Basically if they went (hypothetically) 50% off they'd sell more than twice as much, which would still allow them to cover their overhead.

But FW is a weird little hobby industry that doesn't have the capability to manufacture more so they inflated MSRP as a speed governor to limit the amount of models they need to produce.

E: I'm not claiming this is true, it's just the thinking. However, FW practices are a holdover from before GW believed in market research, so maybe there's something to it.

You've pretty much got it here. There would come a point of diminishing returns where the market is just not big enough for FW miniatures to sustain the number needed to pay for it at a much lower price point. You then add in the fact that GW proper like FW prices being that high, because it means their standard tac squad looks a million times better and FW becomes effectively a non competing product to them.

I'm seriously considering going with Vlka Fenryka. I painted a couple of test models using the recommended colors, and after putting a lot of work into them once I put them down on the tabletop they looked like unpainted bare grey plastic. I don't really want to paint them 40K blue-grey. Any suggestions on how to make that grey look better? Maybe go a bit darker?

Post some pictures. Could be anything from altering the grey you use, to not making good use of colors on the models to make the grey pop, or lacking shading, or yada yada.

I used Mechanicus Standard Grey as a primer, airbrushed a darker grey (Vallejo German Grey) from below, then Administratum Grey airbrushed zenithal-style from above, followed by an edge highlight.

There's your problem. Grey isn't very conducive to zenithal highlighting. It needs pretty crass definitions between transitions, and rather extreme highlighting.

The easiest way to do so might be to add some battle damage to them. Here's an example of a guy that did space sharks:

You could use pigments or washes to modulate the color in some way. Like a warm dusty grey or a oily grey-brown. Grey is pretty boring by itself, yeah.

Seconding this. I tested this week with a brush as well, as I needed one model primed and couldn�t be assed to haul out the airbrush. Went on great. I also don�t know how you could gently caress up the application unless you put on so much it was literally dripping off the model, it�s been extremely forgiving for me.

Is this the end of 30k as an official thing? Presumably y'all can carry on indefinitely with recast stuff, but it's a shame for a ton of time to have been invested in this only for them to pull out of it near the end (and with like 4 legions left untouched never mind all the roster gaps).
