Curious why don’t you all just use marvel unlimited instead of buying trades?

I'm too busy reading new comics to make subscribing for old comics worth it. And I'd never buy a full priced digital trade. e: Cause of sales, my Comixology backlog is enormous, so if I find any free time I'd chip into that. Teenage Fansub fucked around with this message at 07:49 on Apr 14, 2018 |

beergod posted:Curious why don’t you all just use marvel unlimited instead of buying trades? I'm terrible with subscription services. I'll leave them sit, occasionally think "oh, I should watch/read/listen to" something but never actually do it and then before I've gotten any value from it the time has expired. So it's better to just throw a few bucks at a volume of Star Wars or Squirrel Girl or whatever on sale here or there and just always have it there for when I do actually get the motivation to use it even if I end up spending a little more than subbing to MU. Totally a me problem.

Fair enough. The EC sale right now is good. I may have just purchased all of them and having slight buyers remorse.

Comixology looks a lot better on an ipad. I like downloading and having them on my ipad too. Plus I backup everything I can.

I paid for a year of Unlimited, and maybe only really read stuff on it for a few weeks here and there, so I dropped it. But I haven’t been buying cheap digital trades either, because my public library is an option for things like Squirrel Girl. They’ve got a lot of stuff but it is spotty in places. I probably should have tried to snap up the last Gwenpool trades for 99 cents.

Another Soup sale. https://www.comixology.com/Superman-80th-Anniversary-Sale/page/18176 Includes 'Superman' stuff this time, so definitely grab the Tomasi/Gleason Rebirth series. Apart from Death of Superman, everything on that Must Read part is definitely required reading. I'd also add 'Superman: American Alien', 'Lois and Clark' to read before the Rebirth series and 'The Black Ring' for a great Luthor starring run (Which is two trades. Page through 'More Superman' to see both.) There's also the John Byrne, Gil Kain and Garcia-Lopez collections, and 'Superman Aventures' where you can be shocked to learn that Mark Millar could write decent all-ages stories back in the day. So if I have Action from N52 up to issue 52 (Final Days of Superman) I would then jump over to Rebirth Superman to continue the story?

I'd read Lois and Clark and then 'Superman.' You could read the current Action Comics too, it's just not as good (IMO.) Do get the Superman Reborn trade where they cross over. If you haven't read through Greg Pak's AC yet, get Superman: Doomed, Savage Dawn and Final Days* trades since they give you the full crossovers, not just the AC issues, like the trades from the last sale. *I know you said Final Days, but just in case you only had the AC issues in that last trade. Are there any particular tablets people would recommend right now for reading comics on? I really need to replace my old lovely Nexus. I would probably exclusively use it for reading comics and ebooks. Preferably Android.

All Android tablets are kinda jank. The last one people loved was a Nexus 7. Get whatever has a nice screen and isn't too expensive if you're only reading comics on it. Here's Wirecutter's recommendations. https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-android-tablet/ I have a 7" Asus. Don't like they're skin, but running Nova mostly solves that problem (the settings menu is still annoying to use). It's good enough for comics.

I ended up grabbing a Samsung Galaxy Tab A (2017), the 8inch version. Other than the Samsung junk I had to go around disabling, it's been pretty decent as a comic reader, and I can slot in a SD Card for some memory space.

Android is pretty much dead as a tablet OS. There's still companies making them, but Google has made it clear they're not really designing the OS for tablets and that Chrome OS is the tablet OS of choice. Not to say Android tablets aren't still being made, but other than Samsung's higher-end options, they're going to be largely from second- or third-tier manufacturers and get limited support. At this point, you are better off saving a bit of money and getting either a Chromebook tablet or an iPad (the new one is a fantastic device for the money).

Cool, thanks guys. I know the tablet market is a bit weird and dying, I suppose if all I'm doing is reading on it then most any will do. e: I suppose I should have said "anything but Apple" rather than "preferably Android". I just don't want to have to deal with Apple's ecosystem again. I didn't realise that there were Chrome OS tablets. e2: Oh they were only announced a month ago. irlZaphod fucked around with this message at 14:22 on Apr 19, 2018 |

I got a Samsung S2 tablet a couple years ago. It was pricey but it's big, looks gorgeous, can do just about whatever I want on it and fast, and is surprisingly durable. I'm definitely going to get maybe two or three years out of it. Money well spent.

I've got a Kindle fire 8 inch. Most of the time it's pretty good outside of two page spreads. It was also pretty cheap too, 50-80 bucks and toss a memory card in it. Also has the awful app.

My iPad mini 2's the only Apple product I currently have and feel no real hassle using it. edit: Besides not reading full screen pages because of the size (I fit to width and scroll down), which is a fine compromise for the lower price. edit: Deadly Class https://www.comixology.com/Deadly-Class-Sale/page/18241 and Wicked + Divine https://www.comixology.com/Wicked-Divine-Sale/page/18191 sales can stack with the current 'Image18' 60% off code. Link to the things you mention, y'all. https://www.comixology.com/DC-Heroes-Sale/page/18238 80's Justice League International, Rebirth Detective Comics, New Super-Man and Super Sons are my faves there. Rebirth Batman is a must-read series now, but it was a little shaky in that first trade. Darkseid War and Justice League vs Suicide Squad were fun recent events. Also a Spider-Man sale going on: https://www.comixology.com/Spider-Man-Blockbuster-Sale/page/18198 I'd recommend the Ultimate Spider-Man collections, the Kraven's Last Hunt Epic Collection, Spider-Man: Blue, and either "Death of the Stacys" or "The Goblin's Last Stand" (or both, if you're okay with two issues overlapping at the Death of Gwen Stacy part and care about seeing Captain Stacy's death too, if not just get Goblin's Last Stand).

So I just subscribed to Marvel Unlimited thanks to the Infinity Wars deal and I was wondering if anyone could recommend good books to start with? I will probably start with the newest Squirrel Girl run. Does anyone recommend anything else? I prefer comics that are less serious and more comedy focused if that matters any but I am a completed newbie to Marvel outside of the movies and Cultural Osmosis.

She-Hulk #1-12 by Dan Slott (who also wrote a second series starting with #1 that lasted longer, but that first series was the best) She-Hulk by Charles Soule Hawkeye by Matt Fraction and David Aja (has some darker moments, but still generally light and entertaining) Superior Foes of Spider-Man by Nate Spencer and Steve Lieber Astonishing Ant-Man and Ant-Man by Nate Spencer Silver Surfer by Dan Slott and Mike Allred (I admit I've only read the first volume so far, but everyone loved it) FF by Matt Fraction and Mike Allred

Do the second to newest SG run. The comic got a new #1 along with everything else after an event, but it's a continuation. Daredevil 2012, Hawkeye 2012, FF 2012, Ms Marvel 2014, Silver Surfer 2014 and She Hulk 2014 are similarly on the light, fun, optimistic side. e: What he said while I was looking up dates.

I always recommend brand-new people start with Ultimate Spider-man. It takes place in an alternative universe and USM was the very first book in that universe, so you don't have to worry about 60 years of comics history that you don't know about. Also it's great. e: Oh and it's complete. zoux fucked around with this message at 18:58 on Apr 30, 2018 |

Endless Mike posted:I'm not sure Hawkeye is what I would call light or optimistic. It's still got more vibrancy and pop to it than 80% of comics, which is what I'm guessing this person is looking for. The most recent Hawkeye, starring a lady, is great too.

The Kyle Rayner collection, and long GL/GLC runs that start in '05 are solid (if you skip the Brightest Day event), but for singular stand-outs: New Frontier, GL/GA (if you can get into the idea of strange 70's socially conscious comics) and Mosaic (if you can overlook the author just getting busted on child pornography :/) edit: I'd say Pete Tomasi and/or Patrick Gleason's work on pre-New52 GLC is my favourite Lantern stuff ever, so it is worth dipping into that era, whatever you think of Geoff Johns. You might know them from the great Rebirth Superman comic. I think this was their first collaboration. Teenage Fansub fucked around with this message at 00:22 on May 3, 2018 |
