Searching for Friends is the best and captures the essence of "things are really lovely right now but we have hope" that you get after snagging the falcon.

Underworld / Land of Dwarves is probably my second favorite. I wasn't impressed with any of the ps1 era overworld songs.

Thankee kindly.
Over the Hill is a good overworld song that you don't realize you miss until Disc 4 where the doom and Mist sets in.

I think VII takes the prize for best overworld song for me personally, and this is coming from someone who generally prefers VIII/IX/X's soundtrack over it.

Also games like Setsuna look like uninspired drivel. This is the first time I’ve seen anyone talk about that game since its release. The fact people are supposed to settle for mediocre nostalgia bait says a lot about the genres health.

It helps that they're pretty dang good.

I'll join the chorus of people saying FFIX is my favorite, though I do like the FFVII theme... in orchestration. Unfortunately what we got in the game has that early PSX era problem where the music kinda sounds like it's being honked by a digital goose.

You can make stuff inspired by old jRPGs and still innovate on that formula. Look at Bravely Default and Undertale, among others.

Semi-unrelated, but I'd love a JRPG that took Xenosaga's combat menu system mixed with Legend of Dragon's addition system so that every attack is basically a fighting game combo system. For those who don't remember, Xenosaga had you make a "combo" by selecting attacks in order. I found that a really fun system that had a lot of potential. Legend of Dragoon had an addition system where, when you attacked, you had to make quick time events to add additional attacks depending on your equipped addition, with the change of the enemy trying to counterattack and requiring you to respond.

Mixing those two together could really be fun and help keep menu clicking engaging and allow for a lot of interesting attack combos.

As it is with every JRPG, the answer is once again FF7's overworld. They don't call it the greatest JRPG ever made because it's forgettable. All the tracks in FF7 are the best in their category.

Right, if we're branching out to other Square titles then this is the correct answer. Chrono Cross has probably the best soundtrack of the PSX generation.

The Valkyrie Profile and Project x Zone series do this. The character(s) have multiple attacks that you need to string together and your timing on how you combo them affects different mechanics depending on what you did. PxZ also shows why an RPG fighting game hasn't taken off yet, since the sheer number of times you need to do combos can be exhausting for some.

That was not why at all. The problem with Project X Zone and Namco vs. Capcom is the hosed up enemy phase because turns take forever AND there's literally 50+ enemies.

Indivisible is a game that takes Valkyrie Profile combat to the next level

I did Daryl’s Tomb yesterday and the part where it goes from Epitaph to Searching For Friends is always the best.

I think VII’s world map theme might be the best but for pure emotion and capturing the imagination of the game world I don’t think anything tops Dark World.

I am too. I'm also glad the main character doesn't have giant gazongas, doesn't have child bearing thighs, and isn't wearing nothing more than two bandaids and a slice of ham. I'm exaggerating for comic effect, of course, but one of the big things holding back Skullgirls, for me, was the oversexualization of the main cast. Anything that makes me embarrassed to play it in the living room is a bit of a deal breaker. Which stinks as its a very good game. Had the same problem with Dragon's Crown.

Anyhoo, Indivisible looks like its going to be a great game.

Terra's theme is my favorite OW theme.

Chronocross one or two misses. The Zelbess music comes to mind, and I'm not really a fan of the rock concert music.

80% of the sound track is really good though, and the rest is some of the best video game music I've ever heard.

Came here to post this, best FF overworld theme even if it isn't actually from a FF

How can one composer be this based

I guess the only downside is that the loop is only 60 seconds, so second place goes to the FF7 disc one theme which is a solid three minutes or so before it repeats. Disc two theme is awful even if it kind of thematically fits.

Ffuu managed to get all the way to Trial stage 100 in FFXII but since my party is exhausted from previous battles I had no choice but to try using Zeromus. Two summons and Gabranth still isnt dead so he slaughtered all of my remaining dudes.

I wonder if I can pull off 3 summons before he kills my summoner

This latest run of FFVI has me thinking I should place it a lot higher in my personal favorite FF list. Phoenix Cave remains one of the most underrated dungeons in series history. World of Ruin just always ticks all of my boxes. Tragic storytelling with relatable, human situations? Check. An oppressive villain? Check. Tons of quests? Non linearity and total freedom? A gently caress ton of items to equip and use? Tons of side quests? Character recruiting? Insane dungeons with great gimmicks (fanatics tower, Owzer’s house which I just did, Phoenix Cave, Old Castle). Bosses, secret bosses, and even more bosses? For me, it’s got it all. World of Ruin is too good. I could only imagine if SE made an entire FF based off its structure.
