that must have been a decade ago or something, granpda. we mostly just feel pity now when we meet an american: gargantuan student debts, joke healthcare system, total social collapse, dysfunctional political system, retarded kleptocrats(ME!) in power. you don't hear a lot of positive things about the US on the news anymore.

95% of Europeans automatically assume that Americans are fat, brash and stupid.

If they are being polite to you its probably because they are either suspiciously side eyeing you waiting for you to say something retarded or are trying to work out if your one of the OK ones.

still remember when walmart tried to expand into germany ten years ago. it was a total disaster and they made it only a year or two before getting out again. germans were especially creeped out by the concept of a greeter and workers trying to pack groceries for them. now aldi& lidl are taking over the US. our shady, exploitative discount supermarkets are a socialist utopian working place by US standards. cashiers earn a living wage, they can sit during their shift and there are no wage slaves packing your groceries for below living wage. hail lidl

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand being an American overseas. The etiquette is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of American geography a lot of regional behavior will go right over a typical European’s head. There’s also the American pioneer spirit and independence, which is deftly woven into everything we do. Our personal philosophy draws heavily from the literature of Thomas Payne, John Locke and Thomas Hobbes, for instance. Americans understand this stuff.

As a consequence, Europeans who dislike Americans really *are* idiots. Of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the profundity of the simple statement “MAGA” spoken with a human being dog smile. :smug:

I think you're mistaking respect with the mix of horror and curiosity for the bizarre that people show. It's not often that you meet people that are the punchline of western civilization. An example of what could go wrong, if you let retards and religious fanatics run the show - combined with superior and undeserved firepower.

Denmark is pretty fine. Horrible tourists though.

He was constantly sweating and wheezing, sipping diet cokes and telling covertly racist jokes. Like he's in Warsaw and he says to us something like "Don't try to cheat. I know you Poles like to cheat, but there's one nation who beat it out of you. The Germans." And he did that human being dog smile while saying this, I swear.

Similarly Gamestop went in aggressively in Europe and bought up smaller chains in many countries. For about a year they tried their whole deal with asking if you want to preorder the next AAA game, get Game Informer or insure your purchase and customers hated it. They dropped it after a while.
All in all it didn't work out for them since they had stupidly high prices and ended up closing most of their stores. The end result is that here in Oslo for instance there are almost no places left to buy games anymore. You have to trek to music or electronic stores. While digital sales are obviously a big part of it they absolutely gutted the marked.

From ‘04 to ‘11 I was working overseas and backpacking during my vacations instead of going back to the States. It took a lot of effort to explain to people that not all Americans were blood thirsty idiots, and that some of them were actually pretty cool, when Bush jr was in the White House. While Obama was in office it was much easier.

I can’t even begin to imagine what it is like for travelers from the US since trump was elected.
