it's such a dumb take because even if "political correctness" is what caused them to vote trump the fault is theirs. they're the ones who are wrong. as the great ben shapiro says - facts don't care about your feelings.

Kavros posted:Trump got elected because I wouldn't date conservative boys on okcupid and/or wouldn't be gracious to hear and nod my head when they describe to me their plan for God keeping bathrooms safe from the predation of transsexogenderals. Sort of. Trump got elected because in a capitalist society the only meaning to be found is in the stuff you own. So as people have watched their economic positions decline they start to feel that their lives are meaningless and without value. As a response to this they desperately seek new meaning elsewhere. For some this will take the form of community involvement or class struggle but for others it will take the form of religion, white nationalism, conspiracy theories or just a nebulous laundry list of grievances against perceived enemies (aka standard conservatism). Neoliberal Democrats have no substantive response to this and force alternatives like socialism and communism out of the debate, and so people like Trump win by default.

^^^ The biggest cause in this case wasn't people running to Trump, but rather people disengaging from the system who would otherwise lean towards the left (because poorer/disadvantaged people in general lean towards the left). And this is something that has been a gradual process spanning decades (lower voter participation, that is). While poorer people who switched to voting Trump still have an impact, they're a small portion of Trump voters overall, and that perspective ignores the fact that the vast majority of disadvantaged citizens either don't vote or vote Democratic (with a trend towards increasing numbers doing the former). So the absence of an actual left-wing due to the Democrats being bad is still the cause, but the most important effect is more people not voting than it is people running to white supremacists, though that also plays a role (since even a minority of people becoming white supremacist can have a big impact). edit: It's worth mentioning that voter suppression obviously also contributes to this decrease in left-leaning voters. Lightning Knight posted:The Mark Lilla/Third Way version of "identity politics and political correctness are the Real Reason Trump got elected" is the most asinine take on 2016. Yeah, it's somehow an even worse take than the "identity politics are at the cost of economic justice" one, in that it's being used to encourage the Democrats to move right as a whole both rhetorically and policy-wise. Trump didn't win because of white nationalism he won because he ran on an anti-establishment campaign against "america's already great" while income inequality continues to skyrocket. He was literally the lesser evil and has done more damage to the "establishment" than Hillary could have ever dreamed of. Plus we get to let the Democrats have another chance to nominate someone worth voting for sooner. Witnessing Trump make a mockery of the office and exposing Obama's years as worthless at best is a necessary growing pain for the Democratic base.

The dumbest specific "identity politics lost the election" take I can recall from D&D is someone managing to reverse causality and say Obama went too fast with the bathroom issue. Though immediately post-election D&D was a trashfire in general and I know people who got pushed out of bothering over being told that people like them (and not in an ideological sense) are why Trump won. You know how 'distraction' gets thrown around a lot these days by people who suddenly forgot politics existed until roughly a year ago? This is the type of thing that's intended to fly under the radar by virtue of being oh so overwhelmingly bipartisan and surely nobody would come out in argument for prostitution?! ded redd fucked around with this message at 19:17 on Apr 15, 2018 |

Like just look at the one 'dissenter' among the ranks of senate Democrats, they know the damage this does to free speech and internet freedom and that is exactly why having nearly the entire chamber voting to pass it helps provide cover for partisan trash.

Without any ambiguity this is legislation whose stated purpose is inevitably just going to wind up getting people killed in ways that were entirely preventable and the fact over 90 senators felt like this was a moral hill to die on is an embarrassing indictment of our government.
