The logical conclusion is to use "they" for every character, so you don't have to put in extra dialog that changes depending on the gender of the characters. Think of how much time that will save the developers that they can devote to making extra levels or abilities. (I guarantee it's only in the game because someone was stuck on something else and as a distraction tried to see how hard it would be to implement a third gender option, realized it wouldn't be hard at all,and suggested it be in the game).
