I had a hard enough time picking a party for EO2U with its various classes and now X has even more??? Also I'm gonna start on Heroic difficulty and hate every minute of it.

Oh hey an etrian odyssey game with both imperial and princess guess that makes it the best by default. This is pretty exciting though. I'm fine with subclassing personally, the one thing I'm worried about is class overlap, but they seemed to be -semi- careful about that this time. The only defensive class is the Protector, notably. It means it'll probably matter more how you build your party around the physical classes and what classes support that combo. I imagine Hero would overlap with landys a lot, but we'll see. I want to see a Warrior Might+link party rolling. That seems like it'll be fun.

I prefer the flavour of hexer over arcanist, honestly, but I get that they don't wanna double dip. Zodiac's easily my favourite of the elemental casters though, so the game has that going for it.

there's no way that the game won't end up being a balance clusterfuck but i think that probably just has to be embraced when you have this many interlocking parts

Subclassing is cool and fun. Though not necessarily unworkable. Of course when there are 19 classes, balance will probably go out the window. Though I would be surprised if balance was a concern with this many variables.

This is going to be unbalanced as gently caress but who cares as long as it's "you can make all the crazy rear end busted combinations" and not "there's one crazy rear end busted combination and a bunch of blah ones".

Yeah, on thinking about it, the lack of Hexer feels... bold, and perhaps the most glaring omission from the class list (if only because the young Hexer is like one of the most popular character designs for EO in Japan, full stop, behind the icon Protector and the Medic). That said, thinking about it, I wouldn't be surprised if there's "expanded portraits" or something, where some of the classes who didn't make the cut can still be portraited over other, very similar classes that are in (so you can make your "Protector" look like a Hoplite or a Fortress, or a Harbinger (or Arcanist?) look like a Hexer). I wouldn't be surprised if they do try to somehow fit everybody in, since they're taking pains to stuff as much in as possible as it stands. edit: That said x2, unless Hero is primarily a tank and/or Shogun's been rejiggered a bit to be mostly a tank, it feels weird as hell that there's only one dedicated tanking class but, like, between eight and eleven dedicated damage dealers, depending on how you count them. Now the question is, what will the Farmers (and the rest of the non-EO2U classes) get as their Force Boost and Force Break?

So as for what they DLC portraits are, they're guest artists drawing their own take on Etrian Odyssey's portraits.quote:DLC Portraits confirmed, artists include Shigatake (Dragon's Crown) drawing Farmer, Shigenori Soejima (Persona) drawing Re:Fantasy collab, Mota (first 7th Dragon) drawing Medic, Shirow Miwa (7th Dragon 2020/VFD) drawing Nightseeker, and Yuki Takahata (Etrian Odyssey Manga) drawing Gunner Cool- quote:Shirow Miwa (7th Dragon 2020/VFD) drawing Nightseeker Oh no. Ohhhh no. quote:Yuki Takahata (Etrian Odyssey Manga) drawing Gunner This amuses me greatly, though. (Gunner is the protagonist of the EO2 manga.)

Trying to guess at what locations are shown in the big map shown in the trailer. Looks like the EO3 1st stratum in the bottom left, maybe the ocean above it represents the EO3 2nd stratum since we saw it in the trailer. Most obvious one is center left next to the tree, 4th stratum of EO2. And center right is fairly clearly identifiable as the 4th stratum of EO1. Directly above it there is a pretty visible cave entrance which could be maybe EO4's 3rd stratum or EO5's 4th stratum, neither of those really seem like "classics" though. Anyone else have any guesses?

They played the Lost Shinjuku theme during the stream, although that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Definitely would count as a classic, though.

EOX looks fantastic and reminds me I need to play EO5. I just hope this is a celebration of the series so far, not a finale and that it makes the jump to switch, pc or mobile once the 3ds is dead.

I wonder if they're going to try to tie together a coherent story across the five EOs or just declare that it's a crossover, who gives a gently caress. I feel like EO5 is pretty heavily implied to be not on Earth, which would cause all kinds of difficulties, but who knows. It does kind of look like the cloud city was built on top of the Heavenly Keep, which is what gets me wondering.

I'm betting the new Hero class is a tank class of some sort because it makes zero sense for Protector to be the only defensive option in a game where there's more class options than ever before.

The Hero is a pretty blatant throwback to Dragon Quest, appearance and namewise, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's a kind of all-rounder class.

I am a little disappointed at the lack of Hound from 5 or even the lack of Masurao, which felt like a massively improved/reworked Shogun, though I am happy to see the return of the Arcanist from 4 thanks to currently playing it. Super curious at the Hero class and especially the how the game will be structured and flow though, because it looks like it is way more open in design than any other EO.

1 tank 1 buff class 1.5 healer classes 1 caster, maybe 1.5 if Link Order returns (at this point - why is INT even in the game? Necromancer, Poison Botanist and Punisher Shaman went into the right direction.) 2-3 ranged attackers probably 11 melee attackers How are you supposed to make different classes out of this? EO2U at least had 2 tanks and EOV had two Dragoon Masteries and Dodge Fencer for some variety. Even worse Highlander, possibly Pugilist and maybe Harbinger sacrifice life while Ronin, Shogun, Nightseeker and Farmer all have barely any defence and Imperial sacrifices defences for big damage - so going without a tank seems like a bad idea with a large portion of the roster. I hope some thought went into this class roster but it seriously looks like a style over substance mess similar to EOIII. They would need to do some serious rebalancing or every non-masichistic party will have a core of Protector + Medic or War Magus. Or the game is just super easy so you don't ever need a tank... At least the ailment/bind department looks ok with one full control class and multiple half control classes.

I assume there's only one tank, elemental caster, and basic healer because the core skills those roles have are essentially the same in each iteration, so it would be like having duplicates if there were more than one of any of those. I would have liked Hexers though.
