the libs are gonna introduce a punitive tax on fuel and use the proceeds to build the pipeline themselves. win/win

Why? Our own woke bae prime minister has just said that come hell or high water that pipeline's getting built. Sounds like the Alberta oil economy is going to get a helping hand, even if our socially conscious progressive government has to step on the neck of anyone opposed to it.

RE: Winners and losers of HSR in Ontario, the analysis is almost a year old, but it makes some good points. The upshot being, HSR while shiny and new and expensive, will have fairly limited impact on southern Ontario outside of a few specific cities. Overall, money could be much better spent improving existing rail infrastructure and expanding the GO rail and bus networks to improve inter-city/town connections in the region. It would cost significantly less and immediately improve access and viability for commuter transit.

Of course, if you rightly believe Toronto is the only place worth being in Ontario, then at least HSR promises to get you there as quickly as possible, assuming you start in London or Waterloo.

Speaking as someone who has to deal with railcar deliveries of tank cars you are living in a fantasy world.
The demand for rail transport is rammed to the gills. The USA threw us a big gently caress you when they introduced mandatory electronic logging systems on transport trucks. The effect is after 10-12 hours of being on duty the truck automatically shuts down.

It used to be that the truckers had a legal log book and a hidden log book where theyd exclude the times they spent waiting for loads or waiting to get dispatched. Essentially a lot of US truckers won’t even go to Canada and what takes a week to arrive from Illinois now takes longer. With trucking even less favourable we’re trying to get as much intermodal and tank car business as we can.

Alternately, I guess now Alberta is offering to invest in the pipeline for Kinder-Morgan, which some people on Twitter are aghast at because that would be GOVERNMENT OWNERSHIP, so I guess they'll have to just buy KM their pipeline and let KM keep it for free.
previously the justification was they need companies like Kinder Morgan to invest in dirty energy projects, so the tax revenue could be reinvested in clean energy

now they're going to invest the money they have now in dirty energy, and that's it! :waycool:

That's true, but I'm not sure how that's "the point" though. They do own almost all the rail and we either have to build our own for transit or negotiate special access agreements to theirs. They're not going to give Metrolinx and VIA priority right of way to the detriment of their own profitable rail freight traffic. It wouldn't matter if they were still a Crown corp or not.

I guess I think that they shouldn't be have that option, and should be forced to give way to Via/Metrolinx/West Coast Express/RTM/etc.
