If we could find a way to tip the scales from having to "work to live" to "working if you want to" even a little that would be a good thing IMO.

Some weeks with overtime and other things it feels like I barely get any time with my daughter and that is not good OP

The irony is that if you provide those resources to everyone, there won’t be the workforce to maintain or provide the food, housing and clothing for everyone in the world.

Maybe in another 20 years when robots become more sophisticated and can manage these tasks with no human interaction.

Don't all the current, real-world examples of UBI have people working whilst receiving it and shock, everyone still works normally?

No, all their societies stopped because everyone is a hedonist and finds no greater pleasure in life than buying whitegoods, jacking off and playing videogames

if you boil consumerism down to 'people acquiring stuff not because they need it but because they want it' then yes, consumerism would absolutely exist, even in a situation where notionally everything belongs to the state (hint: there's always private property because humans are humans and my pile of rocks needs to be bigger than your pile of rocks)

ding ding ding ding! correct answer. people will always want to have things that they don;'t need because we're not robots and it makes us happy. the problem comes from the imbalance of power between consumer and producer, there's no inherent bad in consumerism (hope that puts a wrinkle in your brain amy)

Oh absolutely. I'd keep my job if UBI were a thing since I'm not exactly working in the salt mines here. It may enable me to take more leave without pay since with a young and growing family all my leave gets taken up already.

This was my initial thoughts too. There is probably nothing really stopping me trying to negotiate it even now, but having a UBI as guaranteed income would be nice padding.

I know very little about UBI but wouldn’t CPI go up and everyone’s buying power stay relatively the same?

Also your average joe would probably just take on more housing debt with that extra money so it wouldn’t be spent productively.

UBI would allow me to not worry about making rent every single time I have complications related to my MS and meds come up, and maybe even let me buy such extravagences as a mattress from this century that isn't full of holes or be able to afford regular servicing for my car.

Seriously I'm at a point where I don't think I'll ever have any sort of advance or upgrade to my life without UBI becoming a thing, especially since brain/spine damage disorder doesn't even put you remotely close to getting on disability in this country anymore.

It's a sensible question to ask.

One trial in Mexico suggests that the effects would be measurable but not dramatic, and similar results were seen in Kuwait and Alaska.
