Some galactic defender you are, Space Cadet.
A recent comment on the latest Sunk Cost Galaxy YT Page:

quote:

Well as backer (only 35€ but still a backer) or a sucker as you might say.. You opened my eyes a little. You are right in two things to begin with. First, im backing the game for the dream, for the promise of that living universe. I alrady had wet dreams about having a powerfull org and being one of the best pilots in the galaxy and im gonna tell you something. If I was a bilionaire and had some spare millions I will surely donate them to the proyect itself. Its aspiring to be something enormous and diferent, somewhere to begin a second life, a life in space, in the future... That is one of the reasons is so apealing for me, and I belive is for others too.

Second of, you just showed me that CIG aint that dream company that is here to make my previous dream come true. And yes, the figure of Chris Roberts was really a factor here for me to even consider pledging. He is a really nice guy (at least from an outsider point of view) and he was passionate with the games and proyects he created/he was involved in. But now I see that Cig is just there to make money... Though there s something here that is keeping me faithfull. I dont know if Cig wants to make money to finaly release the game, and they will do this at a slow pace to gather as much money as they can from backers (I bet the odds are than a baker spends way more that a couple of 60€ final-game-buyers). Or the other option is that they are just using the game to win as many euros/dollars as possible and then vanish, leaving us with an incomplete game not close to anything that they stated.

Anyway I really hope its the firsy option and still, Im going to tell you what is my point lf view on this that havent chanhed much after watching the video. Backers are the only way to fund this proyect, considering the large scale it has. For me and many others is the perfect way to be able to access this game just paying for the starter pack. I really respect backers, specially those who spent some good money here and there, cause, if not everything is wrong with Cig, they are the ones making the gsme posible.

Yes, your vid thought me that Cig may have been taking a big avantage from them, playing with his dreams. Maybe Cig should cut this a little... I cant deny it. But at the end of the day, is there any other option (regarding funding) to build a game like this? In my humble opinion, sadly there is not.

If this is a 'bubble' that will explode when money stops coming in... I dont want to be there to see it. I dont want it at all. I want Star Citizen to be a thing in the future.

As far as im concerned, the little money I spent here was fair. Just cause of little stupid things that made me not miss that money. I still remember one of the first times in 3.0, when I had the oportunity to see a sunrise in Yela. It was really magnificent. I felt so small in the universe. I really thought about me as a human, about the real size of our solar system alone and how beautiful it was.

I can remember the comunity, I got lost several times, people came ti rescue or to pick me up when i most needed it. I can remember all the friends I made just by saying in the chat if somebody wanted to join discord. So many adventures from scratch, that just took place because of the people that plays the game (I do love that the comunity is mature, maybe it averages 28-30 years)

And I also run an org. Is so good to plan things with friends, scorting, recruiting people, doing bussiness with other orgs, making alliances, preparing for tournaments...

It took me a while to write this on the phone so, a) eng is not my main language, I might as well apologise for any mistake or bad use of words and b) Im willing to hear what you have to say, feel free to reply or ask me for a way of talking outside yt (you too creator of the video, its my first time on your channel tho) I would just ask you to be polite with me even if you are just going to hate on me.

Thanks for reading. I have more things to say but I feel like I already said too much. Cheers guys!

Not posting to make fun, the earnestness is sweet and his longing for the ideal space game experience is pretty relatable. There are aspects still easy to believe in, in spite of the odious pathologies and deceptions of Chris, Sandi and a handful of others.

One can see here those other things already buoy his spirits. It’s a mix of the cinematic experiences in the Alpha (a very Batgirl attitude) and the inclusiveness of those encountered in the community. That second part is often easy to miss because our own focus is on the Zealots, DS-obsessives, the shills, the compulsive spenders, the dissent police, the toxic nuts, and other extrenists that aren’t hard to find. But there still are a lot of backers who are just earnest nerds who simply trust a lot more in Chris than anywhere here can, many of them normal nice dudes that would be more than easy to get along with.

It seems to me a positive that he was receptive to maybe taking a more skeptical view and solicitous of interactions without making condemnations. It’s not seen very often and by the end of his long post, I sort of felt a little touched by the earnestness of it. I wish the reality conformed to his idealism.

In a related note, Derek’s presence in the comments with little more than a compliment on the video has inspired some earnest replies of their own.

On one hand it's good for him that he's having fun and is hopeful.
On the other hand though and sadly (in my opinion) there are always people like that. You can have an obvious turd of an half finished MMORPG (no not Star Citizen, that's not even a game) and there will be people telling you that they love the community and found a second home and made new friends and the sunsets are amazing, and how the game helped them overcome their sadness/ depression/ health issues.

At least he's not hooked on spending more, although again his mentality seems to be aligned with the "more money to make dreams happen" part of Crobbear's last year letter rather than the "we have the money to make the game" part which he seems to skip. Then again that was the whole point of that particular piece of scummy marketing.

The OICW was a hilarious concept. 18 pounds to combine a stubby assault rifle with an underpowered, ultra high tech grenade launcher using all of the advanced technology that the mid-90s could put in there. Naturally that didn't stop video game designers from going crazy and embedding it in every "near-future" game they could, along with other failures like the Pancor Jackhammer and the Walther WA2000. It did result in the military developing the XM25, which was the dedicated grenade launcher portion of the OICW. As of 2017 that program was also canned. There's a long, ripe history of video game companies and gun manufacturers closely working together due to the mutual benefits. Video game developers get free access to high fidelity models of authentic weapons that resonate directly with the consumer, and gun manufacturers get free advertising for their latest and greatest platforms.

At least we haven't gotten the fishgun in too many games. Only big one I can really remember was BC2's XM8/XM8C. Barely used either since 9A91/Uzi were where it's at yo.
