They just updated Fault Milestone One with the very nice rejiggered art from the still-stuck-in-development-hell Vita port, and it's half off on Steam for the next few days. There's never been a better time to play it.

So the fan disk for code;realize hits the USA market today. Does anyone know when it might be available for download in Europe? I can't find any info on it except spring 2018.

Seems like thread favourite lesbian ghost game Kindred Spirits on the Roof is getting a re-release subtitled Full Chorus. It adds widescreen resolutions, extra CGs, and full voice acting with bonus commentary. Also to be made available as a DLC for existing owners.

Well it's not masterpiece why-haven't-you-all-played-this-yet good but those don't come around that often. I guess the word I'm looking for is 'solid'. There's no caveats or warnings that I need to provide before playing, unless you despise that sort of dramatic magic plot entirely, and that should be obvious to you from the premise.

If it looks like your kind of thing, it's good.

Looks like its going to be 800 x 600, not widescreen.

It's also being ported to Ren'Py, which should fix the lag/freezing problems that some people were having. In addition to Mac/Linux support.

I wonder if MangaGamer got the bonus Drama CD that came with the japanese version?

So choices of actions and alignments is really my thing. Are there any VN's? like that?

I'm kinda regretting getting Bad Apples Wars because I thought you would get more opportunities to side with either the Good Apples or Bad Apples but not so much.... I was thinking of grabbing either Collar x Malice or Period Cube while they're on sale. Someone on Reddit told me Period Cube you can choose either Angels or Demons and it looks fun enough.

The 1st chapter of NIS's Shin Hayarigami was released in English on phones a couple of weeks ago. It's a long running series that's never been translated before, this one was a PS3/Vita game. It's a murder mystery horror thing having to do with urban legends. Apparently this chapter is like 8 hours long, if it does well they say they'll release more. It's $2.99. Also it was rated Z when it came out so it's probably pretty gory. Here's the store links:

Looking for recommendations for a new VN. These are the ones I've finished. Starting to think I've read the best of the lot already

Umineko
Steins Gate
Steins Gate 0
Chaos Child
Ever17
Fata Morgana
Zero Escape series
Dangan Ronmpa Series
Phoenix Wright series

Was thinking Higurashi but from what I understand the Answer arcs aren't finished yet.

Also looking at Root Double and Muv-Luv

Any others I should consider?

PC is awk since the writers didn't put much thought into creating a believable MMO so YMMV.

It's a bit harder to find than these but there's Hideo Kojima's Snatcher I guess. I know people like Policenauts too but I haven't played that yet myself.

I honestly know nothing about otome games myself, but I did notice MG announcing they've picked up Steam Prison (VNDB) a couple of days back which seems like something maybe worth keeping an eye on for people interested in steampunk-flavored anime boyfriends.

Thanks, I appreciate it. It's a good genre and it's a nice change of pace from typical VNs. I support Femc for all games but so it goes.

Aksys localization efforts vary from ok to unfortunate situations but they have access to Otomate games. They will release 3 more games this year over the summer too. Then MG will pick up some indies but their choices are... Odd.

I would start with a title like Code:realize which is adventure + romantic elements over pure romance if that's not your favorite type.

Some people start with mobage but that's one expensive path.

I don't know if it's technically otome since it was written in English, but Confines of the Crown is my favorite anime boyfriend game. The best anime boyfriend in it is Prince Nazagi because one of his endings is a practical and adorable poly triad. Plus the main character owns in her own right, being very competent and actively engaging with the plot, which is refreshing.

Code;Realize is my favourite too. In that one my favourite is Victor.

Unfortunately after that one it's basically "hey I like certain aspects of this otome but oh boy do they have faults" territory.

I liked the Yanagi route of CollarxMallice; I liked Kent from Amnesia (though I had a blast playing some other routes because I was playing with friends and it was so bad it's good). I like everyone in Hakuoki except Kazama (though this is my most wasted potential game, it could have been good but it has so many inconsistencies regarding their own lore and their treatment/opinion of Chizuro).
I managed to get through norn9 so I suppose I also liked it a bit, but I found it more entertaining than investing.

I'm looking forward to the psychadelica games! They have good reviews so I'm crossing my fingers.

Tried CLANNAD yet? It's a classic, although quite long and it takes a while to get to the best parts.

It felt worth it to me, but some might tell you to save yourself the time and watch the anime instead, which I haven't seen.

Since the beginning of Higurashi is pretty slow. If just watched the first couple episodes of the anime and then jumped into the visual novel how much would that detract from the experience?

not that much. unlike umineko, where every early scene builds towards a purpose, a lot of early higurashi is skippable without missing any plot points.

Early Higurashi, like maybe the first and second arcs, you're probably fine because most of the details lost can be inferred and there is a decent amount of fluff. I'm not sure I would watch the anime for say arc 3 and especially not for any of the Kai/Answer arcs though.

It's sad that Higurashi starts so weakly, because people say such great things, but I dropped it after Chapter 1. The anime does away with so much repetition and unnecessary cruft and is a much more enjoyable experience.

On the other hand, Umineko is fantastic even after watching the anime. It's simply a tighter, solidly crafted experience.

Ouch, was the consensus on the anime that bad? Hmm, 7.28 on MAL: https://myanimelist.net/anime/4896/Umineko_no_Naku_Koro_ni

I don't remember since it came out in 2009, but I'm pretty sure I enjoyed it and searched around for the VN translation back then, to no avail.

But yeah, I'd usually never go from first playing VN to watching its anime, since that is just a bad idea. Learned the hard way with Fate/Stay night.

Nate RFB

Umineko's anime is infamously trashy, the way it presents the mystery is a mess because it's a complete crapshoot whether they skip over stuff that actually matters for solving the case or was fluff; and unlike Higurashi, Umineko does a far more consistent job of making the fluff far more interesting/entertaining or otherwise useful for developing characters. They also managed to drop the ball on the soundtrack which is especially damning given the source material they had to work with.

Also I really wouldn't give Higurashi's anime that much credit; it arguably helps with the earlier arcs because Ryukishi07 really had not figured out pacing yet but the later arcs take Rena's hatchet to cutting content/atmosphere. Meakashi and Tsumihoroboshi might as well be two completely different stories VN vs. anime.
