To be fair I think most skiers have gone flying like that person in yellow at some point or another in their time going downhill, though you wouldn't expect it to happen on a chairlift.

Another good reason to wear helmets I guess. Amazing none of those first folks died.

I�m not a bridge builder, but that video will probably be really frickin useful in figuring put what happened. Just being able to point to the first failure area on video should speed up the forensics on this a good bit.

The state of the column on the canal side of the bridge segment made me point to it like a bird dog, anyone who's real familiar with that sort of thing would have bullseyed that as the most likely failure point immediately

Or more verbosely, as concrete ages, atmospheric CO2 starts carbonizing the slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) in it. When rain wets a new concrete wall the slaked lime turns the water alkaline, but in old concrete this doesn't work to protect the rebar anymore because of carbonization and the rebar starts rusting, causing it to expand as iron bonds oxygen to itself. This expansion inside the concrete causes it to crumble.

So when the one-way gearing for a chairlift fails (and the three different brake systems), gravity wants to pull everything down. If the chairs were empty or there were as much weight going down as going up, it wouldn't do that. You can see the chairlift slow down considerably after it loses all the weighted people on it.
