Whoever wrote this is dumb as gently caress. It's not that Beijing ranked last, but that it ranked 100 on an apartment rental site that only displays the top 100 results. There's no total number of cities measured, so being in 100th place is meaningless. There's a world of difference between 100th out of 10,000 versus 100th out of 100.

Why do people always try to act like the ancient Greeks started a western versus orient pattern that corresponds to modern ones.
The ancient Greeks didn't just think the east were barbarians, they thought literally everyone around them in every single direction was a barbarian.

Because they did. You're right that they thought everyone who didn't speak Greek was a barbarian, but the wars with Persia set up a very explicit east vs west thing that did not exist prior to that. Greeks start to think of Europe as its own thing, different from the east. The Romans pick this up from them later and run with it and it's been going ever since. There are specific "easterner" stereotypes/tropes you can find in Greek and Roman writing that are still being used to this day. Oriental despotism? That was first used about Persian kings and it's still around.

There are modern differences of course but it's surprising how many of the original Greek tropes are still with us.

I think the "lesbian crush" thing happens in every culture where women are expected to be perfect and pure and wait for marriage before being allowed to express their sexuality (which then translates to pleasing their husband and pumping out babies). Getting close to the girls in their dorm is basically the only outlet they have. You're not going to get an orgy in a men's dorm in China because there's a massive industry geared towards giving men sexual outlets. Plus, Chinese society doesn't judge men for loving around before they get married so they don't really have any restrictions on dating.

Taiwan’s just waiting for the clock to run out; the court gave the legislature a deadline to pass a gay marriage law or it would become legal by default, and as far as I know the legislature is just taking a knee and letting the deadline do it instead of having a fight about what the law should say

This is a classic Taiwanese legislative move. They tried a similar stunt with legalizing prostitution and it ended up with the farce of a law they have now.

She's tried to get CG to abandon our friendship many times, and puts ideas in her head such as there is no other reason except prostitutes for why a single man goes to Thailand. Even though we have many photos of CG posing with my family members here, and she brought them all gifts both time she came out. The girl hates me and CG doesn't want to lose face to be like "Oops, I was hormonal, and everything I said was wrong and invented in my mind beforehand." The family, including her now-husband, knew she was a lesbian and she had no interest, but the family wouldn't accept that she could live her own life and not give them a grandchild so they could retire. They all forced her follow the cultural rules and get married before she turned 30. She was suicidal before the marriage, and I don't know her mental state now. Greeks were thinking of themselves as that distinct entity.

Today, Friday, is Songkran, or Thai "New Year." It has Hindu origins, but along the way they picked up the Chinese zodiac and it's like their version of Spring Festival Chinese New Year. In the 1970s some famous Thai guy was wearing Hawaiian shirts all the time, and people adopted his look for Songkran, so now everyone wears Hawaiian shirts here and it makes no sense. People celebrate by getting rip-roaring drunk, throwing water on each other, and then dying on their motorcycles. So far, from Wednesday and Thursday, 99 people are dead, and more than 1000 injured. I'm keeping up with this chart that Bangkok Post is running, because LOL.

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general/1445699/songkran-toll-99-dead-1-085-injured-on-roads

It has some copy protection so it won't let me post the article, but basically stay off the roads and don't get on or near a motorcycle or motorcycle taxi because everyone is driving drunk and motorcycles account for 80% of the accidents.

As a general rule, I stopped taking motorcycle taxis when less than half the time the guys have or offer a spare helmet for me to wear. I calculated that many times taking a taxi is slower, but the prices are only about a 20 baht difference to the places I go to make sure my head isn't pudding in the road.

It's Friday for me, which means working. Usually I take Saturday off and go out all day, but since the places I want to go are probably closed I will do some extra work and go out when everyone goes back to work. I'm the type that tends to avoid going out on all major public holidays anywhere I am, and this has made Thais and non-Thais utterly furious for some reason, like I am insulting the country beyond any other insult possible. On Tinder I have gotten nasty reactions from non-Thais who came all this way to throw water on strangers, as if I am ruining their weekend holiday by shrugging my shoulders and saying I have to work because my company is in US and we don't celebrate Songkran there.

Edit: I should add that my dad and Thai family all left the country and won't be back until next week, so I can't even celebrate the holiday in the usual sense with family get-togethers, etc.

In the US this is celebrated in a really tame way. There's a lack of water, drunkenness, and a lust for 2 wheel or pickup truck related death.

That is a question that I, as a Greek-American person, cannot determine the answer to.

Historically, under immigration law throughout North America (and Australia, IIRC), no. There was enough racial discrimination against Greeks during the early part of the 20th century that my (maternal) grandfather Don Drapered himself when he immigrated and told everyone he was French. The fact that anyone believed him shows you just how ignorant people are. On my maternal grandmother's side, it's even worse because they are Egyptian Greeks and therefore not white enough also by Greek standards. Interesting to note that two of my grandmother's sister married TURKS oh em gee! Their family was very liberal by Greek standards, though, so it wasn't that big of a deal.

I'm so white I glow on my own because I'm a halfsie. When I go to big reunions on my mother's side, people ask me if I work there or if I'm someone's girlfriend. My brother, on the other hand, cannot get through airport security without being harassed.

I dunno, no one's ever offered me a minority scholarship for being Greek.

I wouldn't put China anywhere NEAR worst place to be gay.
Of the expat mainlander lads that I plunged only one told me he was in actual danger for being gay.

Of course the vast majority of them were glad to be out of China so they could come out and "be their genuine selves" (although in Tokyo they wanted to work so it was right back into the closet lol) but at least they could dance around in a croptop at 3am in Shinjuku Nichome.

A few of them were out to friends in China and told me there was some understanding. Often a mix of "well you're still my friend" and "BUT HOW WILL YOU HELP BUILD CHINA'S GREAT FUTURE?" but of those who WERE out, none of them said it was a huge deal. Aside from family, I don't think i met any who were out to family.

Are they taught who was involved, why it started and how? Or is it just seen as a mostly European thing and ignored?

This is basically more or less the profile any place gives Them Bastards and Those Savages. The weak and effeminate thing applying to an enemy perceived as more elitist/domesticated than people, and you swap it out for "violent savage ape people" for when you perceive the other as less sophisticated than your people.

My biggest problem with all this though is how it's taking ancient slapfighting disses between civilizations and projecting the post-colonial lens on it, the modern meaning of Orientalism.
There's huge differences between the contexts of these things. And of course I'm always hella suspicious of anything talking about modern conceptions of Europe and Asia in any times before 1000 AD or so.

Betrayal in Paris: How the Treaty of Versailles Led to China’s Long Revolution by Paul French is a short and good read on the subject. Basically China contributed a large number of “laborers” to the war effort in the expectation that Germany’s concessions would be returned to them after the war only to get dicked over by the Europeans afterward.

I don’t think you can compare racism in modern China to thoughtcrime in the West, because most Chinese don’t have this ingrained idea that thinking a certain way about people who are not like you is unnatural or something to be suppressed. Which makes sense because they never had a civil rights movement, and what little minorities exist in China are so segregated from Han people.

In many ways your average Chinese person is prejudiced against people from other towns, or provinces, or even districts of the same city, and doesn’t really think of “black people” as being somehow different from “guangdong people” or “farmers” so the (usually) American idea that thinking or saying anything generalized or negative about a race - which comes from a localized history of slavery, oppression, and struggles for equal rights - simply doesn’t apply to your average mainlander.

For example if a 13 year old student tells me “I don’t like black people; they look really ugly” she’s not really saying it from a position of hatred as she’s never really seen black people outside of movies or television, and hasn’t been taught that these thoughts are shameful and never publicly voiced.

Nowadays you have people claiming that genital preference is a manifestation of transphobia (sucking your gilfriend’s dick isn’t gay etc) but all of these arguments happened because of western feminism and civil rights and those things are happening differently in China.

TL;DR I don’t think 21st century western concepts of racism really apply to modern China. It doesn’t seem to me that Chinese prejudices against other races or nationalities are any more or less strong than their prejudices against other groups of Han Chinese.
