If someone does bring up the "unions defend incompetent people who deserve to be fired!" thing you can go back to the whole lawyer analogy - sure they may deserve to be fired but they also deserve to be treated fairly, and to do that someone needs to go to bat for them and be their advocate. We provide lawyers to people who can't afford them not because we want criminals to avoid being punished, but because otherwise trials would be totally and completely unfair. Shouldn't that same standard apply to something as life-changing as losing your job?

Talking from the employer POV, if a boss can’t get someone incompetent fired, either they’re just as incompetent or the employee wasn’t that bad to begin with.
