From the Beer emails, recounted in Kotaku UK’s translation of the Level Magazine story about the fued between Smart and Roberts.

The series of emails exchanged between Kevin and various Cloud Imperium staff members make for astonishing reading, to the extent that he has been accused of fabricating them by other Star Citizen forum members. Having seen the emails in question, though — Kevin was happy to forward them to me — I see no reason to believe that they aren’t real. It should also be noted that Cloud Imperium Games has not denied their existence, even on direct questioning. “Who doesn’t ’silence doubters’?” writes Sandi Gardiner, marketing chief. “I’m a qualified teacher, I can’t have rowdy teenagers in the class constantly disrupting the class, nothing gets done nor moves forward.” The emails lay into Kevin, into the press (including allegations of corruption), into RSI’s forum members and the game’s backers (calling them “butthurt” and “special snowflakes”), alongside an impassioned defence of the Star Citizen project and of Chris Roberts himself. And at the end of it all, finally, Kevin had a reason for his ban:

Technically, the poop-stool is the best thing connected to Star Citizen to come out this year.
-does not exist just in JPEG form

-Probably didn't take 8 years to develop

On another note, I think we'll start seeing the crazies stand out a lot more as more and more of the "average joe " backers either leave or refund. You can see something similar with I dunno.... let's go with Sonic the Hedgehog. Once his games started getting worse and worse, most of the community died off and the only people left invested were the die-hard fans. The ones who were sane and well-integrated people went off and did their own thing, with the most notable being Sonic-Mania . The others are the ones who clog up Deviant Art with creepy (technically underage) fetish porn.

The "Sonic Mania" star citizen fans will probably be the ones who'll bring us : "Star Citizen : A Starfield total conversion mod".
The others.... well you can see them right now.

Also, in the interest of fair representation, I'm sure not all these people are crazies. Montoya is a youtube shill trying desperately to drum up controversy for his channel. So is that GamerMax dude . Bored is a straight up CIG shill who will never read off-script even to save his life.

Montoya is a standout offender because he’s got this White Knight Alpha Dude Schtick he’s stuck so blindly to that he’s put himself repeatedly on the wrong side of a debate. Heaven help him if Crytek doesn’t get Cry-Rekt by Judge Gee and that notion to dismiss gets denied. I don’t see how that could happen when stuff like this is out in the open. (Oopsie!) But he does at least have his Test Squadron Best Squadron gang, and surely some are still primed and ready for Chris to save PC Gaming.

Bored is an unapologetic optimist but even he had vented on occasion, often about what he calls CIG’s “stupid marketing poo poo”. The Foundry UK Dev team he’s friendly with knows CIG’s marketing leadership is a farce and source of so much grief. I suspect Bored has heard his share of frustrations and since he’s a valuable resource for CIG, he feels free to take some shots. Also to Bored’s credit, he is critical of CIG censorship and overmoderation and feels like all ideas and opinions deserve a hearing, not just the theorycrafters and ship porn addicts.

As for GamerMax, well yeah. I think he went Heretic out of frustration and has been trying to plead and vent his way back to good standing with a shrinking audience that is spoiled for choice when it comes to Star Citizen Personalities to watch. Low signal, a lot of noise and not much to say makes for a hard sell.

Mitauchi proposed cutting the baby in half by telling backers “you can Melt until September then it’s gone”. Even though he knows it would cause its own huge uproar and that would suck massively. I think he also called introduction of the Melting option the biggest mistake CIG ever made because now backers consider it their right.

Now, in light of all the various meltdowns underway, against the backdrop of all the various proposed angles to cut the Solomonic Baby born of CIG Marketing Wisdom in half, now picture what happens when the “Ship Earning for credits” feature that was once touted as a 3.0 feature and is still believed by guys like Twerk to be right around the corner actually disappears from view for the rest of the year.

They can’t do it, and the reasons they can’t arent technical, they’re financial. And obviously so. There is no way, no how that CIG isn’t already neck deep in development on some new transgressive monetization pathway forward. They have to be.

We are going to get something at CitizenCon, some glorious debut of THE THING. You can feel it shaking the ground as it lumbers slowly forward. What will it be, this THING Chris has cooked up to ensure something resembling continuity for yet another year?

What transgression, what betrayal is he already cooking up? Because everyone senses it coming. What has he already tasked Hannes and the Gang to introduce with glorious cinematics in this years equivalent of this perfumed fart in the backers faces from the very same show that gave us:

  • “Sorry no Squadron Slice, we’re going to sit this out because Infinite Warfare is right around the corner and Chris is terrified of real life comparisons after spending years conjuring imaginary ones up...”
  • Stealth takedowns of Sand Nomad mannequins that sports the most lovingly detailed desertwear you have ever seen on a NPC without AI...
  • SANDWORM!!!! On Lier III! A system we are years from delivering because we’ll be working on finishing Stanton for the next couple and Leir is way the hell out there in the fringes of past Banu space...
  • An hour long demo of Spectrum...
  • The Road To CitizenCon — a celebration of how hard we worked and still didn’t deliver really anything you wanted because someone once said something about “rushed games being forever bad” and “the game will come out when the game comes out” and “I definitely backed the right game!”

I’m not asking this rhetorically. I really am curious what the thread thinks THE THING will be. Squadron itself is kind of a thing but the Crytek case is a big sword hanging over that potential revenue source and core tech like combat AI (especially FPS) seems very, very far away...

The pragmatic option involves more and bigger paid subscriptions. If they can get whales on a fixed monthly credit card hit that bigger than just the usual subs, or force everyone to a low cost “justifiable” subscription, then they’ll have a bigger, easier source of monthly recurring not dependent on an Asset pipeline that Chris clogs like the world’s biggest bowel movement, one that lets things pass by soooooo very slowly because “art.” So subscriptions are far more compelling economically. So would they target whales with the higher cost monthlies or a bigger base with a marginal one?

Real Estate structures already have a precedent with Land Claims. So they could start selling various tiers of housing once the Protection Racket Mechanic actually functions as advertised. But here too, subscription could theoretically be an option. “Rental property” could let you enjoy an Admiral’s View of the sunset for a modest ($x) a month. “Why spend the full ($Y00.00) when you could rent it for that and not even have maintenance costs!”

Until they have someTHING that isn’t ships pulling in meaningful monthly revenues, they can’t deliver the overdue “earn credits and buy your ships” feature that they absolutely must deliver. The form it will assume is unknowable but that it is surely coming is inevitable.

I think THE THING will be ramps that don't instakill, $100 fresh cash only.

But on a serious note, subscription hikes would only cause anger and certainly not something to unveil at a CitCon. I'm thinking they will have more bullshots of a planet with living cities and then they will swing over an ocean, at which time the next concept will reveal itself, a submarine.

Some parka clad explorers out in their snow treaded notMako will unintentionally collect/release an alien specimen that shape shifts and wipes them out.
