Holy poo poo, which one of you lucky fuckers got that Sleep album!? I thought I had a chance getting out of work at noon but left empty-handed.

Yes. Most of the current members however have been working with the band for the last 20, 30 years anyway. The only new guy who hasn't worked with them before is the current drummer.

Here’s a semi-spoiler list. I say semi-spoiler because they’re credited on the albums by name.

Nolan Cook - Guitar
Eric Drew Feldman - keyboards/computers
Carla Fabrizzio - tuned percussion/drumming/the female vocals that aren’t Molly Harvey (not on tour)
Josh Freese - Drums (on tour)

My store had the Sleep album and this post convinced me to give them a shot.

Record Store Day trip report:

Probably the biggest haul for me since... 2015, maybe? RSD's been kind of lame in recent years, I was surprised at how many things I wanted this go-round.

Back row: Run the Jewels box set, J Dilla - Ruff Draft alternate mix, Robert Glasper & Kaytranada - The Artscience Remixes
Middle row: Miles Davis - Rubberband EP, David Axelrod - Songs of Innocence (:hellyeah:), GOAT - Double Date OST
Bottom - Led Zeppelin single thing

Basically got everything on my list. I kind of wanted the George Martin album, but I might just wait and see if enough copies stick around the local shops for it to be discounted.

A couple of other recent finds:

I got the Berlioz because the album cover is creepy af (and Symphonie Fantastique is quite nice for classical). The Cookie Monster EP is mostly a reissue of disco mixes, but the real star of the show is a remixed Pinball song as a b-side. Kid Dracula is, as I've often previously mentioned, a result of me being a Ship to Shore fanboy.

My record store had a few copies of the Bowie live record left by the time it got to me in line. Also grabbed the Marnie Stern album, Unreleased 70s porn music comp, and the Kevin Morby and Waxahatchee Songs: Ohia 7”.

It turns out that the Bowie live album might not have been the big "it" item people expected it to be because the store where I got mine still had three out or the four copies they told me they were getting and I showed up a few hours after they opened. I think partly people are scared off by the price, but it's a triple LP so it pretty much costs what three LPs cost. I also grabbed the Brian Eno single.

I went meaning to just get the Bowie live album. I ended up getting that, the silly flaming lips single, RATM live at the DNC, the Arcade Fire EP, both Twin Peaks 2017 double albums, and my local store threw in a bunch of poo poo including a Cut Copy 7" single. 10/10 would RSD again!

edit: I was probably overly cautious for Bowie lining up at 2 AM as they had a lot(probably more than any other record), but I'm sure that as of noon today they definitely sold out. Anyway the album is fantastic. If you're on the fence just get it.

Is there a significant difference between the mono and stereo versions of Piper at the Gates of Dawn like there is with a bunch of other albums of the era? I've only ever heard it in stereo.

Yeah, there's a bunch of differences. Pretty much, most psychedelic music from 1966-68 is going to have a bunch of differences given how produced those songs were.

Some of the bigger ones that stand out:

1. Interstellar Overdrive has an organ in mono. There's no organ in stereo!
2. Vocals tend to sound very different. Part of it is that in Stereo, they sometimes do the ADT split between the stereo field, which creates a very different sound than if it was centered. Bike is a good example. In stereo, it sounds like a strong echo, in mono, it's more like a double-tracked vocal.

I'm sure there's some other. It's also a much better mix overall.

I decided to check out the local Dimple Records just to see if they had any leftovers from RSD. Was able to get a couple of the less-sought after records that I wanted so it ended up being a good day! Picked up the 9th Wonder LP, Johnny Guitar Watson LP, and the Prodigy picture-disc Record. Another local record store wasn't participating in RSD, but decided to do a 20% off sale so I went and splurged a bit.

Madvillainy - Curls & All Caps Singles w/Instrumentals
2001: A Space Odyssey Soundtrack
Paul Horn - Inside the Great Pyramid
Area 615 - Trip in the Country
The Circle Jerks - Wonderful
Erick Sermon - React Single/Instrumental
Joe Cocker - Joe Cocker!
Guy Warren Sounds - Themes for African Drums

Already grabbed a few samples from some of these records for some songs I have been working on. I didn't grab pictures of this purchase but after a year, my record collection is looking pretty solid. I still have such a long way to go though, haha. In total, I have about 280 records.

Little nostalgia bomb...

Birtha has balls. I guess that was their slogan. Anyway pretty awesome 70's hard rock that seems to have slipped through the cracks. My wife did not like Jandek... At all.

Soul of a Bell and Badu are VMP pressings. They do a drat good job on the pressings and the overall package but the price is just a tad too high for me.

Goodie Mob is a pretty awesome package from VMP but those stencils are almost as garbage as the art prints. Might be the last time I sign up with them unless they go back to pressing more hard to find stuff. like this. This month's hip hop selection was Doggystyle which I had just picked up for ten bux. The classics selection is The Lightmen Plus One, which I want, but Now and Again will be releasing it in a couple months.

Also. gently caress this poo poo....

The one and only time I saw a copy of the mono version was about ten years ago and the guy wanted 80 bucks. I can't imagine what people must be asking for it now. I'm not sure but I think Relics has the mono version of Interstellar Overdrive. It's been a while since I listened to that album so I'm going to get that out later and see.

Stopped by one local on a whim late Saturday afternoon and nabbed one of the last remaining copies of the Eno/Shields 12". It's good. Also, I picked up some non RSD re-releases, Coltrane's Giant Steps and Mingus' Ah Um. The Mingus was a sealed 180g re-release because I am a filthy peasant, and now I'm having a moral dilemma. Due to reasons, I got around to the Mingus just last night and much to my surprise but the A label was apparently botched at the factory and decent portion of it bleeds over the lead-out and onto the last track of Side A. As expected, the record becomes fairly unplayable at the end of Side A. There's no way I would have known this at the store and it's a pretty common rule to not rip open the vacuum sealed stuff before purchasing. I feel like I should go get another one, but it's been days now and I didn't keep my receipt. :(

You should post a picture because that sounds like one messed up label and I'm curious what it looks like. My understanding is that label is put on before the record is pressed, so did the label end up having grooves in it?

Nail Rat

You maniacs! You blew it up! God damn you! God damn you all to hell!!

They're available on black vinyl, so the only real thing about this release that stands out is the fact they're on PD and lack sleeves. Which to me seems kind of pointless, because it's like, you're getting a portion of the artwork and nothing to look at while you're listening.

Not to mention with it being a gatefold clear plastic sleeve, you take the discs out from the center and it's a real pain in the rear end.

I'll get a picture disc if there's no other option, but going out of my way to pay more for a picture disc that's available on standard vinyl - yeah I won't do that. But I was sleep deprived and wanted to feel like waiting in line for 7 hours had been worth it and made a bad decision.

Labels are applied during the pressing of the biscuit, so if a label is offset / loaded off-center of the spindle for whatever reason it's going to get pressed into the grooves.

Here's a shot of the biscuit with labels on either side about to get pressed between two stampers:

Double box them and air mail them to yourself. It's expensive but makes traveling a lot easier. I've done it with 13x13in boxes of ~45 LPs each and it was fine.
