I hate quoting software where you have to visit a website to get the quote. You know they're tracking you. And 2 minutes after you open it... they call you back ."DID YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS?" Or, the software where they email you the quote, and the web server behind it is slow as fuak and it takes 10 seconds to auto-preview the email. Extra pain in the dick when you are looking though a bunch of quotes trying to find one

Earlier: Me: Hey, I see that the UI color palettes for our PROD and QA/test environments are identical. Yes, QA has a text banner but otherwise they look the same and it confuses the hell out of me, so it's probably confusing other people too. We should probably change QA to a different color. Boss: No, our documentation shows the green banner so people will get confused if the color is different. Me: That, uh, doesn't seem like a convincing argument. We're less worried about someone mistakenly pushing something out in production than we are about them getting frustrated because the color scheme doesn't match our documentation? Boss: Why are are you fixated on this issue? Just drop it. Today: Me: After repeated complaints from our super users, I have modified the window titles so that QA says "QA" and production says "[public facing site name]". This seems like a reasonable alternative since we decided not to change any UI configuration. Boss: Why aren't we changing the color? I think if you check the configuration the system will allow that.

I asked my contact with said company for files on the off chance its Arduino level easy fixes just so I don't have to waste time sending the single board I have from my customer to them, then manufacturer and back down the chain. Yes I have dabbled in screwing around with dumping and screwing around with prop chips and gear in another life. Have built my own NAND chip dumper. But now it seems (by the email responses alone) that all these engineers at said multinational want me to do the dirty (fun) work. And of course now I'm home, drinking beers I realise I forgot to bring a sample board home. EDIT: This isn't a product anyone should worry about, it isn't a Samsung exploding battery or washing machine catching on fire thing. This time. Also not Samsung related at all (for once in my life). It's industrial gas related. so the fire will start far away and gently caress you up later. Humphreys fucked around with this message at 16:43 on Mar 16, 2018 |

Hmmm here's a weird one. I've been ripping my son's movies from DVD to put on a tablet so he can watch them in the car. I reformatted the micro SD card, and now videos past a certain point in the folder won't play. There is a point where they just stop working alphabetically - like Happy Feet and all files before that work, but then Madagascar and all files right after it don't. Corrupt SD card?
|
# ? Mar 16, 2018 20:03 |

Has the card worked before? Loads of fake ones report the size incorrectly and writing past the size of the actual mislabelled card just writes the data into nowhere.
|
# ? Mar 16, 2018 20:18 |

That was my first thought too. You can find tools online that'll let you test for real vs reported capacity. Usually when an SD card is starts to die you can read but not write. If you have the time maybe reformat it and see if the issue persists?

Office is the size of a city block. I work a lot of nights a weekends. 1-2 people in the building for 12 hours shifts. Company/HR has decided that having the lights off is a saftey issue. And that company policy is all lights, are allways to be on. Issues with this. 1. About 1/10 fluro lights are allways on anyway. 2. Hr also has paper signs at every switch saying to turn them off when not in use. 3. And this is the one that shits me. The whole building is on a loving timer. 7pm every day they all turn off. Hey guys if its a requirement, then change/disable the timer? - Silence. 4. The cleaners come in about midnight and turn poo poo off when they leave. Soooo twice a shift I run around, turn on every light I can find. Offices empty for the weekend, on, meeting rooms that are never ever going to be used, on. Tonight I also turned on all their aircon units to run all weekend. Same poo poo apparently happened in our sydney noc, they had their switches taken away entirely. Billion dollar company folks. So many more important things we could be doing and caring about.

Things pissing me off : my team getting in a tizzy because the controller (just a win10 box) for a conference room updated today and didn't auto login. Cue "we have to disable updates until this is fix, let's disable the update policy, blah blah blah." Firstly I'd rather turn on 4 machines once a month than have non updated machines that are connected to the Internet, secondly the updates already ran this month, turning off updates is a bit of a waste of time but whatever floats your boat I suppose.

Because our sales department micromanages our marketing department instead of working with them. our new marketing director has went rogue and setup shop on Google docs. Tried to explain to him that this is an account that needs to be managed by IT, they can't just make a silo somewhere. And there's going to be a shitstorm the first time sales finds out they are saving documents somewhere they don't have access too...

Something changed a ton of PCs IP addresses to the wrong subnet or just to DHCP when we don't run DHCP at all Now we're flooded with calls of people that can't get to anything on the network. This is on top of our toolbox MSP taking "Upgrade to IE 11" as "Uninstall IE 10". If I drank, I would be face down on my desk right now. Nice avatar Bob. At least it's a Sci-Fi anime?

Yeah, that's plenty of reason to drink in itself. Nothing except routers and a few other critical roles should be truly static, everything else that needs an unchanging IP address should be using reserved leases in DHCP. Static IPs on normal PCs are a recipe for stupid poo poo to happen.

I consider DHCP and DNS integral parts of every modern network and feel like they should be handling all IP assignment, not T1. Only the hardware those services rely on should be hardcoded.

I register a node with our networking group and ask for an address on a subnet, they put it in DNS and give it an IP, my provisioning system fetches that and installs the node with a static address. I never have to think about the IP ever again.

We run static on workstations cause of our stupid terrible production app. We have to register individual things like printers via IP address of Printer + IP address of Terminal. I want to be rid of it but the newest version of the app is a poo poo show.
