Some of it is probably a move towards a circular economy, part of it is domestic signalling “we won’t be the worlds dumping ground”, part of it is that because waste is an environmental issue, the WTO can’t do much when China tells the world yeah we’re not taking most recycling materials, the materials we do take have to meet unreasonable standards, and even if they do we have reduced the import quotas and changed them from annually to quarterly. Having spoken to a few people now I think there’s a pretty strong case that it’s mostly hey trump, let’s see you deal with all your recycling when the value craters because the biggest buyer is out.

If we have the opportunity to bring refugees here, regardless of their origin, are we ethically motivated to do so? From my side, I'm happy to accept as many 'refugee' south africans, assuming they are actually refugees rather than fleeing high crime rates, as we can take, so long as they don't count towards our refugee quota. I am especially happy to accept them if they can get here with all their cash and whatever intact, because, ka-ching. Then we'll send them all out to our rural towns to bolster the numbers there. Heck, send them all up North to the Kimberly and they can finally turn that place into the amazing food bowl they keep saying it's supposed to be.
