I read part of the manga a few years ago as an edgy teenager. Literally nothing but misery porn. You think Mahou Shoujo Raising Project was bad? That show had themes and character arcs; the edgy bullshit got in the way, but there was something for it to get in the way of. (It also understood that you can't just go full choo-choo misery train all the time—you have to have happiness and downtime to balance out sadness and intensity. Mahou Shoujo Site does not understand this.)

Mahou Shoujo Site will make you depressed and miserable. You will not find anything of value in it. You will not enjoy it. It's the Worm of manga, except somehow even worse.

:frogsiren: :frogsiren: :frogsiren: DO NOT WATCH MAHOU SHOUJO SITE :frogsiren: :frogsiren: :frogsiren:

I'd like to defend Worm here, but I can see why you made the comparison. (It feels like MSS took the bullying aspect of early Worm and removed all touches of realism from it, leaving only misery porn.)

the bullying scenes are directly out of the playbook of japanese bullying media, so realism (for the non magical girl parts of course) isn't really the issue rather than execution

Yeah. Like I said, the issue is balance—there are literally no positive factors in the main character's life. She is never happy or victorious for any length of time. It's beyond absurd.

Yeah!

I'm really happy with Hinamatsuri's production quality, and while the pace is fairly brisk I think that it works well and keeps the jokes snappy. I can't wait for the other character arcs because the "side" characters are really what carry the manga after the first few chapters.

The new Cutie Honey was a bit underwhelming; it felt like the earlier shows, but it felt like it was missing the "fun" for lack of a better word. I wasn't expecting full Re:Cutie Honey levels of gags, but it seems to be taking itself way too seriously. Also the music from the kickass PV isn't in it yet, and I want that song.

Hinamatsuri is good. I remember goons liking the manga and never got around to it, then saw it was getting a show and just waited for that.

And I can't believe I'm saying this but... the new Sword Art Online is good? Between the Princess Principal studio and Kino's Journey author I was really hoping that it was just going to be gun game porn planted in that universe, and if they can keep the death game stuff out I am all in for the Pintsize Pink P90 wrecking squad.

Lupin vs Bitcoin is keeping my attention more than the last season did, which I think I dropped midway through from lack of interest.

I have also never watched LotGH, and am starting with Die Neue These. Probably not the best idea, but the first episode seemed fine. I'll see if I can slog through the original after this season is done to compare.

I liked the first episode of Caligiula more than Persona 5 Animation just because I felt like you didn't need to play the game (which I haven't) to enjoy it whereas Persona 5 really wanted you to play the game to enjoy it.

Persona 5 has the advantage of being based off a popular game/franchise, so they can kind of get away with more of the "you probably played the game, so…" stuff.

So horse anime is actually pretty entertaining. I'm guessing it's based off some kind of Kancolle like game but with races horses? Because the setting and premise sure felt like something out of a social game.

Yeah the anime's like Kemono Friends or any number of other anime that are partially made to promote a mobage.

I wouldn't call Grancrest Senki trashy so much as a genre show that doesn't apologize for its genre's stupidity, but it is very good/fun and is continuing. Also it is quite trashy.

Mahou Shoujo Site looks like it's going to be toned down from the manga, which is funny because now it has nothing. The manga was literally nothing but ludicrous, trashy violence. The plot, the characters, everything was only there to set up the trashy violence. Clearly nobody who dislikes that sort of thing is going to change their mind now that there's less of it. Now it's just an anime for nobody, taking up space that could have been used for a better show.

It's like a TV edit of a giallo movie. Not even one of a good one, either. Like, imagine a TV edit of Zombi 3.

Bailing that, I'm happy that Nobunaga no Shinobi is back, but I'm not looking forward to seeing Adorable Anime Nobunaga die.

Being a traditional fantasy that isn't isekai is worth a few points in my book. Those are pretty rare nowadays.

Some of those points are removed, or rather left behind by the faster than light pacing.

Darling in the Franxx is good and started out seeming Extremely Trashy, but that's steadily toned down as its gone on.

The last episode did some really neat re-contextualization of the relationship between the leads.

So horse anime/Umamusume passed the 3 episode test with flying colors for me.

For those of you on the fence because of it's weird and somewhat awkward premise, it's actually a really fun show. Turns out it's actually just a cute girls™ doing track and field anime...except they're personified historical race horses and when they win they do idol performances (I lol'd when they abruptly showcased this in the first episode).

tl;dr: Horse anime is actually: Track and Field Equinem@ster/UMA LIVE!

Stuff I've watched so far:

Horse Girls: Seems like a pretty standard sports/CGDCT show (with an inexplicable dash of idols), if you ignore the horse premise. Pretty decent so far.
Comic Girls: Generic Kirara 4-koma show. Don't care much for the main character, but the blue-haired chuuni is okay. Will probably keep watching.
Gun Gale: Turns out SAO is much better without the lovely MC and the edgy "you die in the game you die in real life" plot. Looking forward to more.
MHA: It's more MHA. Starting with a summary episode felt strange, it hasn't been that long since season 2 ended. New OP is the worst one so far.
Hinamatsuri: It's great.

Still want to check out Hisone to Maso-tan, Wotaku, and maybe Caligula. I did have Mahou Shoujo Site marked as a "maybe", but after reading the thread, I think I'll pass.

Horse Girls episode 3: Idol outfits are not proper running gear. The story is hitting all the familiar beats so far, and I doubt this show will ever stray far from the obvious formula. I did like tall horse girl's training regimen, and the running (haha) "muri" joke.

Caligula episode 1: Weird, but in a good way, maybe? I'm not completely sure about the art style and the general wordiness, but the first episode did have a couple of really good scenes, and I think they nailed the dreamlike feeling. It just might turn to poo poo once they start revealing more of the plot though, so I'm proceeding with caution. Also, I'm glad that one of the Love Lives managed to get a solo career.

Been giving Cutie Honey the benefit of the doubt, but I kind of agree with the people describing it as joyless and dull. The only thing about it that really caught me off guard was the scene of the teachers having sex with each other.
