i hope you are all spending the next few days listening to things you love (great albums, the voices of loved ones, the ambient sounds of the places you hold dear, etc) because we are less than 5 days away from never spending a moment not having Janelle Monae's new album beamed directly into our ears and brains. Pynk and Make Me Feel are miraculous and if the entire album is that good it's gonna be the biggest deal in a long time.

I keep going through a thing where I listen to each new single and think it's not quite grabbing me as much as her other stuff. Then parts of the song end up taking residence in my head and playing over and over and I'm hooked. It's a good sign, indicating that she's doing something that's different but still just as good.

Janelle announced summer tour dates today, and tickets go on sale on Wednesday morning. I'll finally get to see her after my wife got too sick to attend in 2014. I couldn't even sell our tickets at face value to break even, so I ended up giving them away to a co-worker who ended up becoming a backstabbing saboteur.

i love the four credited features on the album: Grimes, Pharell, Zoë Kravitz, and fuckin' Brian Wilson. I've been wondering what the little vocal sample at the beginning of "Django Jane" was, since it sounded like Janelle but I didn't quite recognize it. When I heard it show up during "Screwed" I got hyped. And then that run-through of the 3 singles right after that was just perfect. I was apprehensive about her dropping the Archandroid thing because I absolutely love the track sequencing on those albums. But man, she still really excels at that even when there's no explicit concept to the album. (Speaking of "explicit", one of Prince's attributes that Janelle Monáe appears to have inherited is having every song tagged as "Explicit" even when they're not. Although most of them are.)

Dirty Computer is fantastic. I feel like it might drop off in the second half a bit, but I'm sure I'll get into it. I enjoyed all the singles but they hit 10x harder on the record, especially Django Jane.

I remember seeing the Many Moons video posted somewhere on these forums in like 2010 and I've been obsessed with her ever since.  I am a Dirty Computer.

It's one of my favourite albums this year, not sure if it's my favourite. I didn't love many songs on the back half, but maybe I'll warm up to them on a relisten? Seriously though, as strange as Brian Wilson is for a feature he's not wasted. His feature is so Brian Wilson. The song is pure brilliance. It's a mix of Beach Boys with spacy future pop. Looooooove it.

I dunno, I Got The Juice is goofy and probably the weakest track on the album, but I don't really hate it, and I think the back half is pretty uniformly great after that. Don't Judge Me is incredible and Americans is a great send-off. The back halves of her albums tend to be more slowburn growers and a little less hooky, but I mean, I'd put Don't Judge Me on par with Sally Ride or Say You'll Go as just a big ol moody setpiece. Totally agree about the Williams cameo, it's so great and weird and perfect. I can't get it out of my head. That and Screwed really stuck with me after my first few listens. After a few listens, the only real dud for me is the Pharrell track. The rest is good. Americans isn't really my thing, sounds like it could have come from a musical, and I hate musicals. It's not bad though, I hope it grows on me. The other songs in the second half are great. Usually the Pharrell track wouldn't bother me, but the run of tracks before it is so strong that it always sticks out a bit for me.

if i were christina, who now no longer has a job as a judge on The Voice, and is probably riding very hard on this album being a success, i would be loving lit up that the guy producing my big comeback single is burning literally every bridge within 500 miles of him while wearing a shirt that says "Hillary Sucks, But Not Like Monica"

Sigrid, a Norwegian artist who's put out great bops has released a really catchy nice tune that's been my ear worm this week alongside Tove Stryke's new stuff. The whole album is excellent, I love the sound she's landed on a lot. It totally. Special shout to high horse for it's genre blending without sounding out of place. That said, I do still miss some of the edge and humour that was all over STDP. It felt so genuine and personal in a way that's really uncommon (or that doesn't cross my personal music intake). I can't begrudge her evolution as an artist but it's not quite as fun to listen to.
