Conversely, her good friend is a teacher about 2 hours north of us in a big city, and hasn't gotten a raise in 10 years. Even in the same state, education is varies tremendously in how stuff like that is handled. We get grants out the rear end for technology in the classroom, but sadly never budgeted for additional staff to support all the technology. So our IT department is stretched very thin. STOP WITH ALL THE HARDWARE MONIES AND JUST BUY US JAMF GODDAMNIT.

Not counting any chickens, but had a good call today on a potential lead. And they didn't balk at the number I gave them "to even consider changing". And it's also in my old stomping grounds (I'm gonna get so fat) which is half my current commute.

Second day in a row one of our program sites is giving a server error for us at the HD. I send out an email about it and get told I should be using the http instead of the https version of the website. Even though we were a. never told this and b. we have another program site which does the same thing for other states which does use https in the address. Sysadmin response: quote:We should always place http, and if we need them to use https, then we can redirect http to https automatically without having to update links or shortcuts. Well, ok!

It gets used like once a month maybe, do we really need 20 people to have it? Yes, what if we have to do it suddenly! ~two months later, an audit~ <IT Boss> Why the gently caress do 22 people have this right? Remove them all except for UserB and UserC, all requests for this now have to go through SiteManager. ~Repeat about once a quarter for a different folder access, specific program rights, or user accounts.~

So our VP of IT comes over and wants us to call at least 70+ users across multiple centers because there are 73 PCs pending Windows Updates. I check with my Sysadmin buddy and they already have a task set up to reboot their servers when they have updates at 2-5 AM, and it would be easy to modify that for the user PCs. I tried to argue this that there is a more efficient way to do this remotely, but no, we have to look "proactive" so (I infer) he can look good for upper management. So far, only one of us is even trying to do it and he may possibly be working from the wrong list in SCCM. I already , so I give no fucks and am not doing it.

Myrridinos posted:A good patch management system is your friend. Yes, although I think ours is currently broken. Among other things, it keeps rolling out .net updates to PCs in a certain OU which was specifically set up not to receive .net updates. This is important because if .net gets updated above a certain version, then the main program the users use on these PCs doesn't work. I think they're disabling the patch management system or .net updates altogether while it gets fixed.

So a text came in from last job. 'Hey, hope the new job is going well. Could you call *new support person* and let them know how you fixed the windows 10 no USB devices working issue? Thanks" You mean the issue that I thoroughly documented how to fix in an email thread, in my tickets about the issue and in the internal documentation? Sure I can call them. I'll make sure to send you the bill for my time.

Academic department that we don't support needs help repeatedly. We tell them that putting their computers on the university domain would be a lot more efficient and we could manage permissions per user. They refuse to do that because they want everyone logging on using the same local user account and password, and admins log on with the local admin password, which you could guess within 3-5 tries since it's so close to the local user password. Their iMacs are running an end-of-lifed OS because they're afraid to change anything and cause problems with software. Our sysadmin to our boss "I'm not supporting those computers until they pull their heads out of their asses. You can figure out the nice way to say that and no, I'm not wasting my time attending that meeting they invited me to." Our boss considers that a perfectly acceptable thing to say to him and will play diplomat with the incompetent department.

Ghostlight posted:Ticket Details: David is on a conference call and his phone keeps making a noise at regular internals please help. If you can fix offline now while he is on the call would be great. Man, I just had to troubleshoot something related to this. The Polycom Trio 8800 consoles we use in our conference rooms have been ANNOYINGLY OBNOXIOUSLY BEEPY ever since a firmware update pushed them past version 5.5.2. This release introduced a hot new feature called "alert tone on mute status" that was also somehow alert toning every other goddamn action people would take. Share their screen on Skype? Beepbeep! Mute themselves? Beepbeep! Join the call? Beepbeep! Leave the call? Beepbeep! Request control of a presentation? Beepbeep! Now, I personally had trouble replicating this issue, because in all my solo testing I never once turned on my webcam. Start sharing your webcam over Skype? BRACE FOR BEEPS. No webcam? No obnoxious over-beeping. I called their support line. They had no idea what the gently caress I was talking about...and yet, firmware version 5.5.4 fixes this issue. Good job, Polycom.
