We aren't talking about basic welfare. We are talking about universal basic income. It's cool how i keep needing to explain the basic premise of the discussion so that idiots in the peanut gallery can pretend to keep up.

Do I need to post a loving wikipedia link for you?

The dumbass above SPECIFICALLY talked about the cost of medicine. UBI is not an adequate solution to this, UHC is.

I did not specifically talk about the cost of my medicine ever. I specified my illness costs me work hours and I can't even afford basic loving comforts like a goddamn mattress even with trying to save up on good weeks. How are you not getting this? Unless you're suggesting that all diseases and disorders need to be 100% cured before we're allowed to have UBI or something stupid.

You're a bit of a fountain pen today mate hey

Someone who is too sick to work is not reimbursed for their lost labor under uhc. They may get medicine and that may fix the problem but for the period of time they were sick they do not earn an income.

Obviously i believe in the need for a rational welfare system, i'm just not sure that an unconditional payment for every citizen regardless of employement or other circimstance is what that system looks like. ESPECIALLY if it's being sold as a way to maintain a socialy stagnant and ecologically destructive lifestyle for all.

No he didn't. Complications can relate to anything and the subtext in this post is clearly relating to being able to do paid hours. You can't do paid hours if your body is broken or you need to drug yourself up extremely hard.

meteor9 posted:

UBI would allow me to not worry about making rent every single time I have complications related to my MS and meds come up, and maybe even let me buy such extravagences as a mattress from this century that isn't full of holes or be able to afford regular servicing for my car.

Seriously I'm at a point where I don't think I'll ever have any sort of advance or upgrade to my life without UBI becoming a thing, especially since brain/spine damage disorder doesn't even put you remotely close to getting on disability in this country anymore.

And sorry, I should've said MrsMG hasn't been in paid employment for years, of course she works.

That's just it though, "paid employment" is still dancing around the social construct of domestic labour as an "invalid" occupation. UBI isn't the only solution but it's a massive starting point to re framing the idea of 'work' from 'a lovely thing I do because I have to pay bills' to myriad contributions to social betterment.

Maybe you're raising the next generation, maybe you're gardening and making the street look a little bit more fabulous, maybe you're just improving the vibe by staying home instead of dragging your misanthropic arse around town.

edit: Oh yeah, and for periods of illness temporary, or permanent medical or other disability. I know a woman who worked through her cancer treatments in a loving lovely call centre because she was out of all leave entitlements and couldn't afford not to be making money.

Something I've been thinking about heaps is the value of labour. Like everyone thinks of UBI and thinks all this work won't get done because we've got enough people for the jobs as it is, but so many jobs only exist because labour is extremely cheap compared to the alternatives. UBI would reprice labour to what people feel their time is actually worth and as such you would see a lot less jobs "needing" to be done as automation that is already within reach becomes the cheaper option.

You don't build the utopia then people stop working, people need to stop working to make the utopia economically viable.

There is a lot of labour that simply isn't being performed because the economic incentives aren't there. Disability support is an obvious example. Understaffed facilities, people living in deprivation. We could build economic structures to fix this. Perhaps UBI could be a part of those structures but it isn't a panacea.
