Yeah I'm kind of assuming that Underworld Penny is tweaking out on ambrosia cupcakes or whatever which is why they can't connect with him. Then they'll find him somewhere along the line and he'll not recognize them or something.

So yeah, new Penny is there to hold his place and create some new drama for Kady and Julia. But with the season almost over its probably all theoretical at this stage.

Unrelated, but how far in advance do they make the episodes? Because when Penny23 is checking the news on the laptop and says our timeline is worse than his, the headline on the screen says "White House Rolls Back Regulations After Mass Shooting."

I don't think Douglas Adams is the only person to ever come up with the idea of a thing at the end of the world/universe before.

I mean, Magicians is obviously heavily referential to other stuff but "___ at the end of the universe" isn't really an unexplored idea.

Finally watched the latest episode. The very first song in the show, the one that gets cut short... I really wish there was a long version of it. There's something about it that's hooked me hard and it'd make an amazing song on the level of Justice tracks.

Also this show is still loving amazing. How are they pulling this poo poo off? I genuinely felt happy for everyone who got everything and genuinely felt sad for those who lost things. Yeah, even Tick. I'll never figure out how they got me so freakin' invested.

I assumed the reason "the restaurant at the end of the universe" is a joke is because it's just a restaurant and not something grand but I'm not really big on literature so gently caress if I know how original "at the end of the universe" was prior to Hitchhiker's Guide.

Not making Quentin the main char after season 1. Masterstroke. It's like the bizzaro version of Urkel on Family Matters, JJ on Good Times, or Chum Lee on Pawn Stars. It was such a good choice it even made Quentin cool.

Is there really any reason for why they have to bring back magic? The fairy conflict is resolved and by using the keys they risk releasing some kind of monster into the world (which they absolutely will because they are all idiots and the season finale needs a cliffhanger). Is it really worth it to do some party tricks?

They did mention some stuff about the normal world falling apart and it's entirely possible they even had Penny mention "we had the apocalypse and your world is more messed up" as a way of saying that it's happening because magic failed. It's not Mr Robot levels of messed up, though, so it definitely just feels like bringing back magic is more for selfish reasons than anything else.

STAC Goat

I think the "your world is more messed up" was just a cute bit of political/social commentary. He wasn't commenting on some kind of shocking political unrest. It was a mass shooting.

There's an argument to be made for the need for magic in like Fillory where they were completely dependent on it and everything is going to poo poo without it. I don't think that's happening on Earth. There's certainly individuals and companies that are falling apart because they were dependent on magic like that fairy family or Alice's parents. But we've been shown nothing to suggest that that's as wide spread and systematically problematic as Fillory's problems.

There's also probably an argument you could make that since supernatural creatures still have magic than humans need it to protect themselves. The alternate Earth where The Beast murders everyone is a pretty good case of that (although the Beast apparently murders everyone in EVERY timeline expect this one so that undercuts it a bit).

But its pretty clear that at the core of it they're doing this for selfish reasons and because they feel they personally "need" magic the same way they felt they needed it before it was gone. That's been the most consistent theme of the show.

So far the magical creatures has only attacked when provoked. Even the Beast didn't show up until they started messing around with that forbidden ritual.

But he wasn't provoked, was he? My memory of it isn't great but wasn't the "forbidden spell" just what opened the door that let the Beast in? And he responded to them poking their heads around other dimensions by coming to slaughter them. Plus he had been in Penny's head for years trying to get him and all the travelers to kill themselves so they couldn't gently caress with him. And of course he was murdering them in every timeline.

The Beast was a bad guy. At best you could argue that if the Earth kids didn't have magic they would have been off his radar and non-threats, but the Beast was kind of shown to be a psychopath and didn't Quentin Beast say he was just killing people for fun?

Margot and Eliot promised the Lorians and the Stone Mountain Clan that they'd return magic and train their peoples in its arts in exchange for the other two countries not invading Fillory.

That, and a lot of magicians in our world who rely on magic, and there's a risk to the continued existence of fairy kind should magic not return to the world.

Plus the Underworld is hosed over by the loss of magic (somehow), there are people stuck in the Neitherlands because of the sudden failure of magic, and returning magic to the world would help to break the Library's monopoly over power and knowledge.

I agree that that are practical reasons it's needed, but it still seems clear to me that at its core they need it back because they've all experienced having the wild power to do whatever the hell they want and they need that thrill again.

I also really liked the Penny looking at the laptop moment, and it occurred to me that they could have very easily just shot that with a green screen monitor and CGI'd in whatever news text they wanted. With how good the tech is now and text on a screen probably being about the easiest thing to pop in convincingly, I'm game for shows to use that trick more often. Not all the time because then it'd get annoying, but sprinkle it in and have some fun with it, why not.

Off the top of my head a show like Law and Order SVU could use it to do a "ripped from the headlines" reference that's not meaty enough to be its own episode but is a timely reference. To again go to the mass shooting example, sad though it is, they could have an episode dealing with that in the can for months and then have the latest shooting up on a monitor while the dialogue references ones that are a few months old.

I dunno, it's not the kind of thing you can do more than once or twice, and it's hard to find a particularly good reason to do it, but I think there's some untapped potential to make that gimmick really cool and well used for the right show in the right situation.

At the start of the season sure but they've all grown somewhat since then.

Margot and Eliot just want to help their kingdom, they could have bailed way earlier and not made a deal with their biggest enemy but they stuck around and dealt peacefully with the fairies.

Julia levels up from helping people and seems fine with just doing that, she doesn't need magic back and is only doing the quest to help her friends.

Quentin got over the guilt that bringing back magic may kill his dad, so he's not doing it for selfish reasons.

Kady/Penny want to use magic to get back together.
