It feels like ~50% of AAA games made are Japanese, so, statistically speaking, ~50% of the ones I like should be from Japan all else being equal. Anime is cute though so in the end it's more like 60% for me

i hate seeing entire chunks of the japanese industry get lumped in as otaku bait cause most of the big franchises people point to are also pretty popular with women and the ones that really are almost purely male otaku-oriented are really niche and consist entirely of megacheap budget titles

The point one of the commentators made about Japanese games being less corporate-driven and more single vision-driven feels right (like, I can't imagine an American Yoko Taro being successful in a large company--he'd be fine as an indie dev though) but it could be confirmation bias.

Mind you, the industry is only driven by auteur creators when the companies find ways to capitalize on them. Taro caught lightning in a bottle with Automata and instantly became marketable for Square-Enix so he's in a good place, but previously he was struggling like many visionary directors in Japan.

There also seem to be more companies of a size in between big AAA publishers and handful of people indie dev teams which it feels like western games have polarized into due to buyouts.

Western games in Japan have an extremely weird presence in Japan, a lot of them get shuffled into the literal forbidden zone since they wind up with a CERO Z rating a lot of the time (equivalent to AO with the ESRB, buying a game with this rating in a store mandates ID as a federal law, and online purchases can only be made with a credit card, no wallet cards, which is tricky in Japan due to being notoriously cash-centric) due to excess blood and/or because you can harm innocents consequence-free (even Retro City Rampage wasn't spared this). Even the ones that avoid this can get weird. It's kind of surreal that they promote MLB The Show quite a bit over there, but the game remains in English only. In the pre-Steam days, PC game availability was also weird as all hell, I had a fun time with the Ultima I-VIII anthology, which mostly consisted of floppy disk image files and an emulator for the NEC PC-98. Ultima VII and VIII you needed a legit DOS machine for, though, with 7 just being the English version (need the Super Famicom version for Japanese) and VIII only working in DOS/V and I couldn't get it working in DOSBox. I was at a localization panel at PAX years ago and one of them had a story. They were working on some game that had simultaneous localization and repeated content--some sort of MMO variant I think. At some point there was a bit of content that was only going to be released in NA for some reason. Apparently the Japanese writers had felt stifled by the Japanese ratings board, and decided to stick all the horribly violent poo poo they had wanted to put in into this content. The localizers had to inform them that no, the ESRB was not okay with children being decapitated on screen in a T rated game.

my favorite mid 80s japanese pc gaming story will forever be the time richard gariott flew over to discuss giving falcom the japanese publishing rights to ultima, getting shown a demo of falcom's own ultima-inspired dungeon crawler xanadu, and then immediately storming out when he saw one of the shopkeepers in the game just had their art blatantly lifted from the ultima 3 manual and it all getting written down in an entry in The Official Book of Ultima that talked about japan as a country dominated by unoriginal ultima rip-offs like dragon quest and falcom never released a version of xanadu with the old shopkeeper artwork ever again

If you're somewhere that handles DVD's or PC games in any capacity, they have an adult section, and odds are good some of what's in there is flat-out illegal in much of the rest of the world. The covers I've seen  At least Geo had like a million copies of 24 DVD's, 2 episodes for one night for only 150 yen!

i forgot about the full extent to which falcom got owned  it's epic because at this point falcom was like, just starting to become an actual company and a lot of their games after xanadu had really striking visuals and design work, it's just xanadu was like their second big game right after they finally found something that made them major bank, which just happened to be inventing the basic modern conventions of the action rpg genre lol
