Sigourney Cheevos posted:If you fill all 92.4 ft³ of the cargo area with gas, you only need to get ~4.15 mpg to make it without refueling. The two tons of gas(4442 lbs) might slow you down a bit though. However, if you can get 15mpg at whatever speed you're running, you'd only need ~170 additional gallons, which could be built into a tank the size of a queen bed that would only need to be ~8.2" deep Ed Bolian, current record holder, did it with https://www.google.com/amp/s/jalopnik.com/meet-the-guy-who-drove-across-the-u-s-in-a-record-28-h-1454092837 posted:Let's start with the fuel tanks. There are two of them, both 22 gallons – and that's in addition to the 23-gallon tank Mercedes installed at the factory. The result is a constant, pervasive gas smell when you're standing anywhere in the car's vicinity. But it also means the car can hold 67 gallons of fuel – or, put another way, over 400 pounds of gasoline. Hence the active suspension. Averged high 13's mpg, 98 mph.

LIDAR does not care about daylight so this can be called broad daylight. Basically line all Uber execs against the wall. I'm not talking about the fatal collision: Arse Technica posted:For example, in that March 2017 collision in Tempe, the Uber driver reported that he was traveling 38 miles per hour (61 km/h) at the time of the crash—just shy of the 40-mile-per-hour speed limit. TL;DR: Murdercar doesn't understand slowing down in potentially risky situations and just zips along at its technically correct mandated maximum speed. Please tell me those huge accumulations of cylinders are the empties, and the full tanks are kept in much smaller batches

The tanks are made out of that flammable aluminum siding.

Ars continues to do follow ups on the Uber crash. Videos from Tempe residents going through the same stretch at the same time of night show a pretty clearly lit area. It's dark but not nearly as dim as the dashcam video shows.

Controlled industrial explosion alert: this is the unfinished TV tower erected in the middle of Yekaterinburg, Russia. This thing is expected to go down tonight at midnight EST (on 3/24 at 7 AM Moscow time). There will be a live stream (currently offline): https://www.youtube.com/c/E1RU_EKB/live https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7azreYtxong Please don't blame me if the live stream thing doesn't work out. I will be just as disappointed as you are.

Dashcams generally aren't very good at picking up dim light. Watch basically any nighttime dashcam video and you'll see this. I think it's set so that it's easier for something like a license plate to stand out, rather than any defining features of the surrounding area, but I might be wrong on that part.

Speaking of municipal/traffic engineering fuckups, I'm the wonderful, beautiful, well lit pathway across the median that doesn't have any crosswalks. You know, the pathway that leads directly to where the person got hit while jaywalking.

Struensee posted:Surely you're not suggesting that they tampered with the video! I think the Arizona governor, uber, and many others would prefer that this accident was entirely the fault of a dead 49 year old homeless woman, rather than the fault of a poorly regulated company acting recklessly. If the Arizona government let killbots onto public roads as part of their "open for business" strategy, that looks bad for a lot of important people. So I think it's possible the police released the misleading lovely video in part because it makes it look like that crash was unavoidable. All the jaywalking hobo's fault, nothing to see here.

If the Arizona government let killbots onto public roads as part of their "open for business" strategy, that looks bad for a lot of important people. legally it's straight up her fault because arizona's laws are as regularly anti-pedestrian as they are in many other states. she explicitly had to cross at a crosswalk, not doing so and failing to yield to the vehicle made it her fault in the eyes of arizona state law. the simplest explanation here is that uber had a cheap rear end dash cam maricopa county had the second highest number of pedestrian fatalities in the us in 2016, after los angeles county, which has way more people. it's a dangerous environment to be a pedestrian in and the law is firmly on the side of drivers

Yeah, a few minutes of noodling around in google maps suggests that 'deliberately hostile to pedestrians' is in fact a design criteria and not some sort of unfortunate happenstance because holy poo poo Tempe looks like the least walkable place imaginable.

If she survived I’m sure Uber would be suing her for damage to their vehicle.
