For those in the thread who haven't read it, Teppu didn't just immediately stop dead/get cancelled. like, the author did manage to finish the arc it was on and wrapped it up fairly well iirc.

drat now I wanna reread it, Teppu owned

Because I dislocated my knee and haven't been at work I've been spending time reading random poo poo and I stumbled on Gleipnir and I can't help but like it even though it's pretty trash. Just the concept of dude transforms into mech and girl goes inside him cause he's a pussy and she fights by wearing him is dumb and weird enough to make me interested, and the actual plot is interesting. It's also basically porn though cause girls just love being naked in this series. But the action is good? Overall I'd say it's enjoyable trash.

Gleipnir is pretty much trash. It has some odd good moments and cool panels/pages but it is trash.

Its also misery porn. Like every setup is pretty much so something terrible can happen.

I haven't really seen any misery porn though? Like I thought it was gonna but then it didn't. When the cat girl crawled inside him and she got crushed inside him, they ended up fusing instead of dying then came back to normal. Bokurano or Narutaru are misery porn.

He definitely has a thing for mascots considering I looked up some of his other works and one is about a dude who falls for some girl who turns out to have a troublesome twin sister. The way they meet is they're both wearing mascot outfits at a sporting event.

Probably the only modern fashion thing that I genuinely dislike and flat-out don't understand is skinny jeans. Like, I have a pair, and people even complimented me on them, but I just couldn't deal with it. I just couldn't shake the feeling that I was wearing something completely absurd. There are other fashion things I may not be enthusiastic about or might not prefer, but that's the only one that I just think looks outright bad despite being popular.

The pair the MC puts on in chapter 4 don't look quite as bad as others I've seen, though. I think it's because they don't fit tightly to his lower legs. I feel like even those only work well if you're pretty skinny, though; like I'm 5'10" and 155lb and wouldn't consider myself skinny enough to pull them off in a way that I think looks good.

This is actually addressed in the manga a few chapters later...his friend has big thighs from sports so they go and get different trousers.

Uniqlo skinny jeans aren't quite as tight as a lot out there. My daily jeans are their ultra stretch skinny jeans and they're extremely comfortable despite my short-but-powerful legs. I'd say that slim (rather than skinny jeans) are a pretty good bet for most people, though.

Yeah, I actually kinda like the slim look; it's only when they sorta taper and become more narrow near the bottom (or otherwise cling to someone's legs) that it crosses over into looking bizarre (in my subjective opinion of course).

It's actually good that this topic came up because of that manga, since I've been meaning to buy some new jeans now that I'm back down to 32s; when I was still wearing 34s I was always hesitant to buy any because I felt like it'd just be a waste of money if they were going to just become too big later.

Yeah I'm not a fan of the tapering to a narrow bottom thing because then it makes shoes look disproportionately huge. I also don't like having some of the socks exposed when standing, but when you have longer legs that becomes somewhat unavoidable.

new Stravaganza

As is often the case with Stravaganza, chapter is :nws: for sexy naked ladies. I really love the world of Stravaganza, it's got a pretty unique fantasy setting despite having the typical tropes of orcs, dwarves, giants, beastmen, etc, they're all done in pretty fantastical ways compared to the cliches. In this one, we see Vivian return to take the throne once more, meet back up with comrades, take a loving bath finally, and set up some serious poo poo. I do very much like the designs we are shown at the very end of the chapter.

I really liked these two pages in particular.

I also adore the sisterly love between an eccentric, helmeted queen and a 60-foot-tall titanic brawler who wields two giant meat tenderizers as fist weapons.

edit: jesus, there's only 26 chapters of Stravaganza translated, and it feels like 100 chapters of stuff has happened.

The tribal dudes are cool with me but I'm only one black dude. Cultural depictions of African dudes and their facial features is really complicated and I'm more interested in the character context of the representation than if the visual representation done by a Japanese artist lines up slightly but not entirely with more harmful American historical depictions. Complex thing though. There's black dudes that are better done by Japanese artists but also a lot worse.

Sharkopath
May 27, 2009

In any case I'm happier with good black characters that are coded as black because of their facial features than the generic darker skinned but samefaced blonde/white haired foreigner/fantasy race type that's more common. It's a more real representation to me because of the specificity.

Also these posts are assuming you're just talking about the tail dudes look and not something specific that happened this chapter.

It's racist, but it comes from a more innocent place than old western depictions of black people. It's much more forgivable than a lovely western depiction of black people.

They're basically raising every flag they can between the lips, being straight up called "kurods," basically being monkey people as their gimmick. It's a bad scene.

They ARE just treated as regular dudes so I do agree it's an ignorance, not malice, thing, but it's rouuuuuuugh. Like, Panther from Eyeshield rough.

Panther wasn't bad himself, just how he was framed. As a character he was cool.

Then the magic black people muscles stuff starts getting mentioned.

Sharkopath
May 27, 2009

If there's an incredibly minor thing I could wave a cultural magic wand and change it'd be recontextualizing the western cultural slander of monkeys and gorillas and tied African heritage cause get this: Apes and monkeys rule.

No shame in being called a gorilla and a chimp can RIP you in two. There's a bit of that already in the rap scene but still tons of cultural baggage and stigma whenever the two get associated in the west.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if I should bring it up, there's some real unfortunate poo poo there, most obvious is the lips, that seems to be a relic of an older artist(he's been doing high-end manga art for at least 12 years according to baka-updates) that you generally don't see in newer artist's works depicting black people. That said, there's nothing in their actions that is particularly stereotypical, like as people, right? I may be forgetting something glaring. That said, I completely missed that their name, Kurods, is literally just "blackds", which is bad and also pretty dumb. And while it's probably not necessarily intentional, it sure is unfortunate that the main story hook of the Enshin which turns anyone who ingests it into mindless beasts does that to them. It's not a good look especially when they've become mindlessly violent and animalistic due to the Enshin and have the blank eyes and slavering mouths, despite that happening to anyone who ingests it.

I saw the tail thing and immediately thought "oh that's not good" as well, but again in context of the story it's never treated as "monkey tail people = savages", when oftentimes the racist depictions of black people in reference to monkeys is knuckledragging or giving them neanderthal/simian skull structure. And there's some egyptian stylings going on in some of them too. It's a real mixed bag of accents to them that really confused me on what to think of them, they're never treated as noble savages or anything, their culture and city are just as advanced as Vivian's country or any others depicted so far.

Slime posted:

This is kinda where I ended up on it, none of it came off as necessarily malicious and more of an antiquity of an older artist who could have very easily done some way worse stuff. Not having read Eyeshield 21 I'm unfamiliar with the Panther dude though.
