The real test for the United States and NATO will be, "is Turkey so indispensable that we'll ignore an ethnic cleansing of Northern Syria?" The answer is yes. We're ignoring the fact that Saudis are causing a famine and cholera outbreak in Yemen with our help, and we're gonna ignore it when Turkey ethnically cleanses Kurds with German & American weapons too.

Wonder how susceptible Erdogan is to pressure. You'd have to apply a really light /sneaky touch, anything public and he's basically forced to double down. Hypernationalism is one hell of a drug. Are Iraq and the SAA unlikely to try to respond militarily?

There's still oil in the Kurdish regions of Syria and Iraq, so they'd be crazy not to. Although you can't completely rule out war fatigue either. The Iraqi government is allied to the United States, but they're also not a member of NATO so we'd probably still side with Turkey. If you wonder how susceptible Erdogan is to pressure, I think the fact of the matter is that he's not susceptible to any kind of pressure. Turkey is indispensable. If he wanted to he could leave NATO and make a deal with Russia which they'd gladly take, because having naval bases in Turkish Cyprus and guaranteed passage through the Black Sea is too good to pass up. They wouldn't even need the Syrians anymore if Turkey came to them.

Russia is in a weird place there though, because they have strong relations to Greece and Greek Cyprus, the latter is a mega major offshore banking site (and home away from home) for lots of Russians. Going full monty with Turkey would uh.... disrupt that something fierce. Then again in my experience Greek Cypriots are super susceptible to Russia propaganda media, so maybe they would just spin it lol.

if there are two defining characteristics of the historiography of this conflict its that 1. there is unusually little media presence on the ground and unusually a lot of 1st person accounts 2. every single thing online needs to be read through the filter of "who wrote this and who is this for" like, even more than usual, because there's always an agenda.
