The one thing that irked me was that Travis kind of strong-armed the story. I may be mis-remembering, but the solution to the mystery was forced by Errol's interaction with the Banshee that ended in her essentially giving them the answer in a neat little package and I don't feel like there was any character choice involved in earning it. To be fair Griffin claimed he had a hunch before that whole interaction, and Travis had to have some way of moving the story forward to keep the length of the arc manageable, but the way that it happened seemed a little too easy. Like what would have happened if they'd gone to the Banshee immediately after the casino, or Errol had just gone with the two amicable goons? Would they have wrapped the arc up by the end of episode 3?

I imagine that, if they continue, the ease of this one will be punished by the Banshee at a later time. It's the first story, it's meant to be a little easier than the rest.

Also, since they had more leads, if they had gone straight to the Banshee, they might not've taken the offer as easily.

It’s a tricky thing to balance for sure. You want to put the onus on the players to explore the space and solve the puzzle, but you’re also playing for an audience and you gotta have something to move the plot along if the crew starts getting stuck. Being confined to a necessarily-short experimental arc gives you less wiggle room, too.

Overall I didn’t mind it but yeah, for as much as Travis set it up as “it’s gonna be up to YOU to pay attention and crack the case” it didn’t quite pan out that way. But eh, I still liked it the best, and if it’s the full season, they’ll have more room to try stuff.

Yeah, I don't get what people mean by this being a fun mystery to try to solve before the boys did. They didn't. Travis literally handed it to them because time was almost up. If it had gotten down to time and Travis said 'so who do you think did it?' that may have been interesting, but the concept of the time limit seemed to disappear, too. Someone else mentioned being worried if they continued Dust and it was all mysteries, and I agree. This wasn't a a great mystery, and I personally find any and all werewolf vs vampire stories to be immediately tiresome.

I'm also confused about their connection to the town. The sheriff said he didn't expect them to get to town so soon. But Errol is literally from this town, and an active politician there. So did they travel here from the agency they work for, or are they local agents, or what?

I know a lot of folks think Amnesty was awful and now seem a bit defensive of Dust, but this one just had nothing to offer me, personally.

I'm pretty sure the announcement next week will be there's no Justin arc and they're jumping to the next season. Not sure why they want to be coy about their plans, but I'm wondering if they'll decide to start an entirely new game rather than picking back up one of the mini arcs.

I think that came from a disconnect between Griffin and Travis about the characters. From the beginning I could tell they were on different pages. Griffin setup his character as someone with powers related to the neighborhood while Travis was explaining that the characters were called in from elsewhere for their agency.

So far I think I actually liked Commitment the most out of the three arcs.

I enjoyed listening to Dust, but the utter lack of conflict was a glaring issue. Not the lack of combat necessarily, but everyone they talked to was friendly and cooperative, even the thugs working for the criminal mastermind and the criminal mastermind himself. The setup was amazing, but the tension didn't really carry through to the actual storyline.

But the boys were having a lot more fun and goofing a lot more than the other arcs. The extended bit where they clown on Errol for ringing the bell was hilarious. (Also, the entire scene with Dylan explaining everything was one of the most powerful in the whole show.)

Yeah both Dylan's dialogue and Augustus' attempt to convince him it wasn't his fault were really good.

Dust had some cool moments for sure. Maybe I'm coming around on it a little...I still hope that if it gets a full season it opens up and gets a little more varied outside of Western tropes.

I think the best tension in Dust would come from the debt and corruption point systems, which this mini-arc didn't have enough time to have any repercussions since those have to be longer term payoffs.

I forgot the deal with Gandy's pince-nez, and thought that Augustus running off with them was part of some plan that became fruitless when the NPC killed the villain.

Justin had the most entertaining player character in every mini-arc so far, in my opinion. Unless his 4 Sherlock Holmes trying to find out who the real Sherlock Holmes is scenario is populated with NPCs that live up to Kardala, Duck, and Augustus, I hope Justin is a player and not a GM. Justin's also really good at using the logic of the plot and the game rules to come up with entertaining outcomes, like when he made the trade with Garfield for the Flaming Raging Poisoning Sword of Doom. But maybe that would work as a GM, if he can come up with entertaining setbacks and challenges for the players that aren't punishing.

Justin does great characters, and all of them are quite different. Taako is different from Kardala from Duck from Augustus Parsons of the Parsons Cashew Company.

And they are totally going to skip Justin's story. Him and Sydnee did just have another child, he's probably not able to put the time into running a campaign.

Even if they hadn't just had another kid, I doubt Justin would do one. He's never really seemed into the idea of running a campaign, and on the Podcon The The Adventure Zone Zone he basically said he had no story ideas and seemed amazed that anyone has the ability to write fiction.

I liked the end of Dust, curious to see what the announcement on Thursday is too. Also, I don't know if I'm the only one but I still kind of am hoping for much shorter season/arcs whatever in whatever season 2 of TAZ is. Like a 6 months - a year long campaign kind of seems like something I'd be into more than another 3 year long one. Either way, I'll listen most likely .

I think I agree, trying to make a season 2 recapture that lightning-in-a-bottle of Balance puts too much pressure on the performance. The experimental arcs were a good idea to do some low-stakes exploration of different ideas and setups and give some cooling off, but approaching it as a star search that'll support another ~70 episode run kinda sours the mood. At first I thought they were going to make something new entirely rather than expanding out one of the experiments and if anything that might've been the better idea, to avoid that "grass is always greener" effect of wondering if they should've picked one of the others.

Approaching it as "we're just going to start playing another game and we'll see how long we want to keep playing it and people want to keep seeing us play it" might've kept the stakes down. It's how people should probably approach the podcast regardless but their current setup is definitely vulnerable to overthinking it.

I was looking for a quote from Justin regarding season 2, but couldn't seem to find. As far as I remember he pretty much stated that it would be foolhardy to try to recreate what they had. Mostly because of the trust built over time with the audience and the impact the show naturally grew into. With the mini-arcs they created a buffer for the following they gathered, to present something new while also avoiding some unfair criticism if they make something too different. They don't have the advantage of being underdogs anymore.

Finally listened to the Dust finale and man that final confrontation was bizarre. The sheriff just monologued his whole character motivation and backstory, then was killed by an NPC. I could kind of see what Travis was going for but that was some extremely clunky storytelling. Of course he gets the benefit of the doubt that this was a very condensed mini-arc and there wasn’t a lot of time to build character story...but there had to have been a better way of handling it.

It would be weird if they continue this for Griffin’s character because he has these bonuses and backstory connected to Carrion Street but it seems like it’s being heavily implied that future stories won’t take place in the town of Dry River, making that part of his character totally irrelevant. They would probably need to rework that.
