I played in a tournament today despite leaving my entire army at home by mistake. Played 3 rounds with a mishmash of proxies from other people’s collections, nothing was as it seemed.

Newer ones are much better to assemble, CB really see, to have learned a lot.

Hsien/Crane Haris? Cranes can spearhead a link of Celestial Guard, which is pretty good, Hsien can Haris with Zhanying Agents, which is also good. Probably neither option is quite as cut-throat as Su-Jian backed up by a cheap link of Kuang Shi + 1 Celestial Guard. However I think that latter option is often backed up by a single Hsien for MSV2+smoke shenanigans.

Please see below for a summary of my tournament games today. All become hilarious when you imagine I was using random N2 Acontecimento models for most purposes, with the occasional TAG lending its 55mm base to represent a S4 REM!

- Game 1. Transmission Matrix. Facing Steel Phalanx. 7-5 Victory, 120 points remaining to opponent’s 70-ish(?). Opponent a nice guy, seemed to know what he was doing. I lost the roll and he picked deployment, but I chose to go second anyway. Possibly a mistake or I didn’t use 2nd turn advantage well enough. I felt I sort of threw away a bigger win here. Placed my Designated Target badly again (still thinking of it like an HVT) and despite some excellent rolls wasting a couple of his orders, he promptly bagged it with his Datatracker – not really preventable when deploying and going second. However I mucked up the counterattack a bit; despite shattering his army and putting him into LoL (which I didn’t realise) I risked my Lt Intruder against a chain rifle purely out of greed for the 1 extra point, and failed the ARM roll. Absolutely should have left it, and that would have let me keep a grip of the game and try for a 9-4 major win. Instead, we both had a poor second turn and drew there as well. I was not really in doubt of the final win, but much closer than it would have been if I’d played better.

- Game 2. Looting & Sabotaging. Facing Merovingians. 7-2 Defeat, 174 points remaining to opponent’s 104. So my oppo, who's an experienced tourney player, had a great strategy for this game – he rolled to infiltrate 8 separate camouflage markers within a single move of my objective, which has to be protected from anti-materiel cc attacks. All of the camouflaged models had D-charges. So 4 of them made their rolls, 2 coordinated a move+CC in the first order of the game. I wiped out the whole lot with AROs immediately, having counter-deployed, but in that one order he hit with both in CC (inc one crit), destroying my objective instantly. Gives me a hard cap of 7 OPs for the game, and he had 4 OPs in the bag instantly! I can’t really complain, it’s a clever way to play the mission rules, but it’s a pretty frustrating way to lose! Some good play over the rest, I decimated his army and sent the Iguana/McMurrough up toward his objective. The main obstacle to this was Saito Togan. This got a bit weird: I overstretched my Iguana in Round 1, got one swing at the objective, missed, and was killed in his Turn 2. In my Turn 2, I didn’t have enough orders to get anyone else there, so we ended and packed up. Throughout this, we both thought it was one turn later than it actually was. We completely forgot the Round 3. Kicking myself obviously, if I had played more conservatively in Round 1 & 2 I might well have been able to swing a draw or low scoring win. A real regret of a game. Not to slag off the other guy though, he really embraced the spirit of the tourney, taking some useful Merc troops etc - wish I had done the same.

- Game 3. Biotechvore. Facing Hassassin Bahram. 9-0 Victory, 281 points remaining to opponent’s 0. Played Alex before, he’s a sportsman but not a very competitive player. He elected to deploy second, so I went first. Took down a couple of Asawira in a Haris link, a TR bot, and Yojimbo while moving most of my models out of the zone, including a dominant Mobile Brigada pain train, a TR bot and the requisite Crazy Koala carriers. Lost 2 jaguars, 1 Stempler Zond and 1 Transductor Zond (45pts) to the virus. He really struggled to break out, bagging my TR bot and 1 Moran but struggling to do more than survive, losing 1 or 2 more blokes in the process. I finished off everything but some Muyibs and 1 Barid in my Turn 2. He risked one piece, the Muyib HRL, in his turn and lost it against my MB link (missiles hitting on 19s). My Turn 3 I accomplished my classifieds. I then used a Moran Masai boarding shotgun, was quite lucky and downed his Barid and 2 remaining Muyibs, clearing him off the board.

Yeah, you need a 5-man wu ming link fuelled by kuang shi, then 75pts of specialist fuelled by another set of kuang shi. 20 orders and a pain train, baby.

Well, it's a weird one. Personally I think it's a good laugh but bears little resemblance to any more conventional mission.

I almost always over-reach my orders in some way. I think it's the mark of a really superior player not to - they go for what they can get and don't expose their models to an easy counter-attack unless they absolutely need to.

Yeah, it is the main idea - have a strike team (Hsien Haris or Su-Jian) fueled by a Kuang Shi battery in one group, specialists and back-up srikers in the other.

While Hsien HMG in a haris might be a no-brainer choice for those sweet 5 dice, it will be difficult to utilize after you get rid of TR bots if you play on tables with appropriate amount of terrain. Multi-rifle will let you use your haris buddies more and will be more effective against camospam.

In button-pushing missions always have a CG with smoke launcher in a core link - covering whole field in smoke so your Sophotect or Kanren can effortlessly swoosh around is incredibly effective once you get rid of enemy MSV2.

Sharing across from the Backdoor Challenge page.

The Combined Army prevails as the winning faction of the first Challenge ITS.

The following characters cannot be used in Army Lists for ITS Leagues or Tournaments until further notice. Outside official ITS games, these characters can be used normally.

PanOceanía: Lieutenant Stephen Rao, Bagh Mari Unit
Yu Jing: Guǐ Fēng Xi Zhuang
Ariadna: Col. Yevgueni Voronin.
Haqqislam: Tarik Mansuri
Nomads: Reverend Superior Cassandra Kusanagi
ALEPH: Andromeda

Leirbag is the player holding the first position of the World Ranking of the ITS after finishing Challenge 01: Crisis B4CKD00R, so he is awarded with the honorary title of Winter Winner.

Leribag has selected the Combined Army to be the faction with access to the Improved Profile HVT (Improved Designated Target) in the scenarios including the Designated Target Special Rule, using the following profile.

Don't get me wrong, this whole thing is brain dead in the extreme. I'm just salty because I've been crit to death an awful lot.

I wonder what the turnaround time is on a single mini for CB. Having a limited edition mini for the winning faction, like an alt character sculpt, available until the Interplanetario would be a way better reward and wouldn't actively screw so much of your player base.

Yeah a few places do in the UK. I always do ITS with reported lists for reference. The only thing players don't get when they don't report lists is the season achievements.

It's worth mentioning this is only for a couple of months as well.

Seconding everyone’s opinion that this is some bullshit. What on Earth were they thinking? People don’t like having their toys taken away from them, some small bonus to the winning faction (which is already there in suitably minor form as the improved hvt) would have been enough.

Apparently these lost characters are supposed to come back "better"?

The loss of Rao is no big deal. He could use something to set him apart from the rest of the Bagh Mari.

Xi is a pretty big loss. I was under the impression that people used him regularly and I'm not sure how he could be improved. He's pretty optimized as is.

Does anyone use Voronin at all? With Kazaks coming now is a good time for a revamp.

They just changed Tarik. Also death to the Fatality skill.

Kusanagi is outdated and in desperate need of an update. I get she's supposed to be the Nomad's Joan but she's too expensive in a Moira link and isn't that great on her own.
