The other thing that scares me with the Dutch girls is that as far as anyone can tell they were doing everything more or less right once getting lost, with the possible exception of going over a lovely bridge, and that can be excused by ignorance, not stupidity. Once things start to go wrong and you're isolated, you can go to absolutely heroic lengths to stay alive and still die with nobody knowing what happened to you.

And then a bunch of strangers will probably try to make it about aliens or something, which is really just adding insult to injury.

.
There was an old show called "Will They Survive" or something like that where they would tell two stories of people getting into serious trouble and at the end of the episode you find out if they made it out alive or died. There was one episode where this guy did absolutely everything right.

Told people where he was going
When to expect him back
The route he was planning on hiking
He had water, food, flares, a tent, etc

And he still got lost in the woods and died. I think it was almost a year before someone stumbled on his camp. It's a little sobering to think about, but we're all gonna die, and we're usually only one silly mistake away from bringing it about quicker.

Poker player/video game streamer Sven Reichardt once told the stream about the time he got lost/got fairly close to being lost and dead from a snake bite in the jungle 30 minutes from civilization. He ended up on a hill somewhere in pitch blackness on very uneven ground. What he and his cousin ended up doing was using their camera's flash to illuminate a section of ground in front of them, cross that, take a new picture and repeat. I suspect that this is what might have led to the weird pictures on the recovered phone from the Dutch girls.

Meh, I've gone two weeks without power after a hurricane. Four extra days on a cruise ship with partial power was easy. We had movies, comedy shows, smuggled liquor, food. We also got that cruise free, a future cruise free, and $500 each.

I've been lucky with hurricanes and tornadoes. I was in Diamond IL a few years ago and got to hear a tornado rip through my buddy's neighbor's house and we didn't even lose power in his basement as we sat there watching football and drinking. When we finally got the all clear we went out to make sure the neighbors were all right (they were) and then they tried to drive me back to Chicago but all the streets were closed. So really I got a little bit of excitement and an extra day of drinking in the burbs with my friends!

Hurricane-wise I went through Hugo and Andrew when I was a kid in Florida, and then Jeanne knocked down part of the hotel I was staying at in the 2000's for my cousin's wedding. During Jeanne my cousins and I went across the street during the storm because we thought the bar was open, but I guess they had just left the lights on so we ran back to the hotel. I was 24 years old and got screamed at by my mom for going out in it, but we were fine. Cat 3 might as well just be a thunderstorm.

Just tornadoes here but I live in a 12X40 singlewide and it once took on 70 mph straight line winds. I figured it'd rip the box off the trailer but it just sounded like what I imagine skydiving sounds like. Life in tornado areas is an adventure. In my last house we lost all power completely and the last report we heard was "TORNADO COMING. GET TO SAFE SPACE" so we were hiding in the lowest closet. I figured it was safe after a few minutes and ran upstairs to take a poo poo. While I was deucin' the tornado touched down about a block from my house. It blew out windows and threw window mounted air conditioner units back into the house. I rode it out on the toilet, determined to die making GBS threads.

The Schlitterbahn Indictment thread in GBS reminded me of this gem of an FDA citation I stumbled across at work: https://www.fda.gov/ICECI/EnforcementActions/WarningLetters/2017/ucm557859.htm

I'd venture to say most of us know not to buy a miracle cure combination antivenom/MRSA treatment but it horrifies me to know there were people potentially relying on these "medications" for the treatment or serious ailments. They eventually got caught but the FDA is so resource thin it takes years for things like this to be flagged and shut down.

The Schlitterbahn/Verrückt case reminded me of this because it's another example of "regulations in place being flagrantly ignored or compliance flat out lied about for economic gain," at the cost of human life. The fact that there is zero nationalized standard for ride safety, inspections, etc. outside of a handful of ASTM regulations (that your own park engineer can sign off on and have zero inspection to confirm) in the United States doesn't help either. The indictment is here: http://www.kansascity.com/latest-ne...readmore_inline

"The market" doesn't correct dick. Had the kid who died not been a state rep's (white) kid this ride would likely still be operating.
