That's practically impossible. Trump would be revealing himself to have the limpest dick of any US president, ever, and no one would be more cognizant of that than him.

- The last one has to be topped, and bigly, since it obviously didn't work

- Trump's never had more of a reason to wag the dog

- There are Russians in the way, and relations with them are so bad right now that the Trump-Putin friendship is looking like Willy and Nicky (that's a WW1 reference :v: )

- Netanyahu, MBS, and Bolton have major war boners for Iran right now (and always)

Bolton's the war-hawk's war-hawk's war-hawk. Dude was nuttier than a guy with Mad Dog as a moniker and frankly could make the Caligula look loving Amish in comparison. Combined with Trump's hasty firings of anyone who gets in the way to his war and we've got all it takes for the end of days. I forgot who posted it in another thread, but we're lucky we haven't gone full war yet considering WWI started for less than what's been going on now.

Trump said "The generals will figure it out" so I guess there's a chance they'll figure it's a bad idea and tell him not to do it.

The thing is, if there's a serious bombing campaign and the Syrians shoot down a manned fighter/bomber with one of those Russian missiles the heartland is going to be baying for a full invasion.

It doesn't make much sense why the SAA would deploy chemical weapons now when East Ghouta was already almost wrapped up. On the other hand, the Syrians could also be trying to exploit the fact that it doesn't make sense to carry out a revenge attack and cast enough doubt to prevent an intervention. It has to be investigated.

It's only 2 dimensions. Along one axis you have "we really want to gas those loving al Qaeda" and on the other you have "we really don't want to get bombed by the US."

+ the syrian army has a bunch of chemical weapons

+ the syrian army doesn't even really exist anymore and is more a confederation of pro-regime militias with dubious command and control procedures (ironically, this is one reason why they've proven to be more adaptable and successful than your average brookings institution 'expert' predicted a few years ago)

+ the syrians might not particularly care what the rest of the world thinks

+ they do dumb poo poo from time to time

+ in all frankness the U.S. hasn't actually done much to stop them in the past

i'm no brown moses though and haven't looked done the picto-analysis of the particular bombs

I'm just saying that syrians bombing the rebels not caring about international response or cause they just love gassing children makes a lot more sense than that scenario.

The implausible would be the syrians going well we can safely gas because surely the united states or international community will be so confused on whether or not the action is a false flag or not that they'll not intervene. Like that's some spicy sicilian reasoning.

foreign policy doesn't really line up neatly along partisan lines. look at how fast the democrats and republicans flipped places on russia.

interestingly, the most outright pro-assad types in the west tend to be either communists or fascists. tucker carlson is probably the biggest major-media personality who really seems like an outright ethno-nationalist of the buchananite variety.

of course, this doesn't make the anti-war position wrong because fascists share it. on some of the nazi forums, they're talking about organizing call-ins to their reps to advocate no war in syria.

if there is anything approaching consistent foreign policy worldviews it's grounded in various "schools" like realist, non-interventionist, isolationist, or neoconservative/liberal-internationalist (i'm still not quite sure what the difference is between those).

umm. what else...

oh yeah well i think the chemical warfare denialists are trying to square a contradiction. first of all, they (a) don't believe the U.S. should go to war in syria, at least more than it already has, and they also (b) accept the view that using chemical weapons is verboten and would perhaps justify an intervention. so there's some cognitive dissonance there that resolves itself by concocting these false-flag stories.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUyrgEtzbvM

what if i say that assad used chemical weapons but i don't think the U.S. should intervene? 'my god! then you accept children being gassed!' no, i don't think a U.S. attack will make it better. the germans rolled out chemical weapons in 1915 and the fact of their use didn't justify U.S. intervention then -- and there were all sorts of atrocity stories used to justify that war, many of them true i'm sure. was the U.S. entry into World War I a good idea, in retrospect?

it's kind of ghastly thing to say which is why you won't see it on the op-ed pages. but that's me being honest with myself.
