Not that there aren't likely huge ethical problems in the production of that and stuff that would be incredibly illegal elsewhere, but it's kind of an odd thing to find weird about Japan specifically when people have literally instant access to free porn at any time and that's become normalized in at least the US to the point that it's just joked about.

Well yeah but I mean in like. Being sold in bookstores and stuff. It's just odd because I don't see it myself where I live! I got used to it quickly because who cares.

Yeah there's a lot of cultural norms, both sexual and otherwise, that feel obvious and normal until you suddenly learn that it's just how the part of the world you're in behaves during this particular period of history. In particular, exactly how hidden sex should be varies an absolute fuckton, and what things count as sexual does too.

It seems to vary from shop to shop. My local is happy to put big boobie mags right next to the sweets.

Almost certainly, remember there are a lot of old pervs who don't understand how the internet works and are crazy-reliable when it comes to buying those as they're released. Speaking of Japan's weird ways of doing things, I'd wager there are still adult VHS releases there for similar reasons.

i forgot about the full extent to which falcom got owned

it's epic because at this point falcom was like, just starting to become an actual company and a lot of their games after xanadu had really striking visuals and design work, it's just xanadu was like their second big game right after they finally found something that made them major bank, which just happened to be inventing the basic modern conventions of the action rpg genre lol

Looking through Google images, it appears that the Hardcore Gaming 101 article on Xanadu has a bunch of examples of the Ultima III manual art and the digitized version that was used in Xanadu. It's pretty damning, and wild that Falcom didn't see a problem with it until they invited the owner of the company they were infringing on in for a demo.

it's not that crazy when you consider that falcom started off kinda similarly to enix and square, so tiny they were barely like, a company, their earliest stuff is all weird text adventures until dragon slayer turned out to be a hit. so like enix, they've kind of got a weird past that they absolutely buried the moment they hit even bigger acclaim with ys because while dragon slayer put them on the map, ys is what made them one of the most important companies in the market

it's funny to consider that too, because the end of the 90s really saw them shrinking down. it's kind of a wonder that they're finding the most success they've had in years now

Yeah I was real surprised to see there wasn't a proper release since I went on a bit of a spending splurge a week or so ago, and could only find the Gunbuster vs. Diebuster movie.

Phil Fish was a good game creator that said stupid things and gamers got mad but like to a stupid degree like they tend to and eventually he got sick of being told to kill himself every time he posted anything, so he dropped out of making games and posting online and then people got mad at him for that.

Nioh. I keep meaning to take a break from it but I keep not doing that.

I'll probably at least take a break when Dad of War comes out if I haven't beaten it by then.

I was going through games I've downloaded over the years and usually deleting them after playing for a bit to see if I care about playing them completely since I'm not set on playing anything at the moment. That got stalled for a bit after spending a bit too much time on Slime Rancher for whatever reason.

Maybe Prey or Radiant Historia?
