It’s been well over a decade for me, and I clearly remember the ramp of which you speak. I was so pissed because it’s very much not obvious and it took me 15 mins or so to finally stumble across it.

A common theme in the HL2 developers' commentaries is "the playtesters didn't notice x, so we did y and z to draw their attention." And creating a visual language from repeated uses of y and z is a difficult balancing act. If it's done well, you don't even notice it's there. And if it's not, it can be difficult to articulate what the problem is. And testers will not necessarily help here; They're veterans, so they can "read" the game much better than the average player.

You don't have to 8e a good person to 8e a hero.
The best thing about the HL2 developer commentaries is finding out that d0g's head shake after Alyx asks him if he "did the math" in Episode 1 was originally a glitch that the play-testers found so funny it was hard-coded in.

Yes. I forget how you turn them on, but it puts talk bubbles around the map that you can engage with to hear commentary on that area or the game in general.

I don't think it was a glitch, just a really convenient timing with Dog's idle animation making it look like he was shaking his head. What was a glitch that got put into the game was:

* The scene in Episode 2 where you can throw a grenade into a dumpster to kill a fast zombie and it throws it back out.

* The helicopter spewing bombs everywhere during its boss fight in the original game (they had accidentally set the machine gun to fire bombs instead of bullets and really liked the idea as an attack).

* The gunships targeting incoming missiles instead of the player.

I actually got stuck a couple of times playing HL1 for the first time too. Had to check some old as hell purely text based guide I found on Google to discover I was missing an open window and a tiny ledge just wide enough to walk on. So yeah, HL1 can be a bit cryptic sometimes and it's not always immediately obvious where you're meant to go (hello, most of On a Rail).

That said you've got no excuse with Half-Life 2, there's maybe one or two spots where the only path isn't incredibly obviously highlighted. Getting stuck for more than a minute while you get your bearings in that game is pretty indefensible :colbert:

I'm guessing it's the puzzle with the Air Boat where you have to move all the crap off that one ramp that's hinged, then back up and get enough speed to jump off the ramp before it collapses too far.

I recall being stuck there a while, because it's obvious you should clear off the ramp, but it flattening out every time you step on it makes you think there's gotta be some other way, or something around you can use to prevent it from collapsing.

I'm playing through HL2 just now, played it a bit at the time but didn't finish it.

I got stuck here for ages (1:20:52 if the timestamp doesn't work for you)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91uWeqArrok&t=4852s

because i assumed you had to use the gravity gun to build stairs up to the uncovered part of the ladder, rather than just shooting the lock, and that turned out to be harder than you might think.

The lack of a map and objective markers is pretty jarring compared to modern shooters, given how open some of the areas are.

Ha, I remember being stuck there as well. I think I was preoccupied by thinking of clever physics things to do, because that's what you're shown how to do all the time, instead of just shooting a lock, which never loving works.

I got stuck like that a few times in Borderlands 2 that basically made me quit the game for a week or so and come back to it later, having maps with multiple levels and no real good way to figure out which is which broke my brain for some reason, and it takes like 10 minutes to walk the whole way around some god drat mountain or something when you realize you're on the wrong level for the one guy that you need to kill.

I kinda hope you're misremembering doing it that way because what you're actually supposed to do is put crap in the obviously connected lift thing and then release the brake holding it up

I can see how it would be extraordinarily hard to do without adding the counterweight to keep the ramp up though!

IIRC some Valve games require you to have completed the game before you can turn on the commentary.

It’s not hard to work around that, but if the option doesn’t show up or is greyed out, that’s probably why.

I'm not misremembering, and I recall putting counterweight stuff in the basket. But even with it counterweighted, it will still fall if you try to drive over it too slowly with the air boat.

I guess what I mean is: the counterweight IS the solution, but it doesn't really click into place, since the up position of the ramp isn't fixed (ie. it still moves when you put weight on it), so I can recall trying a few different things until finally I just went "well what if I go as fast as possible?" which is what ultimately worked.

It would have made more sense if you fill the counterweight, pull the lever and the ramp locks or clicks or gives some indication that it will stay in that position.

Another from the 'my phone can do that now' files:

A mixer for adding music and narration to your home movies! I found one secondhand in the 90s, and it felt flash as hell. What a mess the setup was though. Wires everywhere - everything needed a power supply, and everything had to be plugged into this box with RCA and 3.5mm cables, including the music source, mic and monitoring headphones there were so many wires. Then the box had to be plugged into a VCR. Then the camcorder, VCR and CD player all had to be started manually at the exact right moment before the mixing could begin, which was almost impossible to do perfectly.

Over the last weekend I fired up my old Sega MegaDrive. Consisted of the MD2 (Genesis 2) MegaCD 2 and 32X. Now THAT was a bit of a pain to hook up. 3 huge wallwort power supplies (and of of course 1 has a different voltage), a passthrough cable from Mega Drive to 32X then an out from that to the TV.

Everything worked fine except when I turned the Mega Drive off it was still getting phantom power from the 32X due to the 3rd party passthrough cable sending 5V back. Had to trim a pin out of the connector to fix it.

Too Many Cables is not an obsolete tech problem. This is what you need to set up a PlayStation VR headset, not including the camera it uses.

Granted, VR in general is still in its relative infancy, it’s yet to be pared down and streamlined. And it’s running on a 5-year old console that probably wasn’t designed with VR in mind.

I've still got a Master System floating about somewhere. The odd thing I remember about it is that, to connect it to the TV, it had a switchbox that plugged into the RF antenna port of the TV to switch between signals from the antenna and the Master System. Maybe I'm just too young to remember, but it's the only console I know with something like that

The NES and SNES had their almost iconic grey RF box, and I know my old Atari 2600 had one with a manual switch slider. All those old RF hookups were neat, I remember having an old TV with the screw terminals that had to warm up longer to play something on channel 4 than it did channel 3. Good times. :3:

The downside of that design was that you also had to plug your power into the RF box, leading to some serious restraints in organizing stuff around the TV

Even more obsolete, I had one of those RF conerter dongles to attach coax to the screw-terminal antenna leads on an ancient (late '70s) TV. I think it's still in my parents' junk drawer, even though they've only had one unused CRT in the house for the last ten years or so.

I'm at my parents' house, and found the thing I was talking about :

Two of them, in fact, along with a pair of things to go the other way:

I guess somebody put them all together to keep them from getting lost, it'd be rather pointless/not work to use them like that.

Edit: the TV those were used on was built into a cabinet, and I could change the channel/volume randomly by jangling a bit of steel chain I had as a toy when I was little (small children back in the mid-'80s were easily amused and we were poor). Because it used an ultrasonic remote, and apparently the chain made the same frequencies.

Something in this line, though I remember ours being more yellow plastic in nature:

Also that's why older people, at least in the US south, call the TV remote a "clicker" -- that thing had spring-loaded hammers that whacked a tuning fork when you pressed a button, and made an audible click along with generating the ultrasonic tones that made the TV do a thing.
