Its pretty obvious that the US can't hold a candle to the mighty IJN forces so they tried to sneak an entire transport task force by claiming they were bringing supplies to Japanese troops to continue the fight, long live the emperor and all that jazz. The only reason the ruse failed was because, when asked, Grey Hunter couldn't believe he still had that many transports left floating.

To be fair the last time they used a transport fleet to use up all of Grey's ammo supplies it actually worked out pretty fantastically.

Ok maybe all of this is a distraction and the carriers are taking the long way around through Suez and they'll show up in the East China Sea as part of a surprise attack? I don't know. Also, I imagine the headlines back in the US read something like "Unemployment Rate Declining Yet Again!"

Also water does help mitigate the problem of UXO. I wouldn't go scuba diving in Pearl Harbor, but that's because it's an active port. Truk has a ton of shipwrecks and is popular with divers. Truk nothing, Bikini Atoll is a safe diving spot for those with the technical skills to do those wrecks. With that said, you need to bring your own supplies - while the water is fine, the atoll itself is still not (though it is getting better). Parts of France and Belgium are still toxic because they were literally dumping thousands of tons of chemical weapons into sections of the terrain. There's no real way to clean it up bar literally carting all that soil away, as some of those chemicals are really enduring.

Well, this is a good start. And she's not finished yet! I think my escorts are asleep. These guys flee. It's not going that well today. See. The Helens get a kill. Typhoon Jill. We put more hurt on the fleeing freighters. We trade planes over Rabaul. Resistance collapses at Truk. The Allies are back at Wake. Burning ships and all. They are landing a base force.... This is going to go well for them.... Well, we murdered a lot of soldiers today. Things went poorly for my shipping however.

We burn more shipping off Wake. This ship was carrying fuel and troops. And instant barbecue. The I-19 is not done yet! My Helens die in droves. I thought I said go south? We find the light cruiser, but between fighters and flak, it's a bloodbath. This could have been a lot worse! Boom. I start up on another Chinese force. Bag me that light cruiser someone! You win today, Allies.

I love how not even an overwhelming numbers advantage can get you to break even. Honestly seems like your better off just sending single zeros into the 100+ flight swarms and hoping that it causes enough confusion that multiple allied planes collide mid-air before taking him out.

26 April 1944 German torpedo boat T-29 sunk off Brittany by HMCS Haida. 27 April 1944 IJN light cruiser Yubari sunk off Palau by USS Bluegill. More of a large destroyer than a light cruiser in many ways, our timeline's Yubari is remembered as the victim of the out-of-fuel raider flotilla incident at the beginning of the month.

OpenlyEvilJello posted:26 April 1944 For size reference on Yubari, it's only fractionally larger than an Akizuki-class destroyer, and only a bit over half what the Agano-class measures. On a side note, Japan REALLY loves reusing Akizuki. Aside from the WW2 class, there have been two modern JSDF destroyer classes of the same name (one in the late '50s, one rather modern one that's currently in service). And in both cases all members of both classes have reused names from within the WW2 class. No other JSDF ship class has a reused lead ship, so far as I can tell, and members of the classes tend to be mixes of names from different WW2 classes.

Have they reused any of the three lucky destroyers?

# ? Apr 28, 2018 01:08 |

Yukikaze was reused once, as the second (of two) member of the JMSDF's first indigenous post-war destroyer class (Harukaze class). As far as I'm aware, Shigure has never been reused. Not certain which third ship you're referring to.

I don't remember if the Allies took Rabaul during the war. I think they just surrounded it with airbases on nearby islands and bombed the dogshit out of it until the Japanese abandoned it. In any event, they aren't having much luck with whatever they're trying now.

Basically the Allies bombed it continuously after the Battle of Guadalcanal until the end of the war. Hilariously, the defences of Rabaul had been so completely suppressed that the bombing runs were used as live-fire training Allied pilots. The garrison was larger than that of Okinawa and withered on the vine to the point that there were more than a few reports of cannibalism by the time the war had ended.

When I said I wanted 4 ship kills, the captain of the I-15 laid down his life in that aim. Go big or go home! Yeah, the silent service heard me! The Helens go on anther suicide mission... Bring me my tithe! I put some dive bombers on Truk – also notice the hit report from the scouts.... So, did I make it? Curses! At leas we know the Essex is going to be in dry dock for a while! That buys me a little bit more safety...
