash bonus last month, and a $1000 bonus (everyone got it for the new tax plan) in January. It's been a pretty drat good year so far, and the annual merit raises will be in the next month or two.

Watch chat: I like chronograph sand such, but I just don't see the value in anything that costs more than about $30 and doesn't do anything but tell time. I admire the craftsmanship, and the mechanical aspect, but I can spend that money elsewhere. Considering a smart watch, though. I haven't worn a watch in so long I don't know if I can deal with something hanging off my wrist again. I just saw a Wing Stop TV ad for their new online ordering, and it features modem sounds. Is it bad that I know that it wasn't a high-speed connection because it didn't have the rising-note "wang!" near the end? Or just super-nerdy/old?

Eh, I'm already management at my store and have expressed interest in running my own store. However that is really a stepping stone for me into the corporate side of the company, preferably the training department. One of the things I draw the most enjoyment from is training new team members, teaching long time people new stuff and general poo poo like that. Gives me the warm and fuzzies.

So are you obligated to stay thin and healthy for you SO? Or if you get fat is that grounds for them to bail on you? Because one of my high school friends is in a really bad place because her husband left her. She has put on quite a lot of weight and has been unable to lose any of it. I guess he just packed his poo poo and left and his reason is "she's too fat to have sex with anymore."

You are never obligated to stay with anyone for any reason, so yeah that would be grounds to bail. What if you SO stopped brushing their teeth? Or never clipped their nails? It's not cool to do that but if one person is unhappy in the relationship (regardless of cause) then it isn't really a relationship anymore is it?

Also my wife just called right as the race went green and a car spun in front of me. She couldn't believe the noise of people screaming. I think I've found religion at this race.

The sort of person that would just up and dick-move like that is probably lovely in all sorts of other ways and is probably ultimately unlhealthy for her. Or it's more nuanced than that.

Stuff that can spill over into the rest of the relationship. Maybe it was just a final straw thing. Or maybe he really is that shallow.

I'd like a Speedmaster Pro "Moonwatch", but that's more to do with the whole space programme thing, I don't have any specific interest in watches per se, or have a very high opinion of people who view them as status symbols. Much like cars, in that way. If you want to buy a Ferrari or a Rolex because of the specific technical attraction to that model, or the history etc, that's great, but if you're buying one just because it's a Ferrari or a Rolex, you're doing it wrong.
