He's a rescue, so no specialty breed manipulation on our part. Very sweet, but energetic dog; he easily has one of the best temperaments of a dog I've ever seen, to the point I'm getting him certified as a therapy dog. Kids love him. We took him to an indoor trunk or treat and he loved all the pets and head scratches.

E: Oh, I think I need to post a pic of a cat, too. Our cat is also a rescue, though we got him when he was a kitten.

If more people were content with mutts, "pure breeds" wouldn't be problem, but lots of people treat dogs as a fashion statement or want a certain breed for aesthetic reasons so the same dogs keep getting inbred and the genetic mutations are almost impossible to get rid of now.

Some friends of ours got a pair of "pure bred" golden retrievers and within a year both of them needed hip surgery to the tune of $6k. They knew going into it that there might be problems, but they had to have that certain breed. I don't get it, go to a shelter a get a mutt that's genetically diverse and you won't have these problems.

It can go both ways, though.

Personally we had a mini dachshund who lived to 18, and my in laws just had to put their German short hair pointer down last week and she was 14. Pure bred doesnt automatically mean health issues, it's a breeder issue usually.

Our other two dogs are both purebred, but both were also rescues and not a super common breed (Treeing Walker Coonhound.)

Also LA is awesome, losers.

The experience I detailed shows the same thing happens with Designer and Modern Recreation breeds. Basically people inbreed to maintain a certain look which is the whole problem. My Pug is a good little guy and was bought by someone as a fashion accessory. Now usually a male Pug weights in between 12-15 lbs. Our one weights in at 30lb so he is not sitting in a little bag to be carried around Boston. So he ended up being neglected and coming to the rescue where we took him in since he had some behavioral issues due to not being socialised or any kind of obedience training done.

I started doing this because I wanted to help those who couldn't help themselves but it has just opened my eyes to how lovely people really can be and a better understanding of my own faults.

I only got 10 years out of my first high-end pure breed lab. I only got 7 years out of my second high-end pure breed lab.

My current dog is a rescue mutt that I hope will just live a stupid-long life. Mutts seem to be unkillable, while pure breeds seem super fragile and prone to weird and bad problems.

At least that's my experience. My stupid mutt:

LA sucks. Michigan in the winter is so loving long and sometimes depressing (it's been sunny for the last week or two straight and it's really loving with me because it's always grey here in the winter, almost makes me thing it's going to be warm outside but nope) so going somewhere warmer during Feb/March/April always feels like removing a weight from you.

Summer here is awesome at least.

If all breeders had health and genetic screening as the top priority (along with temperament for breeds that despite their original use are now primarily sold as pets) then purebred would have the advantage in all instances. This excludes breeds that are just poorly designed. In many cases, the expensive breeders DO that, but people being people, will hunt out the budget breeder and then wonder of wonders, have a bad experience. Or some breeders are shady, and convince buyers that they perform screening, but don't really despite charging the premium price. The kennel clubs don't police or guarantee anything, and as has been pointed out, actively promoted a continuation of unhealthy traits in some breeds. If you do dog breeding the "right" way, in few instances is there any money in it.... It's another expensive hobby.

That being said, by all means adopt a mutt but for crissakes get it spayed/neutered! Hybrid vigor is bullshit and the world doesn't need any more mixed up dogs than what already keep popping out.

Get a hotel on the beach, best of both worlds. Downtown St.Pete is 10 minutes from the beach.

Although staying downtown would be really nice too, it's the best downtown in the area by far.

While I agree spay / neuter is a must and always get a rescue animal.... sorry but hybrid vigor is very much a thing. Thats why most cats and mutts dont tend to have the long list of issues purebred dogs do, their gene pool is more like a gene lake and genetic issues just dont get a chance to loop back in with inbreeding. Plus cats (and sometimes dogs) move in and out of wild populations where genetic issues are either diluted or kittens / pups dont survive to breed and pass it on, let alone have stronger immune systems. Inbreeding that exists in purebreds gently caress immune systems up and that is why hybrid vigor is truly a thing - the wider the potential genetic pool, the less chance a problem is passed on and the more chance a strong immune system is accquired.

Frankly gently caress breeders because all they are doing is creating inbred little monsters that have so many genetic issues it's a wonder they can survive.

He's talking about hybrid vigor, and that's an argument of perspective, really
There are some exceptions, like mules and coywolves, but I feel like aphids are the argument both for and against hybrid vigor
-They reproduce asexually when conditions are favorable and it's early in the season, they have their "perfect" model running and they don't want to risk ruining a good thing
-They reproduce sexually if conditions are poor and it is late in the season, so that the successful aphids that thrived all year breed new, hopefully more successful aphids for next year

Of course, hippies grabbed onto it with their dirty hands and say that everything needs to be a hybrid because every purpose bred organism is weak, because that's not what nature intended :jerkbag:

The part I quoted was something about hybrid vigor and immune systems, not recessive genes.

Dogs aren't the only species that are bred for type. And fortunately so, because our food supply as we know it, depends on that. Dogs aren't special in that regard, but people use all kinds off bullshit terminology based on anecdotal evidence to justify... What exactly because I'm not sure either? What is the end goal, with a call to end all purposeful dog breeding?
